Did you know that there are an

estimated 3,000,000 (3 million)

shipwrecks in the ocean?!

“Hello everyone, I hope you enjoy our underwater box. I am very excited about this week because I love all things H2O! From swimming to surfing,

going to the beach and visiting aquariums — the water is the place I like to be. One time in Costa Rica, I surfed right overtop of a stingray! What’s

the coolest thing you’ve seen in the water? See you next week!”

— Laura Condren, Community Recreation Leader

• Construction paper

• Googly eyes

• Popsicle stick

• Gems

• Scissors

• Glue

• Pencil

• Pen or pencil

1. Take any piece of construction paper and trace your hand onto the centre of the paper.

2. Next, take your pair of scissors and cut out your traced hand, setting the extra scraps of paper aside for later.

3. Glue a googly eye onto the handprint and add the gems to create fish scales.

4. Cut a small “C” shape out of your leftover construction paper and glue it on as a mouth.

5. Glue the provided Popsicle stick onto the back of your fish and set aside for 5 minutes to allow time to dry.

• Create different patterns on your fish. Example:

stripes or polka dots (for striped or dotted salmons

who live in Ontario lakes)

• Trace two hands and create an octopus with 10

tentacles (10 fingers)

• Pylons or other place markers

1. First create a playing field that is rectangular, using pylons or anything else from home to create boundaries.

2. Select one person to be the octopus and place them in the middle of the rectangle.

3. Have all other players line up beside one another at one end of the rectangle, facing the octopus.

4. When the octopus shouts “Octopus,” all of the players try to run from one side of the playing field to the other.

5. The octopus is allowed to run anywhere in the playing field.

6. If a player is tagged by the octopus, their feet become frozen to the floor and their arms stick straight out: They are seaweed.

7. For the following rounds of play, the game gets harder as the players who have been turned to seaweed reach out and try to tag other players who are running by.

8. Remember that seaweed players CAN NOT move their feet in order to tag a passing players.

9. The last player remaining at the end of the game gets to be the octopus at the beginning of the next game.

For COVID-19 purposes, you can play using pool

noodles to extend your reach. Or instead of tagging

someone, you can introduce some soft balls. Once a

ball is thrown and you are hit, you are now either

seaweed, or a shark!

Change everyone's mode of transportation. Example:

everyone has to walk like a crab. If you have lots of

energy, change the rules so that players who get

tagged now become sharks too! This makes it much

harder to avoid getting tagged as the game goes on.

• 1/8 cup of dish soap

• 1/8 cup of cornstarch

• 1/4 tbsp. of baking soda

• 1/4 tbsp. of glycerin

• Bowl

• Mixing spoon

• 6 cups of water (distilled preferred)

1. Using a large bowl, dissolve cornstarch in water (be sure to stir really well).

2. Stir in the rest of the ingredients slowly; try not to make any bubbles.

3. Allow your mixture to sit for at least an hour before use. Stir occasionally if you notice the cornstarch clumping at the bottom.

Have you ever wondered why a bubble is round? It’s

because of surface tension! Even if your bubble has a

funky shape it will turn into a sphere in the air. It shrinks

to its smallest possible size because of the air in it.

Does your bubble go round?

• 2 plastic straws

• Yarn

• Scissors

1. Using your straw, measure a piece of yarn that is eight times longer than the straw.

2. Next, thread your straws onto the cut piece of yarn and tie both ends of the yarn together.

3. Holding each straw apart, you have now created your bubble wand.

4. Use your new bubble wand and the bubble solution that you have created to make long snakelike bubbles.

Your Camp Counselors gave giant bubbles a try for

themselves! Go watch the YouTube Video on the Tiny

YouTube Channel to see if you were able to beat them

for the biggest bubble!

With a friend, sibling or parent, see who can make the longest bubble! Start at the same spot and run with your bubble wand.

Not all of the cornstarch will dissolve into the water, but

do not worry; it will not affect the quality of your

bubbles.

• Yoga cards

• Open space with lots of room

• Mat or towel (optional)

1. Find a space inside or outside with lots of room. Optional: place mat down on the ground.

2. Read the instructions on the back of your underwater yoga cards.

3. Try out the different poses, and remember to concentrate on nice even breaths!

Younger campers may need demonstrations of the

yoga poses. Be sure to check out our YouTube video or

play follow the leader with an adult!

After reading out the prepared yoga cards, try to create

your own yoga poses! Once you've created them, draw

them on a card and name them! What underwater

animals did you come up with?

Yoga is over 5,000 years old. Male yoga practitioners

are known as ‘yogis’ and females are known as

‘yoginis’.

• Animal shaped diffusing paper

• Water

• Spray bottle, paper towel, or cup

• Markers

1. Take out provided animal shaped diffusion paper and place on top of a scrap piece of paper

2. Using makers, create a cool design

3. Spray, drip, or splash water onto the paper and watch the colours flow into one another

4. Set it out to dry

Diffusion happens in liquids and gases because their

particles move randomly from place to place. Diffusion

is an important process for living things; it is how

substances move in and out of cells.

• Food colouring

• Dixie cups

• Popsicle sticks

• Water

1. Fill the Dixie cups with water

2. Take the food colouring and add a drop or two of the colour of your choice into each cup.

3. Mix the water and food colouring together with a popsi-cle stick and then leave the popsicle stick submerged in the cup.

4. Place the Dixie cups in the freezer and allow time to freeze. These will be used for a craft made on Thursday!

The colour wheel was invented by Isaac Newton in

1665. He used a prism to turn white light into a rainbow

and arranged the colours in a wheel.

For an expert level craft, you can mix different food

colourings together to get unique colours!

Sharks don’t have bones! They have cartilaginous

skeletons. This is what the tip of your nose and ears

are made of! Even though they don’t have bones, their

bodies are still able to fossilize.

Add additional stages of the evolution. Be creative!

• Minimum of 4 players

Players must wander around the room in stage #1 (pretending to be a shell). When they encounter another player, they battle each other in Rock, Paper, Scissors. Winners evolve to the next stage and the losers stay as they are. Standard rock, paper, scissor rules:

• Rock beats scissors

• Scissors beats paper

• Paper beats rock

The stages are:

1. Shell: hold both hands on top of your head to look like a shell.

2. Fish: make fish lips and flap your fins.

3. Jellyfish: act like a jellyfish and use your arms like tentacles .

4. Shark: act like a shark and place your hands on your head like a fin.

5. Human: wave and act like a human (say I’m a human), swim around.

The first player to move all the way up to human wins the game.

• Craft Bowls

• Streamers

• Googly Eyes

• Paint

• Glue

• Scissors

• Paint Brushes

• Rice, dried beans or loose change

1. Paint the outside of 2 paper bowls using the colour of your choice. Set aside to dry.

2. Next cut the streamers into different lengths for tentacles. Set aside.

3. Once the bowl is dry you can add googly eyes on top of one of the bowls. You may also wish to add different designs and a smile with a marker.

4. Glue the previously cut streamers to the bottom edge on one of your bowls to create the jellyfish tentacles.

5. Put rice or tiny objects in one of the bowls and glue the other empty bowl on top. Let glue dry.

6. Once Glue is dry then hold the jellyfish and shake it like a maraca!

Jellyfish aren’t really a type of fish! Unlike fish who are

vertebras, jellyfish are invertebrates meaning they have

no bones. They have also been on earth for millions of

years, long before dinosaurs!

• Craft Bowls

• Streamers, yarn, and plastic string

• Bells

• Googly Eyes

• Paint

• Glue

• Scissors

• Paint Brushes

1. Paint the outside of the craft bowl the colour of your choice. Set aside to dry.

2. Cut the streamers, yarn, and plastic string into different lengths for tentacles. Set aside.

3. Once the bowl is dry, you can add googly eyes on top. You may also wish to add different designs and a smile with a marker.

4. Glue the previously cut streamers to the bottom edge of your bowl to create the jellyfish tentacles.

5. Add bells to the end of some of your tentacles for added sound effects!

The largest aquarium in the world is located in Atlanta,

Georgia in the United States. It holds 24 million liters of

water and houses more then 100,000 sea creature!

Synchronized swimmers never actually touch the

bottom of the pool during their routine; it’s not allowed!

They have to use their team mates and lots of strength

to do their tricks. They are not even allowed to wear

goggles during their routine. Instead they have to open

their eyes underwater.

• Camp in a Box YouTube Video: Synchronized Swimming

• Open space to dance

Watch video on the Tiny YouTube Channel and follow along with our synchronized swimming routine.

• Ziploc Bag

• Hair gel

• Food colouring

• Plastic fish

1. First, fill a Ziploc bag with all of the hair gel from your box.

2. Add a couple drops of your favorite color of food colour-ing to the bag.

3. Add your plastic sea creatures to the bag. You can name them too!

4. Close your bag and mix it up.

5. For added fun, tape your aquarium to the window and squish it with your fingers. It’s a great sensory activity!

See if you can memorize the routine and perform it!

Even better, create your own with your family!

1. Starting at the beginning of the alphabet, think of an

animal that lives in the water whose name begins with

the letter “A”.

2. Once an “A” animal has been said, continue naming

animals for each new letter of the alphabet until the

letter “Z” is reached.

3. You can play this game alone, or by taking turns with

others at each new letter.

Try listing all the animals previously said before adding

a new letter. This makes it harder as it becomes a

memory game. The list gets longer and longer the

further down the alphabet you go.

Example: if you are at the letter D, you would recite all

the animals said previously; Alge, Ballooga Whale,

Crab, before adding in the new animal — Dolphin.

For those who would like an even greater challenge,

you can follow this sign language alphabet diagram!

When you are going through the alphabet, try to hold

up the letter in sign language as well!

If you cannot think of an animal that lives in the water,

can choose to name any land animal instead.

Les scientifiques et techniciens français ont inventé

les montgolfières, cinemas, motoneiges, saxophones,

l’Etch A Sketch et Velcro. Vraiment cool!

Join your camp counsellors for a weekly French lesson. What better way to start than with the alphabet! Be sure to follow by watching the YouTube video on the Tiny Recreation YouTube channel.

The phonics underneath the letters will help you sound out the letters; the words help you say the letters in English!

Français English

Bonjour Hello

Merci Thank you

Oui Yes

Non No

Chien Dog

Chat Cat

If you feel ready, you can attempt to say some of the

words in the chart.

For those who are French experts you can try to say

the French alphabet backwards or all in one breath!

After practicing a few times, you should share with

friends and family how you learned the French

alphabet!

• Ice cube paints (we made these on Tuesday)

• Blank paper

1. Take your premade ice cube paints out of the freezer

2. Allow time to warm up to allow for easy removal from the cup

3. Holding the attached popsicle stick, place the coloured ice onto the blank paper and create your beautiful masterpiece!

4. When finished, dispose of the ice cubes into the sink to allow them to fully melt

• 2 cups of baking soda

• 1 cup citric acid

• 1 cup Epsom salt

• Food colouring

• A cup

• Essential Oils (Optional)

1. Mix all dry ingredients in the cup (baking soda, citric acid, epsom salt)

2. Add a couple of drops of food colouring and essential oils (optional)

3. Let it harden overnight

4. Add to the bath and watch the magic happen!

Have you ever wondered why bath bombs were created? They were invented as an alternative to bubble baths for people with sensitive skin.

There are approximately 16 different types of ice. The type of ice in your freezer is Ice #4. The different types of ice are classified by their density. Density is how you measure how solid something is.

Scientists have even found ice in outer space, which may serve as evidence that there is life on other planets. This is because life as we know it requires water to live, and ice is just frozen water!

Watch the read-a-long on the Tiny Recreation YouTube channel to listen to your counselors read the story!

Fish have a special organ called the lateral line and it

works like a radar. This is what helps them navigate

through dark and murky water!

To make the game more challenging, create a

scavenger hunt course where you have to grab the

markers while holding your breath and see how many

you can grab.

• Skipping rope

• Markers, or other object to use as a ‘diving wand’

1. First place a skipping rope on the ground. Extend completely, using it as a starting line

2. Spread markers/’diving wands’ in front of skipping rope ranging from 5-10 feet apart

3. Starting with your feet on the skipping rope, “dive” into the “pool” while holding your breath

4. Collect as many ‘diving wands’ as you can before you need to take another breath of air.

5. Once you can’t hold your breath anymore, return to the skipping rope. Count how many wands you have collected!

Tiny Recreation Fidgety Fish

• Act out the story while listening to the red-a-long.

• Choose your favourite story to read aloud and

perform it for your parents, friends or siblings.

Sound travels five times faster underwater than in air,

which makes it almost impossible to establish where

sound is coming from, as we rely on the time difference

between our ears to do so.

• ‘Camp in a Box’ box

• Scissors

• Paint

• Remove the lid from your box and cut out two holes large enough to fit your hands through on either end of the box.

• Paint and decorate your box any way you want! Let it dry.

• Check out S.T.E.M #5 to see what fun activity you can do with your new box!

Humans have 5 senses: hearing, touch, smell, sight

and taste. Some other underwater marine life like

sharks and dolphins have an additional sense of echo

location. This is a form of “hearing” that allows them to

“see “ their surroundings.

• Sensory Box (Craft #4)

• Blindfold (optional)

• Items to guess

1. Go around your house collecting random objects to use during the game. Keep these objects hidden —use a bag or a sheet to keep them covered!

2. Choose one player to go first who stands behind the box, with the open end facing away.

3. Have the player close their eyes or wear a blindfold while you place one of the mystery objects inside the box.

4. This player will stick their hands inside the two holes in the box, feel the object, and guess what the object may be.

5. Points can be awarded to players who guess their object correctly!

The odder the item and its “feeling”, the harder it is to

guess it! This said, try to avoid everyday items that

have a distinctive shape or texture. Find things that are

not easy to recognize!

Watch the counsellors perform a skit on the Tiny Recreation YouTube channel.

A counselor is standing alone on stage looking at his/her watch, when finally a camper comes along.

The counselor asks where he/she has been, and the camper replies, “Throwing pebbles in the lake.”

This occurs a few more times as more campers come along and say that they, too, were “Throwing pebbles in the lake.”

A soaking wet camper eventually comes by in completely drenched clothes. The counselor asks, “Who are you?”

“I’m Pebbles!”

• 4 different coloured objects

1. Create a square using all four objects as the corners.

2. To start, have one person in the middle of the square with their eyes closed.

3. On ‘GO!’, the other players will ‘swim’ to a corner (cave) of their choice using their best swimming stroke.

4. Once all players have chosen a cave, the player in the middle will announce a colour without opening their eyes. To make this trickier, the player in the middle can count down from 10. Depending on the size of your playing field, this might mean you have to ‘swim’ very fast to get to a corner before the time is up.

5. Players at the chosen cave will have to complete 10 jumping jacks and then rejoin the game.

To add more of a challenge, each corner could be

associated with a different exercise to do if that cave is

chosen. For example, a yellow corner is squats, a

purple corner is jumping jacks etc.

After watching the video, get your family together and

try and recreate the skit!
