Extreme Long ShotExtreme Long Shot• An extreme long shot is designed to show the setting of the video for example: Katy

Perry- Firework had a extreme long shot of Budapest, Hungary in night time. However it doesn’t have to be a shot of a city. It could be a shot of a wall or building however it does tend to be an exterior shot. The shot is generally taken from a distance and is for impression rather than specific information that a extreme close-up would be used for.

Long ShotLong Shot• This shot is designed to show something in life size rather than close up. This would

correspond with the height of the person i.e. an adult male would have more space in the shot compared with a 3 year old girl which makes it easier for the audience to see the person in full e.g. Tinnie Tempah ft Eric Turner- Written in the Stars. Again this is more for establishing rather than looking in more detail however it shows more detail in the costume of the character than if you were to have a close-up

Mid-shotMid-shot• Mid shots have a tendency to be either from the knees up (Mid-long shot – a long shot which isn’t

a full picture of a person but doesn’t have the finer detail you would find in a Mid-close up), Waist (Mid-shot - can show either a person from the waist up – showing the top half of the body- or the waist down – showing the bottom half of the body) or shoulder-up ( Mid-close-up – a shot showing the face and the shoulder but not completely focused on the face). An Example can be Lady Gaga- Alejandro which can see Gaga with in a mid-shot. Some mid-shots can contain more than two people in the shot e.g. Taylor Swift- Teardrops on my Guitar.

Close-upClose-up

• This shot focuses on a specific thing such as a face or a part of the mise en scène rather than a background. It magnifies the object in the shot- imagine if you could see a 40” screen- to the size of the viewers screen. This can show the significance of an object or a person in the narrative- pending how long the shot last. It can show the expression and emotion on a persons face which can let the audience into the mind of that person and what they are singing e.g. Eminem ft Rihanna- Love the Way you Lie.

Extreme Close-upExtreme Close-up

• As stated, it is a even closer version of a close- up. This really shows the finer detail in the persons face or an object that you wouldn’t see in a mid-shot. In a song about break-up this can be a shot of a tear in a video. In most videos it can be a shot of the lips singing or a shot of the eyes as they show the most emotion e.g. David Bowie- Life on Mars?. This shows little detail on the background more on the person or main focus than if you were to get a mid-shot as they show more background in the shot.

High Angle ShotHigh Angle Shot• The camera is elevated above the object or focus of the shot using a crane to give a general

overview. High angles make the object seen seem smaller, and less significant to the story, however it can link to emotion for example: Paloma Faith- New York has a person sitting in a bowling run way looking un-happy as her boyfriend left her for another person and it shows how low she feels. High angle shots can also create decreased height for a person.

Low Angle ShotLow Angle Shot• Low angle shots can increase height or elevates the importance of a person or a

object. Low angle shots can show more of a wall and ceiling (inside scenes- e.g. Cheryl Cole- Parachute) or surrounding area and sky (outside scenes) rather than just a wall or surrounding area that a eye level shot (a shot that is stationary and rather boring in my opinion). A really low angle shot (often referred as a worm-eye view) shows more of the ceiling or sky than the wall or surrounding area, which makes a person seem bigger on a scale than a normal shot

Birds Eye View ShotBirds Eye View Shot• A birds-eye-view shot is a shot that is directly over the action. This angle

makes the audience almost ‘God-like’ as they are looking over the scene like in 30 Seconds to Mars- King and Queens where you can see the tops of the bikers going into a circle. This makes the object seem smaller in comparison to one in another shot.
