What’s happening in … Calliope State School Calliope Kids are: Safe Respectful Responsible 28 May 2019 2B News Term 2 is well underway and we have been very busy in 2B. 10 weeks is not long to cram all the fun and learning in that we need to, so we are working hard to get it all done. In Science we have been learning all about different materials and how we can use them to create something new. We have been completing design challenges as teams to put our new knowledge to good use. In 2B we are enjoying the excitement and engagement that we get from these activities. Reading is another focus in our class that we are continuing with this term. We have been reading lots of different stories and poems to help us develop our reading skills. Every day in 2B we love reading alone, with a partner or in small groups to grow our passion for reading as a whole class. We are all looking forward to the rest of Term 2 and excited to see what learning opportunities will be coming next in 2B.

2B News Term 2 is well underway and we have been very busy in 2B. 10 weeks is not long to cram all the fun and learning in that we need to, so we are working hard to get it all done. In Science we have been learning all about different materials and how we can use them to create something new. We have been completing design challenges as teams to put our new knowledge to good use. In 2B we are enjoying the excitement and engagement that we get from these activities.
Reading is another focus in our class that we are continuing with this term. We have been reading lots of different stories and poems to help us develop our reading skills. Every day in 2B we love reading alone, with a partner or in small groups to grow our passion for reading as a whole class. We are all looking forward to the rest of Term 2 and excited to see what learning opportunities will be coming next in 2B.
PRINCIPAL’S PIECE
We have already exceeded the half way point of the term, as we enter Week 6! It has been great to visit
classrooms and see the ways in which our students are engaging with their learning.
A Big Week of Reading
Last week, we saw two exciting reading events take place at the school, Pyjama Reading and Simultaneous
Read along.
Thank you to the P&C who supported the Pyjama Reading with milo and cookies and thanks to our guest
readers and all families who attended. We had in excess of 100 children join us to celebrate in shared reading.
Congratulations to Mrs Goodman-Jones and her actors, for making the reading of Alpacas with Macracas even
more fun, with the acting out of scenes.
Remember to look for opportunities to read every day!
Daniel Morcombe Visit
On 3 June 2019, we are fortunate to be hosting a visit and information session for our students in Years 3-6
with Bruce and Denise, from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
The session will be held between 1pm-2pm in the hall.
Topics covered in the session will include:
- Recognise - unsafe situations, body clues
- React - how to react in an unsafe situation
- Report - safety hand, identifying five safe adults (including one not in the home)
They will also talk about Daniel and his story in a positive way.
The presentation will be supervised by school staff. Parents are more than welcome to attend and hear
the messages shared.
Should you have any concerns with your child’s participation in the information session, please
contact their class teacher or office to notify of their non-participation.
Due to the timing of this presentation, the second lunch break for Year 3-6 students will be altered.

Rotary Hand Over Dinner
Last night our Rotakids and families were invited to join with the Calliope Rotary to observe the
changing of their executive committee. Thank you to outgoing President- Marnie Rayment for all that
you have done with our students in your role and congratulations to incoming President Merv. We look
forward to continuing the positive relationship that our students have with your club.
A special congratulations to both Marnie and former Calliope teacher Miss Alexandra Heron on being
named as Paul Harris Fellow’s for their work in the local and global community.
P&C Day
Last Friday we acknowledged our hardworking and dedicated P&C Association members and school volunteers. Many thanks for your wonderful and selfless contribution to our school and school community.
The PBL lesson for today is on allowing other students to learn. At school it is
important to remember that we are part of a community, and that we have a
responsibility to our peers to allow them to learn without disruption. An
important life skill for kids is to learn that they are part of a greater whole,
and some of the reasons why it is important to allow others to learn include:
- everyone has personal goals that they are striving for;
- other students may be genuinely striving for As in their subject;
- we would expect the same courtesy to be shown to us when we wish
to learn;
- and, the path to becoming a better adult involves us developing
consideration for other people.
Please discuss with your child/children how important it is to allow others to
learn.
Fantastic Fun Friday was on last Friday and a large number of kids came along
and enjoyed ‘Science Day.’ There was balloon rockets, Sphero and Bee Bot
time, cyclone in a bottle, the challenge of how many drops of water they could
fit on a 5 cent coin, and the most popular event – making slime. A big thank
you to the Rotakids and School Leaders who came along and assisted.
Lastly, another reminder about the big end of Semester event this year in
week 10. All the students who get an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ for behaviour on their report
cards will be invited to the Skate Park for a scooter riding session. We look
forward to seeing your kids there.

Attendance Congratulations to 6A who had a great attendance rate for Week 5. Their attendance rate was 99% for the week! Also congratulations to the 9 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 5. Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Reminder the next competition is Tuesday 4 June 8.45am – 2.30pm. The
payment is due on Friday 31 May. The venue has changed to the
GLADSTONE PCYC. Thank you to the P&C for supporting our Chess Club.

If you’re like most families, chores are probably one of the most frequent
causes of family disagreements. Children whine and complain, adults nag,
arguments break out, and nothing gets accomplished.
Sometimes it feels like taking the trash out yourself would be much faster
than arguing with your children about having to do it. In those moments, we
need to remember there are many benefits to kids doing the chores.
• Chores help our kids develop important life skills: responsibility, cooperation and teamwork • Chores foster a sense of self-worth and belonging • Chores prepare children to be self-sufficient in the future
Here are 5 effective tips to get your children to do CHORES
Stress-Free!
1. Don’t call them ‘chores’ Reframe chores by calling them ‘responsibilities’, ‘ways to be helpful’ or
‘family contributions’. Emphasise it’s every family members responsibility to
help take care of themselves and one another. Children are much more
willing to help around the house when they view these tasks as a meaningful
way to contribute to the family.
2. Set a positive, cheerful tone Remember to set a good example. If you grumble about your responsibilities
and family contributions, children will likely do the same. Encourage your
children with positive phrases to build resilience in them. eg You are helpful.
You kept trying. That was a great accomplishment. I knew you could do it.
You’re really improving. You worked really hard. Your ideas matter. You are
learning. I believe in you.
3. Set reasonable expectations Ask your children to complete age-appropriate chores. If they are struggling,
ask if there’s anything you can do to be helpful: “It seems like you’re having
trouble getting started. Is there something I can do to help?” Complete the
chore with the child the first several times, if necessary.

Remember the “Power of Yet”!! Before you knew how to do something, you
didn’t know how to do it YET. When you think you can’t do something, add
the word ‘YET’ at the end of your sentence. I can’t do that …YET
4. Create visuals It’s an excellent way to provide support and set them up for success. These
could be images of your children doing age-appropriate helpful tasks around
the house. Step-by-step picture instructions for how to complete a task, and
even pictures depicting where items belong in the house.
5. Offer choice Offering choices often increases a child’s willingness to help around the
house. You might ask ‘Do you want to take out the rubbish or sweep the
kitchen floor?’
BONUS Tip: Praise effectively - When children help around the house, offer encouragement to reinforce the behaviour. You might say, ‘You set the table so we could all enjoy a meal together.
