EBVS EXPLAINED

An animals breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we willnever know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. Theseestimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).

In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directlycompared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the samesex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirectcomparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigreelinks between the groups.

EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as + ive or - ivedifferences between an individual animals genetics difference and the genetic base to which the animal iscompared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +50 kg for 600-Day Weight is estimated to have genetic merit50 kg above the breed base of 0 kg. Since the breed base is set to an historical benchmark, the average EBVsof animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed.

The absolute value of any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particularanimals should be viewed as being above or below breed average for a particular trait.

This years bulls are predominately polled as we strive to breed a 100% polled herd. We want to get to a point where

we can guarantee our buyer polled progeny.

The sires of this years sale bulls are all polled and represent some of the most productive cattle from Bavaria and

Canada. These bulls have produced soft coated easy doing cattle with good EMAs and very good IMF percentages.

We would expect these traits to be reproduced in their progeny.

We have heard only positive comments from purchasers over the last few years and those buyers have reported good

weaner sale results. Our own vealers have made up to 190c/kg this year.

Morton stud was founded in 1972 by Emilys father John Corbin, and was based at Lucindale. Breeding functionalcattle with softness, muscling, temperament and soundness have always been at the forefront of the breeding

program. These basic principals have not changed since the stud was purchased in 2010 by Emily and Scott

Davidson with the stud being relocated to Marcollat. The stud joins the Davidsons commercially focused sheep and

cattle operation that includes the property at Marcollat, cropping and feedlot property at Snowtown and a pastoralproperty north of Hawker in the Mid North.

Progeny in this years sale are from our outstanding figured $10,000 Sire Woonallee Dynamic D18. His progeny are

dark red, solid in colour with great carcass attributes. Our Red Angus sire Jillangolo Essex E55 was the top priced

bull for that drop from the Jillangolo stud and goes back to the very reliable Anama Red Angus stud program. Bulls

offered here have tested negative for Pestivirus and are a portion of our drop with others being available for private

selection on property.
