Personal Written Composition

Roberto Hache Perozo

Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, a computer enthusiast I started working with graph-ic design at the age of fteen for a local webpage. Making my way to Montreal I became an ocial designer and web developer in 2011 at a local college, then I continued my studies in Creative Arts at LaSalle College.

My rst piece is a portrait inspired by early 20th century Fauvism art; particularly by Henri Matis-se the leader of the movement. The use of bright color to express emotion is a key factor in this style. The second piece is a critique to my to a political issue ongoing in my home country the Dominican Republic,I got the idea from contemporary artists Carole Condé and Karl Beridge but as the project matured I got a higher inuence from artist Ron English.

Pitch

I am a graphic designer from the Dominican Republic who has been working with computers from a young age. I received my first Personal Computer when I was around six years old, from then I have always been very curious as to what I can do with it. At the age of nine I began to understand what the internet was all about. Back then computers where not accessible to all ten year olds so I was very lucky and I never forgot that. I was so curious that one day I could be making a song with a now classic loop player and the next day I would be experimenting with a video editing software. That is when I began to grow interested in design. One day I discovered all the Adobe softwares (formerly Macromedia Softwares) and pushing every button I tough myself some basic knowledge. It was around the age of fifteen that I was already at an advanced level and began helping a friend of mine with animations for his webpage. When I graduated high school, because of my math skills I believed that business was the right path to point my career in. I chose marketing as a career but after two years struggling to get a good grade but only getting barely passing ones I dived fully into graphic and web design. This was almost three years ago when I decided to change schools and I got my degree a year and a half later at Herzing College. I did an internship at Agence Production Interface Design for six months had increidible experience working with people who tough me tons of design knowledge. When I was done, I wanted to give more meaning to my work, emotionally but also artistically. This is when I chose to studied Creative Arts and Literature at LaSalle College. This past year and a half I have learned a number of important factors that have helped me in my career. Keeping contact with past clients from my native country I have always spared some time for some freelance work over the internet. I have built two websites completely on my own and that has given me a lot a confidence but it has also shown me that I still have a lot to learn. That is why not only I constantly read books and articles on the web about how to program the right way. My career is barely at its beginning, I plan to work for the next few years and when I get enough experience I'd like to broaden my horizons in video editing and three dimensional design for television and movies.

Pitch Before I started my program at LaSalle I had not touched paint since I was a little kid. At first it was frustrating because I literally had picked up where I left off. When I look at my first piece for this project I feel very proud because it took me a long time to get it to look how I pictured it. Just like the world we live in, my piece revolutionized as it was being created. I began as a simple portrait from my imagination but as I went on the piece took more meaning. As I went through a rough patch in my life subconscious-ly the portrait became somewhat surreal and I created a floating head detached from it's neck but the neck itself had been detached from its body. A representation of how I lost part of myself and that is where the title came along “who tuned off the light?” it shows how a part of me is lost but at the same time the head is held straight represent-ing my strength. The grey background represents darkness and confusion and the bright yellow represents light and enthusiasm to grow from the experience that I am going through, it also shows that strength is important at all times.

Because I dedicated so much time to the first piece given that my painting skills where most improved while painting it, the second piece got a delay start. I decided to approach a political issue since the first one felt so personal after all. Having Ron English as an inspiration is just as good as it gets. His work just moved me from the moment I saw it, he approaches political and capitalist themes and critiques them in a fun an joyful way that displays the real evil behind propaganda. I chose to address an issue from my country because it is what matters the most to me. For years now, our corrupt government has been trying to sell a virgin beach that is the home to the “Carey” turtle; a nearly extinct species that only lays its eggs once a year in that area. This animal is a precious creature with a beautiful brown shinny shell. If you know anything about turtles it is probably that they lay their eggs in the sand and then go back in the water. If twelve eggs are laid, only about two make it to an adult life. Most get distracted and go the opposite way of the water while those who make it to the water are threatened by predators. If the beach where to be sold, the species would be extinct withing a few years. The baby turtles would get distracted by the sound of people and the human made light as they are usually guided into the water by the moonlight and the sound of waves. It has been over ten years already that activists have been fighting this cause. I does not cease to surprise me the integrity our people have when it comes to protection our territory and animals. Usually in a third world country the people always loose and every year the government is closer to sell this beautiful beach. In response to their intents I took a picture of the National Palace, where the president lives and works and recreated it as an illustration. I proceeded to filling the front yard with cartoon like turtles in relaxing poses (similar to Ron English's sexy cows), in order to make a point of how we should preserve our nature and the only thing that should be extinct is our politicians and their way of doing things.
