*Confession of Sins/Assurance of Forgiveness

We gather as the baptized people of God in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son,

and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that, attentive to your Word, we may confess our sins, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

(silence for reflection and self-examination)

Holy and Immortal One, We live in a world of anguish, and our sin only multiplies our suffering. Our despair discourages others. Our hopelessness paralyzes us from carrying out your work in the world. We pray for mercy, for strength, and for our faith to be restored, knowing that all good things come from you. Amen. God will indeed make all things new. Our Creator knows, hears, and answers the cries of our hearts. Despair no more, for the One who comes in power also comes in love,

and death has no dominion in the world to come. In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, receive

our Lord’s promise of pardon, renewal, and peace which knows no end. Amen. *Hymn of Praise “Blessing, Honor, and Glory” ELW #433

☩GOD’S WORD SPEAKS TO US☩

First Reading: Zechariah 3:8-10 Pew Bible p. 881 The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Psalm 40:3-10 (Read responsively) 3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. 4Happy are those who make the LORD their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods. 5You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted. 6Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. 7Then I said, "Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me 8I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. Second Reading: Revelation 5:1-13 Pew Bible p. 248

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

*Gospel Acclamation: “Agnus Dei”

Alleluia, alleluia, for the Lord, God Almighty reigns. Alleluia, alleluia, for the Lord, God Almighty reigns.

Alleluia. Holy, holy are you Lord, God Almighty. Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb.

For You are holy, holy are you Lord, God Almighty. Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb. Amen.

*Profession of Faith: Apostle’s Creed Page 105 I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost August 20, 2017

Revelation’s throne room scene continues with a vision of God holding a scroll in his hand and only one is worthy to open the scroll and make God’s will known-the Lion of Judah who is also the Lamb who was sacrificed. In other words, the death of Christ (the Lamb) is the way that the power of God is revealed and unleashed in the world. The Lamb is the primary way in which Christ is identified in Revelation.

Daily Bible Readings @ Home Sunday – Read Revelation 5:1-13: Jesus is pictured as both a Lion (symbolizing his authority and power) and a Lamb (symbolizing his submission to God’s will). Christ the Lamb won the greatest battle of all; defeating all the forces of evil by dying on the cross. The promise of Revelation is that we will participate in Christ’s victory, not because of our effort or goodness, but because he has promised eternal life to all who believe in him.

Monday – Read Revelation 5:14: In response to Christ the Lamb’s victory, all the company of heaven gathered around the throne of God sing praises to Christ for only the Lamb, Jesus Christ, not Satan, holds the future. Jesus Christ is in control. Amen! So be it! (which is what Amen means).

Tuesday – Read Revelation 6:9-17: The day of judgement is described in vivid detail in this passage and yet for believers this should not be something that frightens us; for those who belong to Christ will receive a reward rather than punishment on that day. Give thanks to God for Christ’s gift on the cross and the promise of your reward on the Day of Judgement.

Wednesday – Read Revelation 7:1-8: This passage describes how God’s justice (or Day of Judgement) will be mercifully delayed while all the faithful are sealed as God’s own forever. Although the faithful will not escape suffering and death on earth, there will be no “second” or “eternal” death for those sealed for Christ. Make the sign of the cross on your forward and remember that you are a beloved child of God sealed for Christ by the Holy Spirit in baptism.

Thursday – Read Revelation 8: As the seventh seal is broken there is silence in heaven in preparation for what is to come. Tomorrow morning get up early, find a quiet place, and be still for half an hour. What does the silence do for your spirit?

Friday – Read Revelation 9: Incredibly, despite the warnings and the destruction that falls around them, there are those who still do not repent and turn back to God. Sin has a way of inching its way into our hearts and minds and making us deaf to God. Take time today, to ask God to show you any sin that may have taken root in your life; confess it and seek the Spirit’s help in overcoming it.

Saturday – Revelation 10: John is forbidden to reveal the final stage of God’s judgement, a point often overlooked by those who claim to have solved the “mystery of God” (v.7). Although we may not know when or where or even how the world will end, let us trust and believe that God has already won the victory so we need not be afraid when the day of Judgement comes.
