Following a debut win with a victory in the state-bred

Generous Portion S. during her brief juvenile campaign, Miss

Sunset won the Sweet Life S. Feb. 12 in her first try on turf.

Failing to find the winner=s circle in her next two outings, the

sophomore captured the grassy Campanile S. going a mile at

Golden Gate against Cal-breds Apr. 30 and was second in the

state-bred Melair S. going 1 1/16 miles on the Santa Anita main

track May 29. A dominant winner of the Fleet Treat S. sprinting

at Del Mar against fellow California-breds July 30, she entered

this test off a win in the restricted CERF S., another dirt sprint at

the seaside oval, Sept. 4. Cont. p4

Pedigree Notes:

Miss Sunset=s dam Tuscan Sunset won three of seven starts

and was claimed out of her final start, a win at Los Alamitos in

April 2010 by Stanley Lee Howard for just $2,000. She produced

her first foal in 2012 and was later sold for $36,000 with the

Raven Run winner in utero at the 2013 Keeneland November

sale. Her 2015 foal by Smiling Tiger passed away, but she

produced a filly by that stallion in 2016 and a colt by the same

sire May 7 of this year. Miss Sunset hails from the family of

MGSW multimillionaire Prayer for Relief (Jump Start). Her sire

Into Mischief is currently the leading sire of 3-year-olds in North

America this year with 20 black-type horses and 11 black-type

winners headlined by MGISW and GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile

contender Practical Joke.

HAVE YOU TAKEN THE BREEDERS= CUP

AFTERCARE PLEDGE? By T.D. Thornton

Effective equine-care

fundraisers have three things in

common: 1) Ease of donor

participation; 2) A donation

model in which 100% of the

proceeds benefits the charity; 3)

A shared, excitement-based

communal rooting interest

among all participants.

New Vocations, the nation=s

largest rehabilitation and

placement program for retired

racehorses, clearly has that

trifecta covered.

Now it=s up to owners and

trainers who have horses aiming

for the world championship

races at Del Mar Nov. 3 and 4 to step up and accept the ninth

annual Breeders= Cup pledge.

Here=s how it works: Owners and trainers of Breeders= Cup

entrants voluntarily pledge in advance to donate a portion of

the purse earnings of their

horse(s) to New Vocations.

Donors declare the amount as a

percentage point of their own

choosing, generally from

one-half of 1% to 10%. This

strategy in past pledge drives

has netted New Vocations

anywhere from $40,000 to

$120,000 during the course of

each year=s two-day Breeders=

Cup event.

AIt=s my favorite fundraiser

because 100% of the proceeds

go to the New Vocations

program,@ said Anna Ford, the

Thoroughbred program director

for New Vocations. AThere=s no overhead to it, because there=s

no big event that we have to put on. The Breeders= Cup puts on

the event. We get the pledges and the commitments, and then

we just sit back and see how the horses do--they=re the show.@

Last year=s windfall might be difficult to top, but that won=t

stop Ford and her team of volunteers from trying: The 2016

Breeders= Cup resulted in two winning horses whose owners had

taken the New Vocations pledge.

ANormally, we=re lucky if we get one winner, but last year was

a really exciting year, with Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile)

pledged by owners John and Debby Oxley and Tourist (Tiznow)

pledged by owners WinStar Farm, Wachtel Stable, and Gary

Barber,@ Ford said. AWe always hope that we=re going to have

winners, but we have had years where we don=t and are

fortunate just to have some horses hit the board. But it really

makes a difference to us when they do win, so that was huge.@

The New Vocations donations are tax-deductible, Ford noted.

The online pledge page is here.

AWe=re just starting to talk to people, those who=ve pledged in

the past, while also reaching out to new people to educate them

about what the pledge is about,@ said Ford. AAs you know, in

horse racing people can be a little superstitious, not wanting to

commit to the pledge until they know they=re in the race. They

sometimes like to pre-enter first, and once the pre-entries are in

then we see a flurry of activity.@

New Vocations was founded in 1992 by Ford=s mother, Dot

Morgan, as both a kindness to retiring Thoroughbreds and

Standardbreds and as a convenience for those industries, which

at that point had no established national placement

organizations to assist with re-homing and retraining.

New Vocations has since blossomed into a network of

multi-state stabling and retraining centers in Lexington,

Kentucky; Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, and in both Laurelville

Page 11: CALIFORNIA FILLIES FINISH ONE-TWO IN RAVEN RUN

New Vocations grad Not Given Up | New Vocations

and Marysville, Ohio. A new location, in Ballston Spa, New York,

(not too far from Saratoga Race Course) just opened last year.

Ford said New Vocations can house a maximum of 140 retired

Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds at a time. About 90% of

horses are able to be re-homed as Ariding sound,@ she said, most

within 60 days of being retrained.

AWhen we started New Vocations, the word >aftercare= didn=t

even exist in the industry,@ Ford said. AIt=s only been in the last

five to seven years where the industry has really taken a turn

and focused on the importance of aftercare. Owners and

trainers are also realizing more about their responsibility to

make sure that when their horses are retired, they get into the

right situation.

AThere=s definitely been a huge raise in the awareness that

everyone does need to do their part. It was a slow process up to

about 10 years ago, but the last 10 years we=ve seen great

change in the right direction. So the need [for accredited

aftercare facilities] is definitely rising because more people want

to make sure their horses are placed in a proper organization

where they know that the horses are going to be transitioned

properly [into post-racing careers].@

When a horse is accepted into New Vocations, Ford said the

first step is a thorough physical evaluation, which leads to a plan

for rehab. The rehab phase can last anywhere from 30 days up

to a year before horses move over to the training side of the

barn, where they learn second-career basics like

walk/trot/canter, and, if able, small jumps to test for potential

sport horse ability.

Prospective adoptive owners must pass an extensive

application and background check that screens for

horsemanship experience and the financial ability to care

long-term for a retired racer. New Vocations follows re-homed

horses closely, requiring updates from new owners, which are

then passed along to the previous owners who donated the

horses into the program.

ASince we=ve expanded with our Lexington facility, which

we=ve been doing over the past two years, we=ve actually

increased our intake, and we are on track to take in over 500

horses this year, and our adoptions will be close to 400 this

year,@ Ford said.

Ford underscored that one generous (and sporting) aspect

about a number of the owners and trainers who pledge

donations is that even if their horses don=t bring home

substantial purse earnings in a Breeders= Cup race, some of

them still honor the pledge anyway.

AIf they don=t win or hit the board, they don=t have to send a

pledge,@ Ford said. ABut we=ve had people still follow through

and send us a check even when their horse doesn=t run well

enough to hit the board.@

MR. HOT STUFF RULES GRAND NATIONALby Don Clippinger

The $400,000 G1 Grand National, America's richest

steeplechase race, took shape Saturday as a contest between

America's best and three overseas invaders, two from England

and one from Ireland. On this day, America rules.

At the finish, three of the four American competitors were

inches apart, and the winner with a valiant last effort was Gillian

Johnston's Mr. Hot Stuff (Tiznow), a Triple Crown contestant in

2009 whose last previous Grade 1 win was in 2013 and his last

prior win was in 2015.

The invaders for the Far Hills Races' signature race never took

a serious role on a warm, glowing afternoon in central New

Jersey. When the flag dropped, Mr. Hot Stuff went to the lead

under Irish jockey Danny Mullins, and he alternated on the lead

for more than two miles with Buttonwood Farm's All the Way

Jose (Senor Swinger), who had gone all the way in Belmont

Park's G1 Lonesome Glory H. exactly a month earlier.

Mr. Hot Stuff always has had the stuff to be in the game,

including a third in the 2009 GI Santa Anita Derby before he was

acquired for jump racing. But expectations were that he would

run out of run in the stretch. Mr. Hot Stuff, at age 11, was

determined to prove that he still was hot stuff.

For a few strides, it looked as though Modem (GB) (Motivator

{GB}) would blow past in the stretch and finally put to rest

recent memories that he had finished second in all three of his

prior U.S. starts for owner Robert Kinsley and Maryland-based

trainer Elizabeth Voss.

But both All the Way Jose and Mr. Hot Stuff were going well

and refused to surrender. With Modem, they flew the last fence

together. A few strides out from the finish line, All the Way Jose

wavered ever so slightly under leading jockey Darren Nagle, and

Modem took over under Jack Doyle.

But Mullins kept working on Mr. Hot Stuff, who kept moving

forward and refused to concede defeat. In the shadow of the

wire, he found just enough to get past Modem and win by a

nose. All the Way Jose finished third, another nose farther back.

On an afternoon that recalled late summer more than

mid-autumn, Mr. Hot Stuff rekindled tangible memories of his

previous glory days, when he won the 2013 G1 A. P. Smithwick

Memorial.

The Smithwick Memorial offered promise that Mr. Hot Stuff

had finally mastered the jumping sport, but he missed the 2014

season, came back to run well in 2015, and then missed all of

last year. He started this year well, sputtered into the summer,

and was fifth behind All the Way Jose in the Lonesome Glory.

The win, worth $240,000, raised Mr. Hot Stuff's 2017 tally to

$251,100 and all but assured him the 2017 Lonesome Glory

Award as the National Steeplechase Association's leading

earner. He also will be a factor in the Eclipse Award voting after

the Grand National, the year's final Grade 1 race over fences.

The win also was highly significant for his trainer, Jack Fisher,

who had a win and a second in previous races. Those results and

the Grand National raised his 2017 earnings to $1,182,050, a

National Steeplechase Association record.

Fisher had held the earnings record, set in 2008 at $1,156,907.

He has exceeded the million-dollar mark two other times, in

2015 and 2016, and is the only trainer to break into seven

figures.

Twisted Tom led home a 1-2-3 finish for sophomores while

earning his third-straight stakes success since returning to state-

bred company. Hard held early but tugging his way up to trade

jabs with Control Group from the two path, the chestnut

seemed to be going better of the two after six panels in 1:12.37.

Control Group hung tough to midstretch, but Twisted Tom had

too much late and pulled clear in the final sixteenth.

AHe's the kind of horse where you can put him wherever you

want, he's very straightforward,@ said rider Javier Castellano.

AHe went easy and comfortable today. He picked it up at the

end. We had a lucky trip and we had the opportunity to get it

done.@

Twisted Tom capped a previous three-race winning skein in

Laurel=s Federico Tesio S. Apr. 22, after which Cobra Farm sold a

part interest in him and he was supplemented for the GI

Belmont S. A distant sixth that day, the gelding has been in

career form since dropping down a bit in class. He annexed the

New York Derby at Finger Lakes July 22, and was a comfortable

winner of the Albany S. at Saratoga Aug. 25.

AMy initial plan was to rest him at this point,@ trainer Chad

Brown said of future plans. AHe has had a long hard campaign,

started off his winter here, and sooner or later you have to give

him a break. But I will discuss that with the ownership group and

go from there. And in the weeks to come we will make a final

decision.@

GIII Pilgrim S. Sept. 30. Racing well of the pace through

contested fractions of :23.07 and :45.77 in this one, he began to

wind up on the far turn and kicked home nicely in the stretch to

nail Big Gemmy on the wire. "He's always worked very well on

the dirt,@ winning trainer Michael Dilger said. AWe went to the

turf looking for the distance. We thought that was going to be

the most important factor for the horse at the time during the

summer, then he ran so well. But he's always worked well on

Berning Rose | Adam Coglianese

Berning Rose took her seven-panel Saratoga unveiling by five

lengths Aug. 30, but settled for second behind Held Accountable

in this venue=s Joseph A. Gimma S. Sept. 20. Fastest from the

gate, but taken in hand and kept out wide, the homebred

settled in fourth into the turn perched four deep. She began to

ratchet up the pressure midway along the bend and put a head

in front before they hit the quarter pole. Held Accountable came

with a big run in the lane, but Berning Rose=s edge proved

insurmountable as that pair reported home far in front of the

rest of the field. AThe more we can get her to settle, the more

[she will improve],@ offered trainer Dominick Schettino. AShe

was a little close up front today, but that is her running style.

She has a natural speed, but I think she will go a little longer as

she learns to settle and relax... When she broke sharp, I figured

Kendrick [Carmouche] could get her to settle. She is easy like

that. She is not a hard horse, she is not a run-off type. She is

easy to relax once you take a hold of her, but she was ready for

the race today." The winner has a yearling half-sister by Alpha

fend off 41-1 shot Might Be. The winner=s dam=s only career

victory came at 75-1 in the 2008 Maid of the Mist S., also run on

favorite. "It really set up well for her,@ winning trainer Chad

Brown said. AWe were trying to revert back to tactics that

we tried to get too much early position, and she's better making

competition around the bend, she came alive nearing the

Limited View was a convincing and well-backed debut winner

here June 17, but was scratched out of Saratoga=s GIII

Schuylerville S. after acting up in the paddock and subsequently

finished a distant sixth in that venue=s GII Adirondack S. Aug. 12.

CRACKSMAN CRUSHESCHAMPION FOES

Fittingly staged against the backdrop of AStorm Brian,@

Saturday=s G1 Qipco Champion S. at Ascot witnessed its own

equine tempest as Anthony Oppenheimer=s Cracksman (GB)

(Frankel {GB}) lorded it over some class rivals to make his much-

loved sire=s first European Group 1 a special affair. In the race

that not only capped the golden campaign of Frankel but which

also played host to the greatest moment in the career of his

brother Noble Mission (GB), the family momentum well and

truly carried over to the homebred from Hascombe and Valiant

Studs. Backed into 13-8 favouritism despite lacking a top-level

success, the bay was always comfortable just off the pace and

when sent forward into the lead by Frankie Dettori turning for

home responded in his sire=s formidable and generous-galloping

style to open up. Alone and exposed in the gusts up the middle

of Ascot=s expanse, Cracksman was as professional as he was

remorseless and by the time he pounded past the line he had

stretched his advantage over the Irish Champion runner-up

Poet=s Word (Ire) (Poet=s Voice {GB}) to a commanding seven

lengths, with Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) upholding the

standard in third. AHe=s a very talented horse and Frankie rode

him positively and beautifully in the straight,@ John Gosden said

of the colt who at last showed the brilliance that had long had

connections dreaming of 2018.

AEnable and him will be fun. You can now see why I didn=t

want him to run in the Arc, as there=s not much between them.

This is great for Frankel, it=s his first Group 1 winner in Europe in

the race he won himself.@

Introduced in the same Newmarket mile maiden as his

stablemate Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) almost exactly

a year before this crowning moment, Cracksman served instant

notice that he was one to be kept in mind for the following

year=s Derby and his road to the blue riband aptly began at

Epsom six months later. Getting up late despite a slow start and

trouble in running to deny the high-class and ill-fated Permian

(Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) by a short head in the 10-furlong Investec

Derby Trial on Apr. 26, he faced a crucial crossroads as York=s

G2 Dante S. neared but was taken out of the rain-hit trial which

ultimately franked his quality after Permian ran out a ready

winner.

Cracksman Crushes Champion Foes cont. from p1

While the easy conditions were the key factor in that decision,

his owner-breeder was keen to stress that the dam had relished

testing ground and it was more a matter of timing with Gosden

keen to avoid a slog just over two weeks before the main event.

As a result, Cracksman went to the June 3 G1 Epsom Derby

possessing all the qualities required but lacking essential

conditioning and that told as he came off the bridle early in the

straight before staying on to be a length behind the more

streetwise Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) and Cliffs of

Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). It was the same story again at The

Curragh four weeks later as the bay came under the pump from

Pat Smullen before the straight and galloped on resolutely to be

narrowly denied by Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Following a seven-

week chrysalis period, Cracksman re-emerged on good-to-soft

ground in York=s G2 Great Voltigeur on Aug. 23 and it was as

though the real Frankel element had begun to come through as

he put up an unforgettable display. It is well-documented that

Oppenheimer and Gosden had planned to stop at that point and

craft a real 4-year-old program for him, but leaving him alone

was becoming increasingly difficult as he continued to grow in

stature.

After his easy success in the G2 Prix Niel at Chantilly on Sept.

10, he would undoubtedly have gone back there for the big

French autumn test had Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) not had

first dibs on that prize and so Ascot became the main focus.

While Oppenheimer continued to pour cold water on

suggestions he might after all be engaged in a major race before

the season=s end, Gosden was plotting the route to the

Champion S. and every day that Cracksman stepped out on to

the Newmarket gallops he further enhanced his prospects of

being here. In confident mood and well aware of what he had in

store, Gosden had committed to running as early as the

Tattersalls October Part 1 Sale, when the going was still an

unknown quantity and his foresight was rewarded by more

British downpours which would compromise the fast-ground

contingent.

Breaking alertly, Cracksman raced in the slipstream of

stablemate Maverick Wave (Elusive Quality) as they raced third

and fourth with Highland Reel taken wide by Ryan Moore in

search of better ground before halfway. Habitual front-runner

Success Days (Ire) (Jeremy) took no prisoners and it was clear by

the end of the back straight as Highland Reel crossed back over

to re-join the pack that only slow-ground specialists need apply.

Sent between Maverick Wave and Success Days and into the

front with three furlongs remaining, he lowered his head in his

sire=s inimitable style and drew away to settle the result fairly

quickly, with the French challenger and surprise package

Recoletos (Fr) (Whipper) looking for a while likely to come off

second best. As Cracksman ground out his wide-margin success

in the kind of glorious isolation Frankel made his trademark, it

was left to Poet=s Word and Highland Reel to provide ballast to

the form at a respectable distance. Cont. p3

Qipco British Champion S. cont.

Frankie Dettori, who will face one of the greatest dilemmas of

a jockey in the modern era when the Gosden stable goliaths

eventually clash, was remarkably registering a belated first

Champion success and he said, AThat was amazing. He put a

good field to bed in the manner of a champion. It was a fantastic

feeling and I=ve not got words to describe it. We=ve given him

time to develop and that=s what you=ve got now. He=s been

working so sweetly and he got the success that he deserved. If I

had to choose between him and Enable, I wouldn=t know who to

ride, they are two champions and we go into the winter to

dream. He=s learning and there=s so much more to come from

him.@

Gosden added, AIf he was a middleweight earlier in the season,

he is a light heavyweight now. He=s really progressed and to do

this against older horses, he=s a fast-improving horse. We hope

the horses have a good winter and go through to next year, but

I=ve been around long enough not to count too many chickens. I

thought he=d win the race extremely well if things went right for

him, but a mile and a quarter here and you have to handle the

ground--I=ll be absolutely honest, I didn=t think he=d win as big as

that.@

Sir Michael Stoute was probably relieved he opted to take out

Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) with the storm bringing more rain,

but was satisfied that Poet=s Word had earned another second

in a Champion S. AHe=s run well. He=s pretty versatile

ground-wise and trip-wise, but I don=t think he wants the ground

as bad as this,@ he said. AI=m very pleased with him and he=s

been beaten by a very good one today.@ Highland Reel ran a

creditable race after taking the long way round and may

ultimately have put up an ideal prep for his Breeders= Cup Turf

defence. AI=m very happy and he ran a great race,@ Aidan O=Brien

commented. AHe=d like the ground quicker and he=ll probably go

to America next if everything is well.@

Pedigree Notes... Cracksman is now without doubt the best of his sire=s first crop

and like his dam Rhadegunda (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) is getting better

with each racecourse experience. Responsible for the G3 Solario

S. scorer Fantastic Moon (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who was her

first foal, she was also a lover of testing conditions as she proved

when registering her sole black-type success in the Listed Prix

Solitude on her final start. The third dam is the 1000 Guineas

and Sussex S. heroine On the House, whose descendants include

the G2 Royal Lodge S. winner Leo (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and who is

related to the recently-deceased 1997 G1 Coronation S. winner

WINNING THE ARGUMENT At the end of a year in which Europe=s fillies and mares

marched onward towards world domination, Cheveley Park

Stud=s Persuasive (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) beat up some notable

colts to provide her esteemed owners David and Patricia

Thompson with another

red-letter day in the G1 Queen

Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on

Saturday. Well-supported into

8-1 coming off a second to Roly

Poly (War Front) in what was

thought to be her swansong in

Newmarket=s G1 Sun Chariot S.

a fortnight previously, the grey

raced off the pace under

Frankie Dettori and was

delivered with a rattle to brush

aside the 2-1 favourite

Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB})

and win by a length, with a half

length back to Churchill (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}) in third. AShe travelled so good I couldn=t believe

it, but this ground is so key for her,@ commented the rider who

was gaining a sixth success in the race that first launched him in

1990. AI thought the race was going to be very tough, but she

showed an explosive turn of foot and she put it to bed very

quickly.@

Like Librisa Breeze (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}), Persuasive has

been seen to be a touch unlucky on occasion since her dominant

display when breaking her black-

type maiden in the Listed

Sandringham H. over this track

and trip at the Royal meeting last

June. Following up with a three-

length defeat of the classy Blond

Me (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) in

Sandown=s G3 Atalanta Fillies= S.

in August, she was runner-up to

Alice Springs (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in

Leopardstown=s G1 Matron S. in

September and was racing for the

first time subsequently when a

staying-on fifth in the G1 Prix

Rothschild at Deauville on July 30.

Finishing with relish again when

third to Hydrangea (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}) in a Matron that was to have special resonance at this

meeting back at Leopardstown on Sept. 9, she was supposed to

Chris Richardson and Frankie Dettori

with Persuasive | racingfotos.com

be signing off when second in the Sun Chariot but her

demeanour and work in the interim had prompted connections

to have another go.

Restrained in the main far-side group early led along by the

Ballydoyle pace-setters Lancaster Bomber (War Front) and Sir

John Lavery (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Persuasive kept Churchill for

company and she tracked him closely as the smooth-travelling

Ribchester was committed on the front end by William Buick

passing three out. As Churchill went up the rail under Ryan

Moore, the gap was closed ahead of her and she had to switch

out with a quarter mile remaining. Rather than disturbing her

momentum, that move seemed to fire her up and she was soon

threatening a line of four rivals in Churchill, Ribchester,

stablemate Nathra (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB})--who had been third in the

Sun Chariot--and Lightning Spear (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Proving

fastest of that combination from the furlong pole, she surged

into the clear to add to Dettori=s QEII tally as he closes in on

Willie Carson=s record of eight.

Trainer John Gosden AHe was saving her and holding her

together and she=d have been an unlucky loser,@ he said.

ANathra also ran a blinder and they are both off to the breeding

shed now.@ Expanding on his decision to tackle this ambitious

target, he explained, AI think [Cheveley Park Stud=s managing

director] Chris [Richardson] said >she is in the QEII and if it rains,

should we run?= and I said >it is a very good idea=. It was as

simple as that. She is a phenomenally good filly. We=ve waited

for this ground, she loves this ground. I don=t think she has had

any luck in Group 1s. Things have gone wrong for her, but it has

come right today. We are thrilled and she deserved it. It never

worries me late in a year with a filly, because I think they go

through hell in the spring and summer coming in and out of

season. They come to the late summer and autumn and

everything is settled and they can focus on racing.@

As he was at Glorious Goodwood, trainer Richard Fahey was

again cursing the weather as he reflected on Ribchester=s effort.

AIt=s deja vu, the ground has beaten him again,@ he commented.

AHe=s a horse that=s won on soft ground, but he=s such a good-

moving horse. William [Buick] felt he came there to win and win

well and he just gets blunted in the dead ground. He just doesn=t

put it to bed and the winner coped with the conditions better.

That=s twice he=s been beaten in desperate conditions, but we=re

happy enough--I=m not really, but I=ll have to say that.@

Ribchester, who had been second to another filly in Minding

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 12 months previously, was being touted as a

Breeders= Cup Mile candidate beforehand, but Fahey was non-

committal in this race=s immediate aftermath. AI can=t even think

about that at the moment,@ he added.

I=m proud of him, but disappointed really. For me his best run of

the season was Royal Ascot when the ground was quick and he

broke the track record. If he hadn=t have won the Mill Reef on

slow ground I=d have always been worried about the ground

Happy connections of Hydrangea after she gave Aidan O'Brien a record-equaling 25th Group 1 winner of the year in the G1 Fillies and Mares S.

racingfotos.com

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS Hydrangea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was rewarded for her

consistency with a career high in last month=s G1 Matron S. at

Leopardstown before just failing to usurp stablemate

Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in Chantilly=s G1 Prix de

l=Opera on Arc day at the beginning of this month, but bounced

back in game fashion to provide Aidan O=Brien with a record-

equalling 25th Group 1 win of the year in Saturday=s G1 British

Champions Fillies & Mares S. at Ascot. Settling into a smooth

rhythm without cover for most of the contest, the 4-1 chance

made rapid headway rounding the home turn to seize control at

the quarter-mile marker and, despite the ominous attention of

7-4 favourite Bateel (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) approaching the final

furlong, readily withstood that rival=s vain bid to hit the line with

a decisive two lengths to spare. >TDN Rising Star= Coronet (GB)

(Dubawi {Ire}), as ever, rallied late to finish a further 1 3/4

lengths adrift in third. AEveryone puts in a lot of hard work, day

in day out, and it=s incredible,@ said a typically modest O=Brien

after matching the late Bobby Frankel=s 2003 landmark feat of

25 top-level wins in a calendar year. AWe=re a small link in a long

chain and we are so grateful and delighted for everybody

involved.

Galileos just do not stop, they go any distance from short to

long and the will to win is just incredible.@ Winning rider Ryan

Moore added, AWhat Aidan has achieved this year is simply

remarkable and it=s a massive team effort. This filly has been on

the go all year and just gets better and better. She has stepped

up in trip in her last two runs and I was hoping the ground would

have been better than it was, but she has a lovely attitude.@

Hydrangea, who graduated in a seven-furlong Curragh maiden

in her third start last year, embarked on a run of three runner-

up finishes--in the G2 Debutante S., G1 Moyglare Stud S. and

G1 Fillies= Mile--before closing a busy juvenile campaign with a

last-of-14 effort in Santa Anita=s GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies

Turf. She opened this term with a win in Leopardstown=s

G1 1000 Guineas and was in the money in the Irish equivalent,

Royal Ascot=s G1 Coronation S. and the G1 Nassau S. at

Goodwood. On song in the Sept. 9 G1 Matron S. on her return to

Leopardstown, she was back up in trip for Chantilly=s G1 Prix de

l=Opera and climbed the ladder once more for her first start

beyond 10 furlongs here. AThese Group 1s are so hard to win

and you never expect anything,@ insisted Aidan O=Brien, who

was crowned Britain=s champion trainer in the aftermath of

another day=s prize collecting. AIt was Ryan=s idea to run her as

he thought there was a chance she could get this trip. We

weren=t sure, but she obviously did and it is brilliant. We do our

best every single day and that=s all we can do. It=s great to be

here and I am so grateful to everybody. There are so many

variables and so many things which can go wrong. When you

miss at it you never know whether you are ever going to get

back there or not. That=s the way it is and the way things stack

up. Sometimes all your ducks come in a row and sometimes they

don=t, but you just have to accept it and move on.@

Runner-up Bateel (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})--who had previously

registered incremental scores in the June 10 G3 Pinnacle S., Aug.

6 G2 Prix de Pomone and Sept. 10 G1 Prix Vermeille--looked a

viable threat inside the final quarter mile, but was unable to

follow through once Hydrangea engaged turbo in the closing

stages. Trainer Francis-Henri Graffard was nonetheless delighted

with his charge and said, ABateel has run a fantastic race. She

had the ground she likes, she had a perfect run and there are no

excuses. She came upsides Hydrangea, but when Ryan [Moore]

asked his filly she ran away from us. She was on top of her game

for the Vermeille and was at her best today. There wouldn=t be

much more improvement in her, but she is a genuine Group 1

filly. She has done a fantastic job this season and deserves a

place at stud. She will go for a break now and we will chat with

the owners regarding her future. I=d be happy to have her back

and also happy for her to go stud. Every eventuality is a good

outcome.@ Jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot added, ABateel has run

a great race, but when she came upsides Hydrangea went away

and was not for catching. She has run really well, but came up

against a good one.@ James Wigan, racing manager for owner

Prince Faisal=s Denford Stud, confirmed Coronet (GB) (Dubawi

{Ire}) is to remain in training as a 4-year-old and said, AWe are

thrilled with her performance and she stays in training for next

season.@

Pedigree Notes... Hydrangea is the second Group 1 winner for G2 Prix du Gros-

Chene and G3 Prix d=Arenberg victress Beauty Is Truth (Ire)

FEELING THE BREEZE So often out of luck with his hold-up style, Tony Bloom=s

Librisa Breeze (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}) came right where it

mattered on Saturday as he swooped to conquer in the G1

Qipco British Champions Sprint at Ascot. While mostly everyone

was watching the likes of Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})

and Caravaggio (Scat Daddy), trainer Dean Ivory and all those

who kept the faith after a few unfortunate runs had their eyes

trained on their beloved grey as he sliced his way between

rivals from rear. Rushing by Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) with

150 yards to race, the 10-1 shot, who was last seen finishing

second in the G2 Hungerford S. over seven furlongs at Newbury

on Aug. 19, asserted to score by 1 1/4 lengths, with 3/4 of a

length back to Caravaggio as he worked his way past the fading

5-4 favourite Harry Angel. Robert Winston, whose last win at

this level had come in 2004, was making no bones about the

impact that the winner had made on his life. AMy career was

finished but for this horse,@ he

explained. AI gave my notice to

Dean last season, but this horse

kept me going. I=m riding for a

great man and great staff with

great owners and Dean=s got

some very nice horses now.

This horse is so genuine and

very fast, even though he=s

bred to stay further. He=s such

a trier and although I=ve been

criticised a couple of times with

people saying I should have

won, that=s the way you have

to ride him. It doesn=t matter now after this.@

Librisa Breeze has been popular at this track, at which his

record stood at two-from-five prior to this test, finishing second

in the Royal meeting=s Royal Hunt Cup last June before taking

the seven-furlong International S. and Challenge Cup in July and

early October. Sixth in this as he signed off his 2016 campaign,

he returned to be a strong-closing fourth after meeting trouble

in running in the June 24 G1 Diamond Jubilee S. in which The

Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), Tasleet and Limato (Ire) (Tagula

{Ire}) were ahead. His ninth placing in the Aug. 1 G2 Lennox S.

over seven furlongs at Goodwood told nothing of the tale of his

race, as he was repeatedly stopped and again failed to get a

clear passage as he filled the runner-up spot behind Massaat

(Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the Hungerford.

This race was immediately characterised by the decision byAdam Kirby to restrain Harry Angel and wait behind the frontpair, but the G1 July Cup and G1 Haydock Sprint Cup clearlyresented that tactic and by the time he was committed with

two furlongs remaining much of his customary power hadalready been spent. That opened the contest up and for a briefperiod it looked as if Ryan Moore had Caravaggio perfectlypoised for his usual strong finishing effort on the outside, but hecould only flounder in the ground when fully stretched. It wasTasleet who emerged with the most significant challenge to thefavourite approaching the furlong pole, but Librisa Breeze, whohad travelled strongly while balled up off the pace by RobertWinston, quickly loomed between Harry Angel and Caravaggio tojoin the fight. As Harry Angel began to cave in, it was the greywho proved strongest and saw off the Shadwell runner with allthe zest of one who has been frustrated for so long. Dean Ivory was basking in the career-defining moment. ATheground and everything went right for us,@ he said. AHe has beenoff a long time, seven weeks, and he has been so unlucky thisyear--we have got the luck when it mattered. That was thehardest field in the last 10 years and to come out and do it likethat, I=m thrilled. We have had a bit of a rocky road. You

persevere and hope for a bit ofluck and it has come good today. He is a horse that has never had aclean run. This year is his year andI=ve seen him grow into a properhorse. At one time I thought hehad gone back a bit, but he gotthe gap this time. He is versatileand you can=t say he isn=t asix-furlong horse. You train himwhere the races are as really, he isa seven-furlong horse or miler.@ William Haggas said of Tasleet, who again proved his liking for

testing ground, AHe=s run another great race and I=d say he justgot outstayed this time. I very much hope he=ll be back for nextyear, but that=s to be discussed. If he is, he=ll follow the sameroute as this year.@ Clive Cox said of Harry Angel, AIt wasn=t hisday, but I still think he showed his usual zip and class when hewent to the front here on much more testing ground than atHaydock. Great credit to the runners that finished in front ofhim, he was just coming to the end of his run. I don=t thinkanyone has lost any confidence. We know on a different day, onbetter ground, he will be back. I will be looking forward to nextyear. I would say the first thing is to give him a nice winter break,as it has been well earned.@

Pedigree Notes... The freakish Librisa Breeze becomes the first Group 1 winnerfor his Eclipse-winning sire and the first black-type winner for hisdam Bruxcalina (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), who finished third in theListed Prix de Liancourt over 10 1/2 furlongs, which gives a clueas to her inherent stamina. BY GEORGE! It looked doubtful for much of the straight, but Order of St

George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) lives to engage the public and he

found the line in time to kick off Ascot=s Champions Day with a

victory for Ballydoyle in Saturday=s G2 Qipco Long Distance Cup.

Travelling in mid-division throughout as if 4-5 favouritism was

generous, the dual G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Gold Cup hero, who

was fourth in the Arc 20 days ago, came under a drive before the

home straight and appeared to be going nowhere soon after.

Seemingly beaten approaching the furlong pole as old rival

Torcedor (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) strode into a clear lead under

Colm O=Donoghue, the market leader found something for Ryan

Moore to inhale that rival near the line and win by a half length,

with Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) the same margin back

in third. AI was surprised,@ Moore commented in reference to the

manner of Order of St Gerorge=s win. AI was very happy the

whole way round and I thought I had the front two covered, but

it didn=t look likely for a long time. As they came back to him, he

started to get motivated and he=s an unbelievably good horse

who ran a very good race in the Arc and has come here at the

end of a long hard year. He looked magnificent and is a beautiful

horse and a pleasure to have anything to do with. He=s very

talented, but that ground was very hard work--I=d call it very

soft.@

Now almost a veteran of these staying contests with some

middle-distance class thrown in along the way, Order of St

George has a mercurial quality that ensures there is never a dull

moment. His two wins in the Irish Leger in 2015 and 2017 were

carried out by a cumulative margin of 20 lengths, but in between

he went under to Wicklow Brave (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}) when

long odds-on. Cont. p12

Qipco Long Distance Cup S. cont.

His 2016 Gold Cup success was marked by the same initial

lethargy and finishing surge that characterised this

performance, but 12 months ago in this he was only

workmanlike as he ran on into fourth. Third and fourth in the

last two renewals of the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, with the

most recent possibly a stronger one, the bay provided a heart-

in-mouth moment for his legion of supporters as he came back

just 20 days after his Chantilly exertions.

Sluggish from the stalls as he has been of late, Order of St

George was allowed to slot into mid-division as his Gold Cup

conqueror Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) tried to

dominate from the front without the same conviction on

ground which had turned against him. As he fell away in the

back straight and the 3-year-old Mount Moriah (GB) (Mount

Nelson {GB}) took over, Moore looked poised as he brought the

Ballydoyle challenger forward with Stradivarius tracking him. As

Torcedor, who had beaten Order of St George in the G3 Vintage

Crop S. at Navan on Apr. 23, cut loose in the straight it looked as

if the favourite might not even make the frame, but there was

something left in the locker and when it came down to a

challenge he raised his game to prevail.

Aidan O=Brien, who was standing on the cusp of history, was

able to enjoy the perfect warm-up for his bid to join Bobby

Frankel on the world record. AHe is tough and hardy and never

stops,@ he said. AIn every race he has ever run in, he is always

finishing. We saw him in the Gold Cup and sometimes the line

comes too quick, but he doesn=t stop. He has had a busy time.

Obviously we are delighted with him. That is him for this year, I

imagine.@

Torcedor was registering a career-best and trainer Jessie

Harrington said, AHe=s run a real cracker, I=m absolutely thrilled.

He=s been beaten by a very good horse, it=s as simple as that. He

put it up to him and he=s come on again since the summer and

I=ve only had him a year, not even a year in training. I=m still

learning and he=ll be back next year.@

Stradivarius ran his usual game race in defeat on unfavourable

conditions and his trainer John Gosden said, AHe=s run a blinder.

It=s not his favourite ground, he has this ability to quicken and

you can=t really quicken in that. It was a tremendous race, Order

of St George brings Arc form in here. He stays in training and we

look forward to races like the Ascot Gold Cup.@

SOLID OAK Having ticked an all-important box when capturing the G1 Prix

du Cadran, His Highness The Aga Khan=s near-flawless stayer

Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) makes his history attempt on

Sunday as he bids for an unprecedented third edition of the

G1 Prix Royal-Oak at Saint-Cloud. While he was far from

dominant when taking his first Cadran at Chantilly on Sept. 30,

the homebred has always reserved his best for this race and

looks hard to oppose as he enters the latest renewal off four

straight pattern-race wins.

If there is one to put up a valid fight it could be the unexposed

Juddmonte 3-year-old colt Ice Breeze (GB) (Nayef), who

appeared to relish a step up to this trip when winning an above-

average renewal of the G2 Prix Chaudenay on the Cadran

undercard. He had previously beaten Vazirabad=s G1 Grand Prix

de Paris-winning stablemate Shakeel (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}) in the

G2 Prix Hocquart over a mile and a half also at Chantilly on June

18 and possesses the kind of middle-distance speed that can

make a difference in these races. Others who could pose a threat

are Gestut Auenquelle=s Sept. 17 G3 Deutsches St Leger winner

Oriental Eagle (Ger) (Campanologist) and Godolphin=s June 4

G3 Prix de Royaumont scorer Kitesurf (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is

raised markedly in trip by Andre Fabre after a latest third in the

12-furlong G2 Prix de Royallieu at Chantilly on Sept. 30.

KILLA INSTINCT Aidan O=Brien often reserves something a touch special for

Leopardstown=s G3 Killavullan S., and the race=s winning-most

trainer on 10 wins holds a strong hand in Sunday=s renewal.

Continuing a recent trend of pitching fillies in against the colts,

the stable is represented by a decent one in Bye Bye Baby (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}), who beat the subsequent G3 Oh So Sharp S. scorerVazirabad | Scoop Dyga

Altyn Orda (Ire) (Kyllachy {GB}) in a Newmarket maiden over

this trip on Sept. 30 before collecting Navan=s Listed

Staffordstown Stud S. at a mile eight days later. She is joined by

last Sunday=s six-furlong Naas maiden winner Dramatically (War

Front) and the colt Kenya (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who had caused a

deep impression at Cork at this distance 24 hours earlier when

making all to win by eight lengths.

Outside of Ballydoyle, Jessie Harrington puts forward a live

contender in Landshark (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who is upped

in trip after a latest second in the G3 Round Tower S. over six

furlongs at The Curragh on Aug. 27. While he was beaten six

lengths by U S Navy Flag (War Front) there, subsequent events

have put a shine on that form.

QUEEN IN WAITING A week on from Erasmus (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB})

establishing his dominion amongst the colts of the 2-year-old

generation in Cologne=s G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, it is the

turn of the fillies on Sunday as the G3 Ittlingen Preis der

Winterkonigin takes centre stage at Baden-Baden. Clear best in

the Listed Preis des Medienhauses DuMont Rheinland over 7

1/2 furlongs at Cologne last time on Sept. 23, Gunter Merkel=s

unbeaten Rock My Love (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) is re-

opposed by the runner-up Cabarita (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) and

Barista (Ger) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), who were three lengths

and a further two lengths behind her on that occasion. Of

interest is Gestut Wittekindshof=s Hannover maiden winner

Sword Peinture (Ger) (Peintre Celebre), but she has a mountain

to climb to get to the level already set by the favourite.

BRITISH CHAMPIONS CROWNED The awards for Britain=s 2017 champion jockey, trainer andowner were presented on British Champions Day at Ascot onSaturday, with Silvestre de Sousa winning the jockeys title andAidan O=Brien and Godolphin taking their respective categories. De Sousa was for the second time named champion jockey inBritain on Saturday, besting last year=s champion Jim Crowleywith 155 winners. Crowley rode 111, and Ryan Moore was thirdwith 103. De Sousa, who also won the championship in 2015,accepted his award at Ascot on Champions Day.

"It was my target, I am delighted to get there," said De Sousa. "Iam very proud to win for a second time, I've worked very hard, itis great. It is a long season, but I have been fit and healthy, I hada clear run through and am so pleased to have had the chance. Iam delighted to be here today for the award--it is ChampionsDay, there should be a great atmosphere." Looking forward, the rider added, "I don't really have any plansfor the winter, I will be in Britain until Christmas and the NewYear, then I will go abroad. Then I will get ready for the nextseason--I hope to ride a few winners again next year. I will take itas it comes and I hope to be busy again." Godolphin was shut out on Champions Day but nonethelesstook the champion owner title, which was accepted byGodolphin Chief Executive Joe Osborne. "It's been a great season for us and it's a credit to our trainersand horses for us to be Champion Owner; it means a lot to us,@Osborne said. "Today is a huge day--it's freshest in people'sminds towards the end of the season and we're delighted to be apart of it." For the second year in a row, O=Brien took the trainers titlewith John Gosden in second, and the Ballydoyle trainer said, "It'sa big team effort, and everyone works so hard, there are manylinks to the chain. We're very grateful to the lads at the top whoput the team together and send us the horses."

BOOM=S TIME AT LAST Decorated trainer David Hayes enjoyed one of the defining

moments of his career when Boom Time (Aus) (Flying Spur

{Aus}) sprang a 50-1 upset and led home a huge-priced quinella

in Saturday=s A$3-million G1 Caulfield Cup. Not only does Hayes

train the 6-year-old at Lindsay Park with his son Ben Hayes and

nephew Tom Dabernig; he is also the sole owner.

Hayes told Racing.com he purchased the horse, who had also in

the past been plagued by injury, in April when his former owner,

Kim Loxton, found himself unable to pay the bills.

"This horse had bowed a tendon and he'd just run a shocker in

the Sydney Cup and wasn't very marketable at all," Hayes said.

"But I knew the horse had decent ability and I didn't want to see

him leave the property so I purchased him. [Loxton] had gotten

into a little bit of trouble with the banks. Unfortunately, he had

to sell out of everything and shut down. But he rings in from time

to time. I'll talk to him tonight for sure and I owe him a lot of

drinks."

Eleventh of 14 in the aforementioned Sydney Cup, Boom Time

returned in Hayes=s colours in a Moonee Valley handicap on Aug.

26, checking in third, but dropped back to ninth over the same

track two weeks later. He improved for the added ground in the

2040 metre G3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley on Sept. 29, checking

in third, and was fourth over this track and trip in the G3 Herbert

Power S. last weekend.

Despite Hayes=s faith in the horse, another stroke of luck was

needed for Boom Time to make it into the Caulfield Cup field,

and that happened at the expense of Riichi Kondo and trainer

Darren Weir last week when Admire Deus (Jpn) (Admire Don

{Jpn}) unfortunately suffered an injury that ruled him out of the

race, leaving an opening.

Biding his time behind an early tussle for the lead under Cory

Parish as the field passed the stands the first time, Boom Time

settled about fifth on the fence down the backstretch as Sir Isaac

Newton (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) opened a big lead from the mare

Single Gaze (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}). The pacesetter had

opened a lead of about 15 lengths by the time he passed the

1000 metre mark, but the field quickly ate into it thereafter, and

he was swallowed up rounding the bend by Single Gaze and

Amelie=s Star (Aus) (Testa Rossa {Aus}) as the G1 Australian

Derby winner Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) made a bid three

wide. Boom Time, meanwhile, was weaving his way between

rivals on the inside with favoured Johannes Vermeer (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}) on his heels, and he split Single Gaze and Amelie=s

Star at the 150 metre mark to take the lead and drew off to win

by 1 1/4 lengths.

Hayes paid credit to low-profile stable jockey Parish post-race.

"A lot of jockey selections are political," Hayes told

Racing.com. "Owners have a lot of input into jockeys but I

trained it and owned it and so it was easy to put Cory on. He

knew the horse. He knew he went a bit fast last week and he

didn't tumble into that this time."

Hayes, who was training his third Caulfield Cup winner after

sending out Sheikh Hamdan=s Fraar (Topsider) in 1993 and

Tawqeet (Kingmambo) in 2006, added, "It makes it really special

doing it with the family. Ben was very emotional. I think he saw

his inheritance going up."

Pedigree Notes... Boom Time becomes the 13th Group 1 winner for his

pensioned former champion sire Flying Spur. He is the seventh

foal and lone stakes winner out of his seven-time winning dam,

who this year produced a colt by All American (Aus). Appearing

under the third dam is the multiple group winner Scandinavia

(Aus) (Snippets {Aus}), whose progeny include Group 1 winner

Magnus (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}) and the unraced Helsinge (Aus)

(Desert Sun {GB}), the dam of unbeaten world champion

sprinter Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) and her four-time

Group 1-winning half-brother and leading second-crop sire All

Too Hard (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus}). Click for the free

PINOT >ECLIPSES= ETHEREAL RIVALS,

PUNCHES TICKET TO OAKS by Alan Carasso

Pinot (Aus) (Pierro {Aus}), a single purchase by US-based Aron

Wellman=s Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners out of the 2016 Inglis

Australian Easter Yearling Sale, continued her ascent through the

ranks Saturday, overcoming a deep, double-digit draw to win

Caulfield=s G3 Ethereal S. (2000m) to earn a shot at the

G1 VRC Kennedy Oaks (2500m) at Flemington Nov. 9.

Ultimately loaded into barrier 15 following the scratching of

the race=s four emergency runners, the A$200,000 acquisition

was off to an uneventful beginning, but was four and five wide

for the opening three furlongs before finally crossing over to the

fence to head them off. Cont. p19

Pinot winning Saturday=s G3 Ethereal S. at Caulfield

Vince Caligiuri/Getty Images

Pinot cont.

Allowed to gallop along through even sections down the side

of the track, Pinot was asked to quicken by Stephen Baster with

about 500m to travel and the pair opened some daylight at the

entrance to the straight. A bit wobbly-legged and wanting to

drift in at the furlong grounds, Pinot began looking for the line,

but had the race in safe keeping and took it by 1 3/4 lengths as

the $5.50 (9-2) joint-favourite (video). Rimraam (NZ)

(Commands {Aus}) was second, a length better than Hiyaam

(NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) in third. The final time over a track

rated a good 3 was 2:02.71.

AIt was really good to see her do that,@ Eclipse=s Aron Wellman

told the TDN Saturday afternoon en route to the races at Santa

Anita. A[The wide draw] was certainly my biggest concern going

into the race. But [trainer] Gai [Waterhouse] is the self-

proclaimed most optimistic human being and she was

unconcerned, because the filly was doing so well. The ground

and the distance were concerns, but she dispelled of those

concerns, much to our delight.

He continued, AThe first quarter mile won the race and

Stephen [Baster] gets all the credit for that, it was absolutely

brilliant. The way he gradually allowed her to get to the lead as

opposed to sending her too abruptly--that probably would have

done her in right there and then and she probably wouldn=t

have found that extra. His ride was a thing of beauty and he

deserves credit for the win.@

Pinot--whose dam Dizelle (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) was herself a

winner of an Oaks--will need to negotiate an extra 500m, but

Wellman and team are not the least bit worried.

AThe one thing that we have always been very confident with

this filly is her endurance and stamina to get the Oaks distance,@

he said. AIt looked for a minute that she was looking for the wire,

but they really weren=t gaining on her all that much. Her stride

remained fluid and she never lost her action, she was really

reaching out at the wire. But her ability to get the distance is one

of the least of our concerns. We=re all pretty bullish on going to

Melbourne with a live chance in the Oaks.@

And Wellman, who will likely make the trip to Victoria after

attending the Breeders= Cup the prior weekend, welcomes the

opportunity to give the legendary Waterhouse her first win in

the prestigious event.

AShe=s been spot on about this filly all season long, she=s made

every right move,@ he said. AHer mission going back the last few

months was to have Pinot primed for a peak performance in the

Oaks and hopefully that=s what she=s accomplished. To win a race

like the Oaks would be a great honour and for it to be Gai=s first

Oaks, that would just amplify the experience. If it weren=t for

her, we wouldn=t have taken the plunge. She deserves all the

credit for putting us in this position.@

Kate Waterhouse is also a partner in the filly along with

Newgate Farm and bloodstock agent James Bester.
