New Friends for our SPC Community

A couple of weeks ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet two great men from the local Bhutanese community in Brisbane, named Puskar and Tula. Puskar and Tula are two of approximately 150-170 refugees from Bhutan settled here in Brisbane. The majority of Bhutanese families live in the northern region of Brisbane around the Bray Park area. There are approximately 5000-6000 Bhutanese people in Australia. In talking to Puskar and Tula, I was struck by their wisdom and openness in sharing their story and their enthusiasm to form a relationship with our College. Bhutan is a unique country, so as a community, we have a special opportunity to make friends with our local Bhutanese neighbours. As a starting point in this relationship, we are organizing a simple family BBQ, game of football (soccer) and picnic day on Saturday 6 September – there is a flyer advertising the event on the following page of the Calling. If you would like to come to the day, please feel free to bring your whole family. It will be a very relaxed day - for catering purposes, if you plan to come along, please email Mrs Helen Righetti at [email protected] to let us know rough numbers. If you have any questions about the event, please email Mr Jonathon Hall on [email protected].

The game of football will be laidback and involve all ages – our Year 5s are encouraged to be involved, through to our Year 12s, along with some brave staff – mums and dads, you are also more than welcome to brush off the Socceroos jersey and give it a go! Siblings also are more than welcome. There will be all ages of our visitors playing as well. The event will take place here at the College on and around the back oval, so no need for football boots – just joggers are fine. We will be meeting with students to advertise this event as well – we will begin by inviting our football community and their families, along with anyone else with an interest in welcoming this group of people into our community. Our students involved in “ERA for Change”, our advocacy network, will also play a key leadership role on the day and in this developing relationship. As advocates in a Catholic and Edmund Rice context, we firmly believe we have an obligation to welcome the stranger, a challenge set for us very clearly in Matthew’s gospel. Soon enough though of course, our new Bhutanese neighbours will not be strangers – they will simply be our friends. And what a privilege for us that is! Have a great week.

Parents, talk with your children… Queensland Child Protection Week is soon approaching, September 1 to September 14 2014. During this important time we ask parents to spend some time discussing child safety information with their children to increase their child’s awareness in protective behaviours. Protective behaviours is a term that is used to refer to the behaviours which assist children to recognise situations where their personal space or sense of safety may be compromised. By having conversations with your children about protective behaviours, children are provided with knowledge that can help protect them in unsafe situations when you as parents are not present. By having these conversations with your children, you empower them by giving them permission to talk about difficult or problematic situations they are facing. Children have the right to feel safe and act in a way that keeps them safe. So … what can you do? Help your child in increasing their self-esteem and confidence so that they can empower themselves in otherwise potentially powerless circumstances. You can do this by, learning, discussing and prac tic ing protective behaviours with your child. Protective behaviour discussions should cover the following:

Private parts, Rules about touching, Good and bad secrets, Trust and safety networks / stranger danger, Warning signs, Feelings, Boundaries,

Tip: When engaging your child in a conversation about protective behaviours, it’s important to reassure them they are not in trouble and that they are safe. When talking about safety, it’s important to not leave the child feeling scared or disempowered, but instead, letting the child know these discussions are to help provide them with awareness about their own safety. Lastly, try make this learning fun via the use of games, craft or humour and finish the conversation with reinforcing your child with the knowledge that they have the ability to keep themselves safe.

Sport Support Group We wish to continually thank the cheerful parents and friends who assisted us at the home games at Curlew Park during Term Two and look forward to seeing many new faces in the Callan Centre for Basketball this term. Many hands make light work! Our monthly meeting of volunteer, devoted parents for September will take place on Monday 1 September at 6.30 pm in the Morven Board Room. All parents and friends are welcome, especially those with sons heavily involved in the College and Representative Team programs. This especially includes Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field parents for the present season. The meeting normally lasts for about an hour. We look forward to welcoming you into our Group.

The Power of Presence What do you know about Edmund Rice? His values? His mo-tives? How do you see the legacy of Edmund Rice alive in the St. Patrick’s College community? What’s the one theme that resonates with you when you re-flect on the life and example of Edmund Rice? What work can be done as teachers and parents to ensure that that we continue to educate and raise our young men in the spirit of Edmund Rice? Until this week I thought I had some sound answers to these questions. However, it wasn’t until I spent three days of this week exploring with other teachers the life and mission of Edmund Rice that I realised my previous answers to these questions would have been off the mark. During my time on this staff retreat I was struck with the power of presenc e. Not being a bystander or perhaps just spending time with others. Instead, true presenc e is about putting on hold one’s own val-ues, experiences, beliefs and judgments and allowing another’s personal story be truly heard. With this comes compassion and understanding. And in turn, both parties are empowered into a right, just and caring relationship. Our College’s strong focus on pastoral care is an indicator that we value this idea of presenc e. Our Tutor Groups, retreats, extra-curricular activities, parent-teacher interviews, Mass and liturgies are all deliberate opportunities that we provide our community to be present with one another. Being present requires a conscious and deliberate action. It means putting away the mobile phone, taking out the ear buds, turning off the laptop, turning off the TV, sharing a meal. Being present demands listening, no judging, no opinions, no criticising. Some have summed it up as “wasting time” with others. As a College we value community. It’s through being present to others that we strengthen our community - one interaction at a time. It’s through our staff and students being present to one another that each are formed into right, just and caring relationships, just as Edmund had hoped, dreamed and achieved. It’s now up to us to keep Edmund’s legacy alive at St. Patrick’s College.
