Campbell Class June, 2015 Grade 5/6 News Students, once again, had a chance to show their talent during drama performances. Three groups worked on three different contemporary plays: ~The Mystery Spot ~Confection Perfection ~Nail the Tale The groups performed them for the class. We have a lot of drama talent in our room this year! We switched from drama to dance and the students have been working on a cultural dance project. The project involved a written assignment about the culture, dance, costumes, and meaning of the dance. The presentations involved showing the class pictures of the authentic costumes, performing a one minute piece of the dance in their group, and then showing the actual dance performed by people of that culture. Groups of five students worked together on dances from four different cultures: ~Hawaiian Hula Dance ~Philippine Dance ~Mexican Dance ~Southern India Dance Drama and Dance Students really enjoyed their mini-unit on algebra. We are just beginning a unit about perimeter, area, and volume. This builds on the ideas learned about equations and letter variables representing numbers. Students will be working on remembering that perimeter is measured in linear units, area is measured in squared units, and volume in measured in cubed units. The class will be using many manipulatives during this unit including modeling clay to help visualize some three-dimensional shapes. Math Special points of interest: Grade 6 Ropes Course Tuesday, June 16 All Grade 5s and 6s to ‘On the Green’ on Friday, June 19 Year End assembly Thursday, June 25 Literacy Students finished their Media Literacy for the year with performing a radio commercial. They studied radio as a form of media, learning that the persuasive techniques used in commercials were geared to using only sound. As the class listened to the radio performances, they turned their chairs around so that they could only hear the sound. Students did a great job using music, humour, repetition, and more adapted persuasive techniques. The last novel we are reading together is about a brave and commanding 10 year old girl who manages to lead children in their struggle to survive after a virus devastates the world that they knew.
