Dear Church Family,

The Transfiguraon was a glorious climax to Jesus’ earthly ministry. Jesus’

appearance was changed and the disciples present beheld his glory as the

Eternal Son of God. The Gospel writers use this as a glorious end to Act 1

before turning down the dark road toward the cross.

But something happens just before that pivotal experience that really

encapsulates the meaning of it all. Jesus is having a conversaon with his

disciples and asked them, “Who do men say that the Son of Man is” (Ma/.

16:13). Peter was the only one who rightly confessed Jesus to be “the

Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Ma/ 16:16). It is here in this powerful

confession that Jesus explains everything about what is to happen. With

one phrase, Jesus reveals why he came and what it is he is about to do.

I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. -

Ma/. 16:18b

Do you see why Jesus came?

Why was Jesus born? For his church. Why did Jesus live a sinless life? For

his church. Why did Jesus suffer and die? For his church. Why did Jesus rise

again? For his church. Why did Jesus ascend to the right hand of the

Father? For his church. Why did Jesus send the Holy Spirit? For his church.

For whom is Jesus interceding even now? For his church. For whom is

Jesus returning? For his church.

Do you see it?

The church belongs to one Lord—The Lord Jesus Christ who “purchased

[it] with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). It is not my church. It is not your

church. It is the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is his bride (Eph. 5:25-

33). It is his body (1 Cor. 12;27). It is his family (Heb. 2:10-13). The Good

News of the Gospel is that we have been incorporated into this wonderful

family through faith in Jesus—But it’s only owner and Lord is Jesus.

And what would the Lord of our church have us do? To “make disciples,

bapzing them… teaching them” (Ma/. 28:19-20). Are we about our

Father’s business? Or are we about our own?

This is Christ’s church; his beloved, spotless bride for whom he shed his

blood. Let us not ignore that sacrifice by ignoring our commission, by

building our own kingdoms, or by striving for our own goals. Let us work

with all of our might to “build up” the Body of Christ in love, peace,

humility, and grace.

There’s a community around us suffering under the curse of sin. That’s

where the real mission is. That’s where the real conflict is. Get your armor

on, grab your sword, and let’s go to war with the real enemy.

Jesus, the Lord of the Church invites us into the war with him. Will you

fight?

Let’s GO!
