Our Vision To celebrate the journey of learning by preparing students for their future through a caring, nurturing learning culture, where all students have the opportunity to achieve personal and academic success. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students I am pleased to say that we have had a very smooth start to 2017. I am happy to see all of our students back fit and healthy and enthusiastic about another year of learning. Calista Primary School continues to grow and our enrolment is now over 490 students. We welcomed over 40 new families to the school. We currently have 22 classes from Kindy to year 6. Room 4 is temporarily located in the Art room as we wait for the completion of the new classroom. We welcomed five new staff members to Calista this year. Ms Lisa Coon is teaching year 6 in room 1, Mr Adam Jolly has year 5 in room 3, Mrs Sarah Stevens has year 3 in room 8, Mrs Marcia Skinner has year 2 in room 13 and Mrs Alissa De Souza is our Performing Arts Teacher. The new staff have settled in very well to Calista and we look forward to their contribution to our school in 2017. During the first few weeks of the term teachers will be holding parent information sessions. I shall try to attend these meetings but unfortunately I will not be able to attend every meeting. I would like to extend my invitation to all parents to see me should they have any questions, concerns or information that impacts on their child‟s learning or wel l-being. I am usually available to meet with parents without an appointment. At the parent meetings teachers will stress the importance of home reading. It is recommended that all children read aloud to an adult each week. Younger students should do this at least 4 times per week and older students reading to someone once per week and silently to themselves on other nights. Kindy and Pre-primary students should be read to by an adult with discussions about the book and the story. Learning times-tables is also a homework task that parents can help their children with. We continue to make improvements around the school. The cover over the bike rack was finished over the holidays and shade sails have been installed in the Kindergarten. We are still working on improving the play areas in Kindy and around the quadrangle. Calista Primary has an excellent record for student attendance. Attendance is compulsory, even for kindergarten students. We know that when students are absent from school it can significantly impact on their learning and affect their ability to make and maintain friendships. In accordance with the Department of Education‟s guidelines for attendance I would like any parent that wishes to take a vacation during term time to make an appointment to see me to discuss the impact that the absence may have on their child. All students start the year with their „Good Standing‟. If they maintain their Good Standing throughout the term they are ab le to participate in class and whole school rewards. At the end of last year, over 80 students achieved Advanced Good Standing and this was recognised at last week‟s student assembly. Advanced Good Standing is about student attitude, behaviour and attendance so all students should be able to get Advanced Good Standing. Students that missed out this time can work towards getting Advanced Good Standing by focusing on having excellent attitude and behaviour every day. This year Calista Primary School starts a new three year Business Plan. For this time we have decided on a set of values important to our school community. The four values are Respect, Perseverance, Resilience and Compassion. These values will become integrated into everything that we do. I am looking forward to working with students, parents and staff and wish everyone all the best for a productive year ahead. This week‟s assembly will be presented by Rooms 5 and 6. Please feel free to join us for a brief morning tea in the Child and Pare nt Centre afterwards. Bunuru - Second summer (season of the adolescence) February - March

Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Hot easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons if you're close to the coast. Therefore, traditionally this was, and still is, a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and seafood made up major parts of the diet during this time of year.

Bunuru is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums.

Another striking flower that is hard to go past is the female Zamia (Macrozamia riedlei). Being much larger than that of its male counterpart, the huge cones emerge from the centre of the plant with masses of a cotton wool like substance.

As the hot, dry weather continues the seed upon the cones change from green to bright red, indicating they're ripening and becoming more attractive to animals, particularly the emu, that will eat the toxic fleshy outer.

On the 16th of September last year four of our students were invited to a special writer‟s workshop at the Art Gallery of WA. They were able to spend time with a published author who explored the art with them giving them writing tips and ideas. The author‟s then helped the students‟ to write their own piece. Each student was able to create a piece of writing which was then compiled into a booklet. Below is the piece completed by Jai Herbert. Look out in the next few newsletters for more great pieces of writing. It was great day and the students represented Calista wonderfully.

BRITISH MODERN

By Jai Herbert Mentor Author: Geoff Havell

My foot tapping, my mind buzzing, today was the big day, the day we had practice for. Finally we heard the call, “Couple Number 52!” We step onto the dance floor. The adrenalin pumps through me. The lights shine on us and a million hands start clapping. The music starts playing and I remember the pattern: “12312343”. We begin. I swing her around. We have only just started and I‟m already sweating, I feel the beads of sweat drip down my neck. We hold each other tightly while trying to maintain balance. We plaster on our fake smiles while we dance. We are mid-way through and then we change our pattern: “42421212”. We spin and start our finale piece. She whirls out and then runs towards me. I lift her high above my head into the air just as the music finishes. We did it! A million hands start clapping again, a lot louder this time and we hear the cries of “Well Done!” I put her down and we bow, walking off the stage. We wait with anticipation for the announcement of the winner. “And the winner is…couple number 52, Craig Swift and Melody Perich!” We run onto the stage and

bow again, for we have won the competition!
