At the Novembermembership meet-ing at DART Auto,the RMR 2011 boardwas confirmed. Theofficers for 2011 areRex Heck, President;

Rick Goncalves, 1st Vice President; JimWidrig, 2nd Vice President; Greg John-son, Secretary; George Hoge,Treasurer; Nancy Warren, Membership;Jeremy Rosenberger, Newsletter; andDave Speights, Past President.Congratulations to the new board. When you see one of these folks, besure to introduce yourself. We wouldlike to get to know you so we can makethe club what you want it to be.

By now you should have your plansall made to attend the RMR HolidayParty on Friday, December 10! Thisshould be a great event at a newvenue—the Lone Tree Golf Club—andan opportunity to talk with friends, bench race about the events of theyear, and make plans for 2011. We arealready well on our way to organizingthe 2011 RMR Club events and haveour dates set on the event calendar forthe coming year. What we need next isto secure volunteers from the club toserve as event chairs and co-chairs for2011. Here is your opportunity to makeor keep a resolution to become moreactive in the running of your club.

Jim Widrig, the 2nd Vice President forRMR in 2011, is responsible for recruit-ing event chairs, holding an eventchairperson training meeting andkeeping the event calendar up to date.It takes many volunteers to keep theevents on track and working like afinely-tuned Porsche throughout theyear.

If you have participated in a clubevent in the past, undoubtedly you

have thought about chairingan event, doing it better than the per-son before—or perhaps you have saidto yourself, “I should step up and vol-unteer to help out.” Now is your time!

The annual Event Chairperson Train-ing will be held on January 15, 2011.You are welcome to attend this trainingif you would like to find out about whatit takes to put on an event such as anAutocross, Tour, Rally, or a Driver Edu-cation Event at High Plains Raceway. You will be joined by others that havealready volunteered to help out in2011 as chairs or co-chairs, as well asthose that have more regular roles inthe events. At the Event Training, youwill be given information about how toplan and accomplish a successfulevent, including information about howregistration works, how the Chief Driv-ing Instructor plans run groups andlines up instructors for a DE, the budg-eting for events, how rallies and toursare planned out, and what resourcesare available from the club to pull it alloff.

For 2011, we would like to haveenough volunteers (experienced pastvolunteers and new event volunteers)to be able to pair them up to mentorand ease the learning curve in runningan event. There is plenty of work to goaround. You will find the effort satisfy-ing and rewarding as you put a littleback into the organization, get to knowsome members better, and get off thesidelines and into the inner workings ofwhat makes this Porsche Club tick.

Please let Jim, myself or anotherRMR Board member know if you wouldlike to chair, co-chair or volunteer foran event in 2011. Jim may just have asign-up list for those interested at theHoliday Party!

It’s hard to believethat I’ve been doingthe “newsletterthing” for a full yearnow. Looking backon the past twelvemonths of newsletterproduction, I am

reminded of the changes (such asstreamlining the layout, significantlyincreasing the circulation, reducing theuse of color, and of course changingthe title to High Gear) as well as theyear’s highlights (such as January’sspecial 2009 Porsche Parade issue, andthe occasional budget-stretching foradditional color pages to cover suchcaptivating events as our club race). As a first-time newsletter editor, it’sbeen a big year for me—this little clubof ours is highly dynamic, and trying tokeep up with all the goings-on posesquite a challenge!

You may have wondered—or perhapsyou haven’t—about what’s involved inproducing the newsletter each month. While I can’t say that I have it down toa science, there is a fairly straightfor-ward, repeatable process that I follow.

Around the 5th of each month, theprevious month’s files are copied tocreate the new issue. Since manypages feature “static” design elementsthat don’t change much (or at all) fromone issue to the next, this is certainlyeasier than starting from scratch everytime! Any photos, articles, etc. that areno longer needed are removed—result-ing in some very empty pages, to befilled over the next fortnight or so.

Over the next few days, working inQuark XPress, the usual updates occur:The event calendar is updated, andclassified ads are inserted as they

arrive. Ads are also forwarded to Web-master Scott Rogers, who posts themon the Web site in pretty short order.By the 10th of the month (the contentsubmission deadline), the monthlycolumns will have started to trickle in.Some columnists submit their contentlike clockwork, while others (nameswithheld to protect the guilty) willreceive a gentle nudge or two. Duringthis time, I may coordinate with vari-ous event chairs and authors of featurearticles to help get content finalized.

If all goes well, most of the content islaid out by the 20th or so—although ifthere is a major event around thistime, I may hold the issue just longenough to get the last-minute content.(In this day and age of instant newscoverage, it’s nice if we can read aboutsomewhat recent events in High Gear, isn’t it?) Expired classified ads aredeleted, a cover photo is selected (if ithadn’t been already), and the table ofcontents is finalized.

Two PDF files (totaling about 70 MB)are then rendered, and the whole thingis sent off to Columbine Copy & Print-ing, along with a mailing list generated(primarily) from the PCA database.Columbine works their usual magic toproduce beautiful hard copies, whicharrive in your mailboxes a few dayslater. All told, editorial effort amountsto about an hour per finished page.

Sound like fun? Perhaps you’d beinterested in becoming the “backup”editor—a position that has so far goneunfilled, but would take over editorialresponsibilities in the event of anemergency. Hopefully your serviceswould never need to be called upon, but contingency plans are good tohave. Inquire within. Happy holidays!

Eiskhana is a fun day to enjoy theunique experience of driving on ice. Itwill be a great opportunity to testyour car, your tires and your skill.

The event will be run like anautocross; “cone chasing” will berequired when you are not driving.Since January in Georgetown is coldand often windy, plan to dress in lay-ers and wear warm boots, hats andgloves.

Runs will be timed for the purposes ofbragging rights. Porsches are ofcourse welcome, but not required—feel free to bring your winter driverwith snow tires or studded tires.

No pre-tech will be required. Since

speeds and g-forces are low, we willnot require top tech, but we highlyrecommend de-cluttering your carbefore you drive.

Restroom facilities will be available, but there will be no concessions orrefreshments provided—although youcould make your own “snow cones.”

Hint from the school of (literal) hardknocks: The ice on Georgetown Lakeis very slippery. While your car won’ttip over, walking can be hazardous.Wearing ice grippers on your feet willhelp you stay upright. Upright isgood.

There is no pre-registration; just showup in the morning and register on-site.

eiskhana: the slickest event of the yearSaturday, January 22 on Georgetown Lake

“It’s About the Drive” is the slogan forTarga Newfoundland. And so it was.But first, you have to get there!

Chapter, the First: Getting ThereA long time ago, at an informal gath-

ering, Martha Vail mumbled somethingabout wanting to do Targa Newfound-land. I, of course, raised my hand andallowed that I had a car, and “Team CarpeDiem” was born. I was quite eager toparticipate in Targa Newfoundland, since David and I were literally ready toget in the 356 and head up there in2004, when suddenly his illness gotworse and we couldn’t go. (Note—awee bit of David rode in the glove boxthis time).

I told Martha that I would deal withthe logistics and equipment and that Iwould drive; all she had to do was navi-gate and, perhaps, scare up somesponsorship dollars. True to form, Imade “The List.” It was many pageslong, with all of the information fromthe Targa Competition Rules and how tofit my little red car into the rules for aModern, Level 1 Classification (basicallya stock, but race-prepped, vehicle).“The List” included guesstimates oncost for each line item. As it turned out,we were good guessers.

At that time, we also agreed on ourgoals for Targa. Our goals were to 1) fin-ish, 2) remain good friends and 3) bringthe car home in the same condition aswhen we left. Greg Holland, our men-tor—who has done severalTargas—mentioned that weshould try for a Targa plate bybeating the “Targa” times, whichare the base time (the time the“pros” shoot for) plus a percent-age. We thought we’d see how itwent after a few stages, but itwasn’t a goal to “win”anything.

Time passed, and we startedchecking items off the list.Targa scrutineer David Lambert

time. For ourselves, we would fly toRochester, then fly from Toronto to St.John’s with three days to spare to“acclimatize.” That meant that afterTarga, we had to stay an extra 3 days—at a spa—then reverse the trip. Thatwas the plan... then suddenly it wastime to head off on the adventure.

There were little things that croppedup—but, all in all, things went reallywell, the stars aligned, and everyone ina long chain of dependent eventsworked little miracles and got us there.

was very helpful in guiding our carpreparation. Eurosport Automotive’sDave, Sean and Garry provided themechanical and technical work, and JeffMitchell—bless his ingenuity—fabricated an oil cooler protector thatturned out to be critical. Mitch atCheckpoint Racing helped get ushooked up with the rally computer, intercoms and such. It was an interest-ing process, morphing a track car into arally car, but now that we’ve done itonce, it will be easier next time.

Next, we needed to get ourselves andthe car to Newfoundland. Shipping a carfrom Denver to Canada and across thewater to the Province ofNewfoundland/Labrador proved to bean “interesting” and very pricey exer-cise. We had originally thought we’dship the car to and from Rochester, NY,where Martha’s dad lives, then borrow/rent a truck and trailer and drive to St.

John’s ourselves. Silly, silly, silly girls. As luck would have it, though, I lookedon the Targa Forum early on and discov-ered someone who was transportingtwo cars from Toronto to St. John’s andwanted another one on board. We con-nected and made a deal. I usedIntercity Lines and Enclosed VehicleTransport to get the car from Denver toRochester and back, and all that wasleft for us to do was drive across theborder between Rochester and Toronto.Ask us about the customs officer some-

These are the people who got us out of“interesting” situations and made ourtrip possible:

An emergency brake shoe broke intransit to Rochester, and Craig of Auto-metrics made room for us in hisschedule and installed a new oneovernight.

The intercom system didn’t get wiredinto the car electrical system before weleft, so Martha’s friend Eloy hooked itup in Rochester. Eloy’s wife, Mary, andMartha’s dad, Rex, helped us get thecar and all of our luggage fromRochester to Scott’s place outsideToronto.

Scott Rogers, our hauler in Toronto, managed to get six new tires for us andmade magic happen when his dealermessed up the order. He got the car

there and back in good time and ingreat shape. He was also available atthe service stops for help with mechani-cal stuff, should we have neededit—except when he was rebuilding“Crash” Corrigan’s motor.

Our crew (my brother Bryan) jumpedright in after he arrived andreconnected the rear swaybar after ithad come loose sometime during thetrip. He gamely got under the car in thehotel parking lot in a fine drizzle anddid the reattachment, still groggy fromhis trip in from San Jose. The next day, during registration, he also had to movethe fire extinguisher mount so thatMartha’s feet could brace on the frontof the passenger compartment. Thosetwo fixes were the only things he had todo crew-wise, except add a couple of

quarts of oil along the way and checkthe tires for us each morning. Oh, andmove the car into and out of thearenas, as I am not good at close-quar-ter maneuvering. He had lots of fungetting to know the other crews as hedrove our rental SUV to all the “servicepoints.”

In order to be eligible for a Competi-tion License, we decided to enroll in theTarga School put on by Glen Clarke andAndy Proudfoot of Open RoadMotorsports. They provided greatadvice on how to drive a rally and navi-gate through it. They were alsoavailable at every service stop, askinghow we were doing and whether theycould help. Glen’s most-true tidbit wasthat most rally teams get lost on transitstages and not during the rally stagesthemselves. It proved to be true. Luck-ily, we always made our start times, even though we covered some groundthat wasn’t specifically on the route.Brian Bourbonniere, an experiencednavigator, also helped us get the cali-bration down perfectly and gave Marthatips that helped us stay on course.

So much for Getting There. “InsideTarga” next month... oh, then there’sIgor, the hurricane bit...

‘Tis the season...forreflection on anothergreat year for PCAers.Of course we knowthat the economictimes aren’t whatthey were a few yearsago, but that hasn’t

stopped PCAers from figuring out howto have a good year. In spite of the“outsiders’” perception of the Porschebrand as one of extravagance, we knowthat, in truth, many of us are peoplewho have had to tighten the belt onmore than one occasion to reach andmaintain our dreams of driving a greatcar. It turns out that PCA is really quitean egalitarian club.

Let me illustrate. Last year I attendedthe Alpine Mountain Region Christmasparty in Colorado Springs on a Fridaynight in early January, then attendedthe Shelby American party just outsideof Boulder the very next night. If you’rea fan of 1950s, 60s, and 70s auto-rac-ing, you can’t not be a fan of the Shelbystory. Certainly the small museum inNiwot lives up to the reputation, withmany great Cobras, a Daytona, originalFord GTs, and an amazing array ofmemorabilia. They even had all the liv-ing members of the Shelby Team fromthe mid-60s there to tell stories andsign books and posters. Carroll was ill,but he called in to talk to everyone. Butwhat hit me was this: membership andbelonging. Certainly I’m an enthusiastof the Cobras and the Ford GTs, but Idoubt that I’ll ever be an owner of oneof the originals. To enter that worldmeans an expenditure of several hun-dred thousand dollars and more to storeand maintain it. It couldn’t be a dailydriver. As I wandered around themuseum looking at all the gems and

talking with theirowners, it occurredto me what a smallgroup that must be.Whereas the nightbefore, at the AMRPCA Christmasparty, I could sitnext to a multi-carowner of greatPorsche classics onone side (a sky-is-the-limitinvestment), and afirst owner of a 914or 944 on theother—and all withan equal appreciation and love for thebrand.

Though many people think ofPorsches as exotic, we know that manyof our members bought their firstPorsche 356s and early 911s inGermany while serving in the Army,Navy, Air Force, or Marines in the 50sand 60s, when they were quite accessi-ble to mere mortals—at least those withdiscerning taste and a passion for per-formance. Standing amongst the Shelbycollection, I realized that the world ofPorsche aficionados was one of theeveryman. Many of the Shelby ownersconfessed to owning a Shelby, but driv-ing a Porsche. Why? Because Porschesare built to be driveable. And, as weknow, most of us use our cars, and usethem and use them and use them. Forthe drive to work, for rallies, forconcours, for autocrosses and trackdays, and, and, and...

Since it is the holiday season, it’sworth noting that PCA members lovesharing their cars, too. PCA regionsacross the Zone and across the countryare known for raising large amounts of

money for charitable organizations withtheir efforts and their cars in rallies, concours, autocrosses, and more.PCAers are known for sharing their timeand energy with each other, whether itbe parts and expertise during a trackweekend break-down, regular mainte-nance, during a full restoration, andeven as competitors during concours.

PCAers, it turns out, are not thesnobby, me-centered Porsche-guy twitsdepicted in a lot of movies, but aredown-to-earth, hard-working, caring, and sharing individuals with a particularpassion for life, living and giving. As Iattend various PCA events throughoutthe year and during the holiday season,I’m always reminded that I did quitewell when I picked out my pre-ownedDiamond-Blue Metallic 964. Not only isit a fine vehicle that has brought melots of fun, it’s introduced me to one ofthe greatest groups of people I’ve everhad the privilege to work and play with.

Best to all of you during this holidayseason. I look forward to seeing you ata PCA event soon.

My UltimateHoliday WishList

So, what’s it goingto be on my HolidayWish List this year?

What do I need? Not a thing. What do Iwant? Well, that’s another question. Why not shoot the moon? An ultimateride would be a good place to start.

How about a Porsche Turbo?Fat chance. I spoke to Mark Barnett,

Sales Manager at Stevinson. He saideach Turbo they get in is pre-sold, longbefore they hit the dealership’s show-room floor. In fact, they never make itto the showroom floor. “I wouldn’t evenwant to put any demo miles on them.”Really?

“One came in last Tuesday at, and wekept tabs, 11:15 am. It was gone at 3pm. Gone.

“We’re getting one GT2 RS, and oneSpyder. They’re both pre-sold.”

How do people do this? Says Mark, they basically have a standing order. They say these magic words, “If you’regetting in a Turbo, call me.” And so theydo.

He took me back to the service bay, where they were prepping a Turbo SCab. $183k, give or take. “It’ll be gonein a few hours,” he said. It turns outthat, in order to prevent any damage intransit, the front air dam comes unat-tached. It wasn’t attached yet.

There was just one thing to do—goonline, of course. And, lo and behold, inmy e-mail was a missive from an outfitcalled “World Class Driving.” Hmm, Ithought, if I can’t buy an ultimate ride,at least I can drive one.

I read on. It turns out I could drive notjust one, but five. In one day. They mar-ket something called the “SupercarDriving Experience.” Five hours total, with 20 to 30 minutes behind the wheelof each car. The fleet that you switchbetween includes, in alpha-dog order,an Audi R8 V10, a Bentley ContinentalSupersports, a Ferrari 599 GTB, a FerrariF430, a Lamborghini LP560-4, a Lam-borghini Murciélago LP640, aLamborghini Superleggera and a Mer-cedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

And they’re coming to Beaver Creekand Denver next August, for two days.Yes!

But, no. No Porsche Turbo. And,besides, the price is $1,695 per driver. For the day. Is that a good deal? Itwouldn’t matter. With my luck, it wouldprobably rain... or snow.

But, wait, they had other offerings. The “Ferrari Track Experience.” For

$3,995 you get to drive around Monti-cello Motorsports Park, a private trackjust upstate from New York City, in anF360 Challenge car. But, no, again. It’sa long commute from Denver.

Then there’s the “200 MPHChallenge.” They say 104 people havebroken through, and they getcertificates to prove it.

To perform this feat, the companyuses one of two locations: MojaveSpaceport, which is a 14,000 ft. runway,50 mi. east of Los Angeles, surroundedapparently by high-tech black-projectaerospace companies, or Miami-DadeTraining and Transition Airport, 40 mi.west of Miami, which features an

11,500 ft. runway that’s an alternativefor the space shuttle. They didn’t sayexactly what you drive, but if it qualifiesfor the run, it probably doesn’t matter. The fee is $4995/driver.

Then it really gets interesting. “For-mula 1 Experience” interesting. That’sright, you can spend a day workingyour way into an F1 Arrows A18 andhot-lap around Monticello, all for $6,995per driver. And if that’s a bit too rich foryour blood, so to speak, there’s thehalf-day version, the “Formula 1 Discov-ery” program, where you work up tofour laps in the Arrows, for a muchmore reasonable $3,495.

No, I’d rather do something closer tohome.

What’s this? Spaceport America inNew Mexico? The final frontier? Nowwe’re talking!

I’ve linked here through the siteTeamspeed.com, which features WorldClass Driving as an advertiser. Andthey’re running down their own HolidayGuide. And, yes, after the watches, theZeppelin Mini iPod speakers, the water-proof TV, the ultimate sedan(Panamera!) and the ultimate toy (458Italia), there it is. Virgin Galactic, theFinal Frontier, and it’s “within yourgrasp.”

I don’t know about that, but it is aday’s drive away. It turns out the facilityis in Upham, NM, which Wikipediadescribes as “an uninhabited, unincor-porated town and place” east of Truthor Consequences and north of LasCruces. With a runway nearly two mileslong, and a terminal hangar facilitynearing completion. They show a photo.

The Web site gives you all the infor-mation you’ll need to join 380 or so“future astronauts” in, well, this just hasto define it, the one and only, the lastfrontier, the true ultimate ride. For amere $200k, please (with $20k now toreserve your seat). Didn’t I hear thatMichael Schumacher is signed up? Well, then, never mind a Turbo. Never mindan F1 ride. This is it. This is my list.

And, by the way, pleasant dreams...Happy holidays to all, and to all a veryhigh and mighty good night!

TourA tour is a non-competitive driving event inwhich participants follow a given route to a des-tination (which may or may not be known inadvance). A tour may vary in length from a daytrip to a long weekend with an overnight stay ortwo. Tours usually follow scenic routes (whichare plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interestingor obscure destinations. Tours are sometimescombined with rallies to add variety and a doseof competition to the event.

RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMRtypically offers several. A number of tours areusually offered at Porsche Parade as well.

RallyA rally is a competitive event in which contest-ants attempt to follow a course specified by aset of instructions. Rallies are typically run onpublic, paved roads, and speed limits are alwaysobserved. The two major types of rallies are theTime-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gim-mick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt tofollow the instructions precisely, maintaining thecorrect speed, as points are deducted for arriv-ing at checkpoints (the locations of which arenot known in advance) early or late. A Gimmickrally is typically a bit less rigid and usuallyinvolves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—atleast one of each type—are offered. PorscheParade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes aGimmick rally, each year.

Autocross (AX)An autocross is a competition in which driversnavigate their cars through a course defined byorange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Topspeeds are generally moderate, topping outaround 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gearfor many cars). Competing cars are spaced atlong intervals—typically only one or two carsare on the course at any time. Autocross is asafe way to experience high-performance driv-ing while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Together, RMR and AMR host several autocrossevents each year, including Eiskhana (essen-tially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and

an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.

Driver Education (DE)A driver education event provides a safe, con-trolled environment for high-performancedriving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skilllevels the opportunity to hone their drivingskills, with the help of an experienced instruc-tor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primaryemphasis at all times is on safety. A word ofwarning, though: the DE experience may behabit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation forracing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by atime trial event, which gives drivers a chance toquantify their performance. Lap times may thenbe used to measure personal improvement, forbragging rights, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High PlainsRaceway, with AMR hosting several more at theLa Junta, Pueblo, and (possibly in the future)Pikes Peak International Raceway tracks.

Club RaceA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. Arace weekend consists of a number of practicesessions and “heats” (race sessions), ofteninvolving both “sprint” and “endurance” races. As a Club Racing license (issued by PCANational) is required for competition, club racersare serious and experienced drivers. The carsthey bring with them to the track can be quiteimpressive! As a point of interest, the PCA ClubRacing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race atSecond Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event ofthis magnitude, a club race requires a legion ofvolunteers. However, a club race is also one ofmost exciting events to participate in, so besure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each year at HighPlains Raceway which, combined with the“Super DE” event, adds up to one thrilling week-end!

what we do

Membership SocialMembership socials provide an opportunity toreconnect with old friends and meet new mem-bers. Historically, a membership meeting beginswith a social hour with a cash bar, followed bythe evening’s program. The content of the pro-gram varies, sometimes featuring a “slideshow” from a recent event, or a guest speakersuch as accomplished Speed World Challengeracer Randy Pobst.

RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwisestated, are held the first Thursday of the month.Different venues and topics will keep the meet-ings fresh and inviting. Watch High Gear and theRMR Web site for details. And if you have anyideas for a program, talk to the Program Com-mittee Chair or a Board member!

Tech SessionA tech session is just what it sounds like—a ses-sion in which a technical topic is discussed. Notjust for gearheads, a tech session may demon-strate practical, “do-it-yourself” proceduressuch as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usu-ally presented by experienced Porsche

technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMRevents and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typi-cally in the “off months” when few drivingevents take place. In addition, numerous techsessions are offered at Porsche Parade.

Concours d’EleganceA concours is essentially a car show, in whichcontestants endeavor to present their cars in asclose to “perfect” condition as possible. A num-ber of judged categories usually exist, typicallydifferentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver”or “full preparation” or somewhere in between).Cars sometimes may be entered as “displayonly,” for owners who wish to participate butnot compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concoursevents each year, including the annual ExoticSports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, ben-efiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. Theannual Porsche Parade also hosts a major con-cours each year.
