About EdmontonWith more than one million people living in the Greater Edmonton region, Edmonton is the largest, northernmost municipality
in North America. The city is situated at the confluence of prairie and boreal forest, its river valley constituting the longest
stretch of connected urban parkland in North America.
For millennia, people of many nations have called Edmonton home. The Indigenous peoples of the area, and the Métis in the
1800s, laid the foundations of this thriving community. Situated in the heart of Treaty No. 6 territory, Edmonton is now home to
Canada’s second-largest urban Indigenous community. The city’s continual development as a thriving urban centre encourages
ongoing migration of people from across Canada and around the world.
Deep histories and shared future visions imbue Edmonton with an energetic diversity that contributes to a dynamic urban
landscape alive with arts and culture, business, research and development, and industry.
A spirit of revitalization and renewal fuels the city from Downtown to the suburbs. Major infrastructure projects include
recreation centres, roadways, streetscapes, and public transit, which in turn provide public art opportunities through the City’s
“Percent for Art to Provide and Encourage Art in Public Areas” policy.
Artworks commissioned through the Percent for Art Program are accessioned into the City of Edmonton Public Art Collection.
With more than 230 pieces, the Collection includes visual art from a variety of disciplines by local, national, and international
artists.
Rossdale Pocket Park ProjectThe Rossdale Park Project expands the existing Rossdale Linear park using land that is part of the fenced property surrounding
Fire Station 21. The revitalized park will offer an inviting, usable, and safe space to the public. Additional amenities will include
greenery, seating, and improved access to the network of River Valley pedestrian and cycling trails.
Located in the River Valley Flats, the historic Rossdale neighbourhood is significant to Edmonton’s Indigenous and heritage
communities. Notable sites include: EPCOR’s decommissioned Rossdale Power Plant, and functioning Water Treatment Facility;
the RE/MAX baseball field, the Rossdale Burial Site. Fire Station 21, which is due to be reactivated, is adjacent to the Rossdale
Linear Park.
The finished park will stretch two city blocks along 94 avenue from 101 street to just past 100A street.
Public Art Opportunity The Edmonton Arts Council, on behalf of the City of Edmonton, seeks an artist or artist team to create an exterior sculptural
installation for the Rossdale Pocket Park. The artwork can be existing, in as new condition, or a new creation. The sculpture(s)
should be of intimate scale to suit the park’s setting.
Artwork LocationThe artwork(s) will be sited in the park’s northwest corner. Two to four potential sites will be available (see page 3). Artwork(s) will
be placed on brick plinths measuring 750mm x 750mm x 1200mm (see page 7 for an example).
