WE RALLIED. WE MARCHED. WE DEMANDED CHANGE.

We knew that when kind people are given the opportunity to speak up for animals they

will take it and you proved us right, New Zealand! Five years after SAFE uncovered the

cruelty of factory pig farming the pork industry was exposed yet again in July after two

new investigations by SAFE and Farmwatch revealed abhorrent conditions and cruel

    treatment of factory-farmed pigs.

Media coverage was immense with features on the biggest current affairs show,

Sunday, two weeks in a row, the Breakfast show, all major radio stations and major

newspapers. And even better, there was a huge groundswell of support from the public!

    NATIONAL ACTION

Thousands of people all over the country united for a massive National Day of Action

Against Factory Farming, appalled by the two exposs that showed not only the horrors

of intensive farming, but also neglect and physical abuse of animals. It was the biggest

rally for factory farming that New Zealand has ever seen and your voices on behalf of

animals were heard right across the country in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin,

Hamilton, Auckland and many other centres.

The exposs and the day of action sent a powerful message to the government and

the pork industry. Caring Kiwis want a total ban on factory farming, and will not accept

the ongoing failures of the Government to help the animals. Nor will they put up with an

industry that continually puts profit before animal welfare.

The huge outcry also demonstrated how strongly our community opposes animal

cruelty, and that when animals need a voice, SAFE supporters will be there.

But the fight is not over yet. We are absolutely determined that we will achieve a ban on

factory farming. With your passion and commitment, we know that animals will one day

be free from the horrific suffering of factory farming.

PigCare means pigs can be kept in sow

    stalls, farrowing crates and fattening

pens all cruel factory farming practices.

The bogus PigCare scheme was exposed.

40,000 people signed a petition againstfarrowing crates.

A new poll showed that 82.3% of people

agreed that animals need to be able to

    express their natural behaviours.

The Minister for Primary industries was

forced to put the industry on notice, and is

now considering a ban on farrowing crates.

Have you seen this label?Do not be fooled!

    As awareness of the unacceptable

    treatment of animals grows,

so too does the demand forSAFE to continue to be a strong

    voice for animals.

While learning about these issues may

sometimes be difficult for some of you,

your feedback tells us that on the whole,

you support what we are doing and want to

see positive changes for animals too. This year, with the help of some very

generous supporters, we have created two

new tools to help keep you informed and to

give you more ways to help animals directly.

    SAFEs new look

SAFE now has a brand new logo and a new website! But you do not need to worry we are not changinganything about our commitment to animals.

If anything we are upping the ante to help keepNew Zealands animals truly SAFE. The website is betterdesigned, is easier to use, and most importantly, has newtools, such as e-cards and petitions, to help us campaignfor animals. It also functions on smartphones and tablets,so you can access it anytime, anywhere.

    Mega Farm Hell

SAFE has joined the fight against a proposedmega factory farm.

A battery egg producer, Craddock Farms, hasapplied to build one of New Zealands largest eggfactory farms south of Auckland. The huge operationwould keep 310,000 hens in cruel colony cages, producing 10% of New Zealands egg supply.

Find out how you can get involved at safe.org.nz

    Imagine a hen conned in a crowded wire cage;

sore feet from standing on a wire oor; feathers

missing due to being pecked by her cage mates

and rubbing against the sides of the cage.

I feel angry for every single hen who will be made

to suffer in a colony cage. Join me in my anger,

and then put that anger into action.

    The CruelColony Cage Con

    - Hans Kriek

Battery cages will be obsolete in 2022 but to replace

them the Government is phasing in another cruel system

colony cages. Colony cages offer only slightly more space

than battery cages but still force hens to spend their

    entire lives confined.

The New Zealand egg industry is set to spend over

150 million on installing them, yet these cages are not

wanted by the New Zealand public. A recent poll showed

that 72% of Kiwis agree that colony cages do not provide

enough space and are not an acceptable alternative to

current battery cages. SAFE has written to ask Primary

Industries Minister Nathan Guy, to implement an immediate

moratorium on the establishment of any new farms that

use colony cage systems for layer hens.

We must stop colony cages before they become entrenched.

SAFE will make this issue one of its top priorities and we willbe calling on you to help our new campaign to free all

New Zealands caged hens. Watch this space!

We update often,so make it your homepage and always have

    up-to-the-minuteinformation about

    animals.
