My First Backcountry Camping Trip!

Three Dumb Guys in the Woods with too Much Beer

Page 6: Camping & Design

Mt. Washington State ForestSouth Egremont, MA

We carefully planned our route from the parking lot to the camping area 1.5 whole miles away!

Page 7: Camping & Design

We expected to see lush forests…

Page 8: Camping & Design

…and ford raging rivers…

Page 9: Camping & Design

…then witness gorgeous sunsets…

Page 10: Camping & Design

…and experience all of the wildlife that mother nature has to offer!

Page 11: Camping & Design

But first, we’d end up here – 20 miles north of NYC, without brakes.

Page 12: Camping & Design

And we’d meet this strange man…

Page 13: Camping & Design

“You know the thing about walking barefoot? It’s not about what you step on, it’s what steps

on you.”

…who had this to say:

Page 14: Camping & Design

So, we waited for the car to get fixed while we played cards.

Page 15: Camping & Design

Two hours and $300 later, we were back on the road!

Page 16: Camping & Design

Once we arrived at the parking lot, we put on our gear and hit the open trail…

Page 17: Camping & Design

Mt. Washington State ForestSouth Egremont, MA

…and headed towards our destination

Page 18: Camping & Design

Mt. Washington State ForestSouth Egremont, MA

But we wouldn’t get there.

Page 19: Camping & Design

Mt. Washington State ForestSouth Egremont, MA

And instead, ended up here.

Page 20: Camping & Design

This lead to much frustration…

Page 21: Camping & Design

So, what went wrong?(besides being unable to properly read a map?)

Page 22: Camping & Design

Our packs were too small and we were over encumbered.

Page 23: Camping & Design

This experience lead to us to explore light-weight equipment

alternatives. There are many options.

(but first we’d need bigger packs)

Compressed material from body weight provides little insulation. Bottom of bag does not contain insulation in order to decrease weight. Instead it contains a slot for a sleeping pad (1/2 pound).
