Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council builds caring, confident youth and future leaders.

Our Mission

Page 3: Camp Fire USA Minnesoat Council Annual Report

3Friends,

This past year was an incredible moment in Camp Fire’s history. We celebrated our centennial, marking 100 years of giving youth the tools to become well-rounded adults and future leaders. The profound impact these outdoors and out-of-school time programs have had on literally thousands of youth and families cannot be overstated.

Yet even as we reflect on a century of amazing kids, our work goes on. We strive to maintain the absolute best youth development programs and include more young people each year.

While the names and faces at Camp Fire might have changed since 1910, we are dedicated to the same mission Luther and Charlotte Gulick set in motion 100 years ago; building caring, confident youth and future leaders.

We are reminded of the adage,

We embody the relentless forward movement of a river, constantly exploring new ways and new tools to best serve our youth. But like the river, there is never any doubt of where we are heading or what our ultimate destination will be. Perhaps no other initiative better captures these two strands than our Camp Tanadoona Capital Campaign. Last summer, we announced an effort to raise $1.5 million to refurbish and expand camp facilities. The effect of these renovations will be to preserve and enhance, rather than to alter, Camp Tanadoona’s core mission: providing a bridge between Minnesota youth and the natural environment, and making quality outdoor learning experiences available for all kids. This search for new possibilities is also reflected in our community programs. We have worked hard to develop curricula and to devise new tools for measuring success. But our priorities remain the same. Ultimately, through our work in the community, we are building relationships with and between youth, and giving Minnesota kids the tools to succeed in life.

Thank you for your continuing support. We’ve turned the page on our first 100 years, and we’re proud of the story that we’ve written so far. It’s a story of kids blazing their own trails through life. With your help, we believe the next chapter will be the best yet.

Thank you,

Marnie K. Wells,Chief Executive Officer

Bill Slowter,President of the Board of Directors

Camp Fire’s Centennial 1910-2010

5

Summer 2010 marked 100 years of Camp Fire USA. Founded in Vermont in 1910 by Luther & Charlotte Gulick, Camp Fire has grown tremendously over a century, including here in Minnesota.

On June 3rd, 2010, Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council alumni, staff, supporters, and youth came together at Camp Tanadoona to reflect on their shared history and look ahead to the next 100 years.

City of Chanhassen Mayor, Thomas Furlong, marked the occasion with an official proclamation naming June 3rd, 2010 “Tanadoona Day” in the city.

Camp Tanadoona alum and United States Senator, Amy Klobuchar, provided a keynote address, shared her love of Camp Tanadoona, and even sang her favorite camp song.

The celebration was as much an opportunity to look forward as back. Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council leaders announced the beginning of a capital campaign for Camp Tanadoona. Phase 1 is a $1.5 million investment in preserving Tanadoona’s magic while renovating and improving key structures and facilities.

"At Camp Fire, I've learned how to do my homework everyday" -- Justin, 2nd Grade

6

A funny, spry 2nd grader, Justin has been attending Camp Fire club programs since he was in Kindergarten. Now he can’t wait for the day’s programs to begin. “I always come here after school!”

For more than two years Justin and his siblings, Aiyana and Sumeya, have been involved with the Community Club at the Calibre Ridge Townhomes affordable housing complex in Roseville – and participated in afterschool and summer activities four days a week.

Through Camp Fire’s educational programming, Justin has developed useful study skills that have improved his performance at school. “At Camp Fire, I’ve learned how to do my homework everyday,” says Justin. Camp Fire’s club leaders also tailor their lesson plans to

Justin’s school curriculum, working to reinforce Justin’s classroom learning and to target selected educational development areas.

What keeps Justin coming back to the Community Club, however, is the opportunity for fun and creative play that the programs provide. Justin fondly remembers his first day at the club, when he went swimming with his club friends. This summer, Justin learned about Vietnamese water puppets at the Summer Arts Camp, Camp Fire’s on-site summer camp run in partnership with BareBones, a local puppet theater company. Justin also learned to walk on stilts, and helped to build a haunted house.

But Justin’s favorite part of the day is snack time, because of the chance he gets to share his “roses and thorns”—that is, the best and worst parts of his day.

Camp Fire’s programs have provided Justin with the opportunity to both build on his school experiences and to creatively and productively unwind. Each week the Community Club will be there to help him confront a new and exciting set of challenges and opportunities.

About Our Community ProgramsResearch shows that youth who participate in quality out-of-school time programs are more likely to succeed academically and in life. In the Twin Cities metropolitan area, Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council provides free programs for youth ages 5-16 in community centers, schools, and low-income housing developments. The majority of our clubs meet multiple times per week and all meet for multiple hours each gathering. Our trained, professional staff guide youth through a national curriculum. We give members the tools to achieve their own goals, to connect with nature, and to become leaders in their community.

7Community ProgramsHighlights• New clubs launched at CommonBond Communities’ ❖New Village Housing Cooperative in Minneapolis and Trail’s Edge Townhomes development in Maplewood. Both clubs meet three times each week.

• After years of successfully using the Youth Program ❖Quality Assessment toolkit, Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council helped the national Camp Fire organization pilot an assessment toolkit that could be used by other Camp Fire councils across the country.

• Camp Fire USA Minnesota Council partnered ❖with Rethink Recycling to implement a Community POWER Project. Over several months, Camp Fire club youth learned ways to reuse household items to reduce the amount of garbage their family produces.

Members of the new Camp Fire club at Trail’s Edge Townhomes housing development made a 3-D mural that now hangs in the Camp Fire office.

"It's clear that the work that's being done is of great benefit to the community and all the kids that get to participate."

-Bill Haugh

Bill and Ann Haugh have lived within shouting distance of Camp Tanadoona since they moved to Lake Minnewashta almost two decades ago.

“Sometimes we can hear the kids hoot and holler, which is quite entertaining!” Bill says.

When Ann and Bill married, they each had children of their own. Together they raised a full troupe of kids: Trevor, Leah, Bob and Joe. Two were Tanadoona campers, and the whole family knew the important role the camp played in children’s lives.

“Both Ann and I grew up enjoying the woods ‘up North,’” Bill said. “It was nice to see our kids check out this amazing space.”

Now all of the children have grown up and left for colleges and careers of their own. But Bill and Ann have stayed on at Lake Minnewashta, remaining “lake neighbors” with Camp Tanadoona. And after seeing (and hearing) kids kayaking and enjoying the outdoors for so many years, the Haughs decided to become financial supporters.

“It’s clear that the work that’s being done is of great benefit to the community and all the kids that get to participate,” Bill said. “The piece of land is just amazing - a beautiful wooded wilderness… You’d never know how cool it is unless you went in and checked it out up close and personal.”

Bill knows that it takes a facility like Camp Tanadoona to ensure that kids are able to fully explore, enjoy and appreciate the natural environment that’s often right under their noses. As Camp Tanadoona celebrates its 87th year, Bill hopes to continue his relationship with the organization through its capital campaign.

And he looks forward to having Camp Tanadoona as a neighbor for many years to come.

SPOTLIGHT: DONORS

Bill and Ann Haugh have lived near Camp Tanadoona for years and love hearing the joys of summer echo across Lake Minnewashta.

• Camp Tanadoona saw a 12% increase in the number of ❖camper registrations from summer 2009 to summer 2010.

• Readers of the ❖ Minnetonka Sun Sailor newspaper named Camp Tanadoona the best summer camp for 2010.

• At their 2 ❖ nd annual service day at Camp Tanadoona, volunteers from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) helped beautify camp. Members of three different Camp Fire clubs joined in the fun. For many youth it was their first time at camp.

• A generous grant on behalf of Lorraine E. Anderson, a ❖passionate outdoor enthusiast, provided scholarships for youth to attend the Northwoods Trip to Camp Bluewater in August.

Highlights

About Our Outdoor ProgramsFor all of Camp Fire’s 100 years we have connected young people to nature in order to nurture personal growth and a sense of community. Camps Tanadoona and Bluewater serve as ideal spaces for youth to explore Minnesota’s great outdoors. As part of our commitment to make these experiences available to all youth, we offer scholarships to summer camp and hold annual Club-to-Camp field trips that introduce Camp Fire club members largely from low-income housing developments to nature’s wonder.

SPOTLIGHT: ALUMNI10

This year, we were proud to launch a three year, $1.5 million campaign, aimed at improving and expanding Camp Tanadoona’s facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. Our ultimate goal is to create the absolute best place for youth to learn, grow, and connect with nature. We will breathe life into structures so they can be used year-round and construct new buildings that better serve our community. As we plan these important renovations, we will remain true to the Camp Tanadoona spirit. Our Guiding Philosophy

For the thousands of youth who have come through its gates, Tanadoona is unlike anywhere else. This beautiful space on the shores of Lake Minnewashta has been home to countless new memories and lasting friendships.

Our goal through this campaign is to better live our mission and connect more youth with nature than ever before. An improved nature center and new outdoor classroom will give campers new and better ways to learn about the natural landscape all around them. More outdoor gathering spaces and the addition of interpretive trails will provide fun ways for counselors to engage youth in outdoor learning. We will make buildings more accessible and environmentally friendly year-round with energy efficiencies and green construction practices. At the same time, we will provide a more intimate experience of the great outdoors for everyone who visits our camp. Through these changes, we will preserve the same rustic atmosphere, the same values, and the same guiding philosophy that has kept Tanadoona strong for 87 years.

Campaign for Camp Tanadoona

The entrance to Camp Tanadoona will be just one of many capital campaign projects to improve how Camp Fire connects youth with nature.

Building on Tradition, Kindling Change

Campaign for Camp TanadoonaA strong beginning

We launched this campaign at our Centennial Celebration in June of 2010. The initial support has been breathtaking. A generous silent donor has made an incredible challenge grant of $750,000. That means every dollar raised for the capital campaign will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $750,000.

With early support from individuals and corporations, we have been able to make some important first steps toward our ultimate goals. We have increased the efficiency of Tanadoona buildings, replacing Bluebird Lodge’s roof and water heater, as well as the Dining Hall’s furnace. Volunteers with Life Time Fitness and FCA Construction completely remodeled Corona Restroom (more on page 12). Perhaps most notably to our neighbors, we have constructed a new Camp Tanadoona sign on Highway 41.

As we move forward with this exciting new chapter in Tanadoona’s history, we will look to the Camp Fire community for guidance, advice, and support. With your help, Tanadoona has a strong and vibrant future. And we will always remain mindful of the history that anchors us. As we move ahead together, it is this history that not only preserves our identity, but helps shape our shared future.

A master plan for Camp Tanadoona’s capital campaign. For a more detailed view of this plan please visit www.campfireusa-mn.org/CapitalCampaign

Page 12: Camp Fire USA Minnesoat Council Annual Report

Camp Fire’s Capital Campaign started on the right foot thanks to an amazing group of volunteers from Life Time Fitness and FCA Construction.

Last spring, Camp Fire staff sat down with executives from Life Time Fitness. A partnership bloomed instantly. Both organizations share a passion for healthy lives. Plus the Life Time Fitness headquarters is just two miles from Camp Tanadoona.

“We care about the communities in which we operate,” said Jason Thunstrom, Vice President of Public Relations and Corporate Communications at Life Time Fitness, adding, “and the camp is just a stone’s throw from our offices.”

The team quickly decided remodeling the aging Corona Restroom would be both an important improvement to Camp Tanadoona and a suitable project for Life Time and their construction arm, FCA.

“This was the kick-off project for the Capital Campaign,” explained project manager Eric Burdak, “and we wanted to build something you’d be proud to hang your hat on.”

The team worked at a breakneck pace to complete the entire project in under three months. They convinced dozens of their subcontractors and vendors to donate supplies and labor. The final touches were put on for the Centennial Celebration in June and the results were breathtaking.

Corona Restroom is now a gorgeous, top quality facility. The commitment of time, energy, and expertise from FCA and Life Time Fitness set a high bar for future capital campaign renovations at Tanadoona.

For Thunstrom and the rest of the team it was always about what youth get when they attend camp. “We believe kids will come out of the camp prepared for healthy and active lives,” he said. We whole-heartedly agree.
