The Complete Adi Mantra for Individual Meditation 1 of 2

Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bandh.

EYE POSITION: Focus your eyes on the tip of the nose.

MUDRA: Bring both palms in front of the Heart Center facing upward. Touch the sidesof the palms along the little fingers and sides of the hands, as if you will receive some-thing in them. Form Gyan Mudra in each hand.

BREATH PATTERN & MANTRA: Chant the entire mantra 3-5 times on one breath.Keep the number of repetitions per breath constant. The sound DAYV is chanted aminor third higher than the other sounds. The sound of DAYVAAcarries slightly on the AA sound.

ONG NAMO, GUROO DAYV NAMO,GUROO DAYV NAMO, GUROO DAYVAA

The sound of ONG is created in the inner chambers of the sinuses and upper palate. It is the NGsound that is emphasized. The first part of NAMO is short and rhymes with HUM. The syllable GUis pronounced as in the word good. The syllable ROO rhymes with the word true. The word DAYVrhymes with save. The AA in DAYVAA is chanted with the mouth open and the sound vibrating from an open throat.

TIME: Continue for 11-31 minutes for a powerful meditation and guidance. Yogi Bhajan did not restrict longer periods of practice.

COMMENTS

To center before a set of Kundalini Yoga we chant the Adi Mantra, Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo, three to five times. Adi means thefirst or primal; mantra is the creative projection of the mind through sound. This mantra is the first creative action. It centers youinto the Higher Self and reminds your lower mind that it is not your ego that will practice or teach Kundalini Yoga. Technically, itlinks you into the Golden Chain. The Golden Chain is the inner spark of kundalini that is passed from person to person; teacher tostudent; guru to teacher; cosmos and God to Guru. By chanting this mantra and linking to the Golden Chain, the exercises andmeditations that you practice are guided by your higher consciousness and all the teachers that have brought this opportunity toyou. It makes you very receptive and sensitive to the message of your body, mind, and intuition. It is used as a link when you teachand as preparation for your personal practice. However, it is not an individual mantra, complete in itself. It is a hook that creates aflow, which you serve. If you need an individual, spiritual link and source of guidance, then there is another form to use: theComplete Adi Mantra.

The complete individual form of the mantra immerses you in awareness and guidance for your personal situation. It establish-es a guiding beam between you in your immediate state, and your higher consciousness, that is true through all states. It is veryuseful if you are entering Shakti Pad in Kundalini Yoga. It is also excellent as a means to gain perspective and direction.

SADHANA MANTRAS FOR THE AQUARIAN AGE

Awakening the Consciousness

COPYRIGHT YOGI BHAJAN 2003

CHAPTER 12

Guidelines for Leading the Aquarian Sadhana

This is meant to be a model for morning sadhana only—timesare very approximate. Adjust according to the needs of thegroup. With a group sadhana, it is important to end sadhanaon time, so that everyone can adjust their schedules accordingly.

First guideline for sadhana leaders: Show up!If for any reason you are not able to make it on the day you areleading, you must arrange for someone else to lead.

Japji Sahib 4:00 am If you are unfamiliar with Japji or concerned about fine-tuningpronunciation, use a tape or CD. If possible, read Japji tantricstyle—male-female reading alternate lines. A copy of Japji can be

downloaded from sikhnet.com.

Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo & Yoga Set 4:20 am

Dim the lights. A good choice for the yoga set is a basic energizing, Kundalini-raising set, including lots of stretching,Spinal Flexes, and Breath of Fire. It’s a good idea to end withSat Kriya. The yoga set should be about 25-30 minutes. If youare going to play music during the yoga, choose mantra music, and play it at a low volume.

Deep RelaxationDim the lights further, if necessary. Keep the relaxation relativelyshort—5 minutes. If you choose to play music, keep it very low.Mantra music with a meditative quality is effective.

Meditations (62 minutes). Begin approximately 5:00 am

Lights can be turned very low or completely off. Keep sadhanamusic loud enough to be heard clearly throughout the entire sad-hana room, so that it envelops us, and is easy to sing alongwith, while being sensitive to not making it too loud. Let themusic surround and expand you.

After the meditations, starting approximately 6:00 amSadhana ends with a sacred prayer (which can be taken fromPeace Lagoon), singing the Sunshine song, and chanting LongSat Naams. For a deep experience of Naad, one can choose toend Sadhana by taking a hukam from a Nitnem, reading fromthe Siri Guru Granth Sahib, or having a Gurdwara program.

Hold the space, enjoy the bliss of this ambrosial hour. It will fillyour days with connection, sweetness, and purpose. Sat Naam.

5. Rakhe Rakhan Har (7 minutes)This is a shabd of protection against all negative forces whichmove against one’s walk on the path of destiny, both inner andouter. It cuts like a sword through every opposing vibration, thought, word, and action.

It is part of the evening prayer of the Sikhs (Rehiras). RakheRakhan Har was composed by Guru Arjan, the Fifth Guru.

Rakhay rakhanahaar aap ubaaria-anGur kee pairee paa-i kaaj savaari-anHoaa aap da-iaal manaho na visaari-anSaadh janaa kai sang bhavajal taari-anSaakat nindak dusht khin maa-eh bidaari-anTis saahib kee tayk Naanak manai maa-ehJis simrat sukh ho-i sagalay dookh jaa-eh

Thou who savest, save us all and take us across,Uplifting and giving the excellence. You gave us the touch of the lotus feet of the Guru, and all our jobs are done. You have become merciful, kind, and compassionate; and so our mind does not forget Thee.

In the company of the holy beings you take us from misfortune and calamities, scandals, and disrepute.

Godless, slanderous enemies—you finish them in timelessness. That great Lord is my anchor.Nanak, keep firm in your mind, by meditating and

repeating His NameAll happiness comes and all sorrows and pain go away.

6. Wahe Guru Wahe Jio (22 minutes)Chant this mantra sitting in Vir Asan: sitting on the left heel with theright knee up, right foot flat on the ground and hands in Prayer Pose.Eyes are focused at the tip of the nose.

Wha-hay Guroo Wha-hay Guroo Wha-hay Guroo Wha-hay Jeeo

Wahe Guru is a mantra of ecstasy. There is no real translation forit, though we could say, “Wow, God is great!” or “indescribablygreat is His Infinite, Ultimate Wisdom.” Jeeo is an affectionate butstill respectful variation of the word Jee which means soul. Weestablish ourselves for victory and the right to excel.

7. Guru Ram Das Chant (5 minutes)

Guroo Guroo Wha-hay Guroo Guroo Raam Das Guroo

This in praise of the consciousness of Guru Ram Das, invoking his spir-itual light, guidance, and protective grace. We are filled with humility.

EYE POSITION: Focus at the tip of the nose, through eyes 9/10th closed.

MUDRA: Elbows are by the sides, forearms angled up and outward with the fingers at thelevel of the throat. The exercise begins with the palms facing down.

When the palms hit facing down, the sidesof the Jupiter (index) fingers touch, and the thumbs cross below thehands, with the right thumb under the left.Yogi Bhajan said that the thumbs crossing this way is the key to the meditation.

HAR HAR

Chant continuously from the navel, using the tip of the tongue.

TIME: Continue for 3-11 minutes.Yogi Bhajan has said about the timing: “This meditation can be donefor up to 11 minutes. It is so powerful in bringing prosperity that morethan 11 minutes would be greedy.”

Venus Kriyas

How to Practice Venus KriyasVenus Kriyas are Kundalini Yoga exercises done with a partner, usually a partner of the opposite sex. Although Venus Kriyas are less intensethan White Tantric Yoga, they fall into the category of a more advanced Kundalini Yoga practice, because they intensify the experience of theexercise through the polarities of the male-female interaction. So, adhere to the following guidelines when teaching or practicing Venus Kriyas:

• Always tune in with the Adi Mantra: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo before practicing Venus Kriyas.• Venus Kriyas are not done to sensually or sexually seduce one’s partner. They are done from a state of elevation, to elevate the relation-

ship and the polarities to a purity and their highest vibration. If done with the wrong intention, they lose their effectiveness and in fact, it canbe more damaging than helpful.

• Limit the exercise to 3 minutes (unless specifically taught otherwise by Yogi Bhajan.)

Teaching Venus KriyasIf you are a Kundalini Yoga teacher, and are going to teach Venus Kriyas follow these guidelines:

• It is best to reserve Venus Kriyas only for those with Kundalini Yoga experience. Use your judgement to assess when your students havethe disicpline to practice Venus Kriyas. In Venus Kriyas, the energetic and sensory connections of the partners are used to elevate the sexualand sensory energy to a connection based on awareness and the capacity to see the sacred in the other.

• Do not line up in lines as in Tantric Yoga. Two people can sit together anywhere. If you line up, then the energy is shared diagonally. That is not the intention of Venus Kriyas. The energy is only intended to be shared between partners.

• Do not create an entire class using Venus Kriyas. Just use one or two along with a Kundalini Yoga kriya. Yogi Bhajan often added a shortVenus Kriya to his Friday classes, to honor the ruling planet Venus.

Here are two separate Venus Kriyas.

Heart LotusSit in Easy Pose or Lotus Pose across from your partner. Look into his or her eyes.

Part 1Form your hands into a lotus: all your fingers are spread with the hands cupped, and only your little fingers will touch. The man suspends his little fingers underthe woman’s little fingers, but the fingers of the partners DO NOT touch. Thismakes a heart lotus. Look into the soul, the heart of your partner, through theeyes. Continue for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes.

Part 2Now place one hand over the other at the Heart Center. Close your eyes and meditate on the HeartCenter. Go deep within, to the center of your being. Continue for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes.

TO END: Inhale deeply and exhale deeply 3 times, then relax.

Pushing Palms(Mitna Kriya)Sit in Easy Pose facing your partner, knees touching. Look into your partner’s eyes. Place yourpalms on your partner’s. Begin pushing the palms alternately while rhythmically chanting theGuru Gaitri Mantra:

GOBINDAY, MUKANDAY, UDAARAY, APAARAY,HAREEUNG, KAREEUNG, NIRNAAMAY, AKAAMAY

The woman chants the entire mantra first, then the man.

ONG NAMOOng namo guroo dayv namo(ADI MANTRA)

I bow to the subtle divine wisdom, the divine teacher withinAn ancient yogic mantra which allows the chanter to relate instantlyto the divine teacher within. Adi means primal or first and mantrameans the creative mental projection using sound. It is used to tunein before Kundalini Yoga classes, to center us in the higher self, andto spiritually guide both the teacher and the students during the class.

ONG SOHUNGOng means creative consciousness and so hung means ”I am Thou.”Chanting the word “hung” stimulates and opens the Heart Chakra.

PAVAN GURUPavan pavan pavan pavan Par para pavan gurooPavan guroo wha-hay guroo,Wha-hay Guroo pavan guroo(PRAN BANDHA MANTRA)Pavan is the air, the breath, carrier of the prana, the life force. This isGod in action. This mantra increases the pranic energy and gives theexperience of “may the force be with you.”

PRITHVI HAI(ISHT SODHANA MANTRA)

Prithvee hai akaash hai guroo raam daas haiThis mantra balances the Earth and Heavens. It represents the strucksounds of Earth (pritvi) and the unstruck sounds of Heaven (akash),crowning with the protection of the Neutral Mind, Guru Ram Das.(Hai means “is.”) This mantra can penetrate the cosmos, transcend-ing past, present, and future.

RA MA DA SA(SIRI GAITRI MANTRA OR SIRI MANTRA)

Raa maa daa saa saa say so hungRaa=Sun. Maa=Moon. Daa=Earth. Saa=impersonal Infinity.Say=Thou.Saa Say=totality of Infinity. So=personal sense of merger and identity.Hung=the Infinite vibrating and real.So Hung= "I am Thou."This mantra is a healing mantra in Kundalini Yoga and is an attune-ment of the self to the universe. It brings balance. These eight soundsstimulate the kundalini flow in the central channel of the spine forhealing. This mantra combines Earth (raa maa daa) and Ether (saa say so hung), with Saa as the link word.

RAKHE RAKHANHARRakhay rakhanhaar aap ubaariunGur kee pairee paa-eh kaaj savaariunHoaa aap dayaal manho na visaariun Saadh janaa kai sung bhavjal taariunSaakat nindak dusht khin maa-eh bidaariunTis saahib kee tayk naanak manai maa-ehJis simrat sukh ho-eh saglay dookh jaa-ehGod Himself is looking out for us,gives us the light, and takes care of our affairs.God is merciful, and never forgets us.God guides us, giving us good people to help us.God does not allow hurt to come to us.I take comfort in the thought of God.When I remember God, I feel peaceful and happyand all my pain departs.

These are the words of Guru Arjan, the 5th Sikh Guru, and are forcomplete protection. It is from the evening prayer (Rehiras), whichadds energy to one’s being, and helps when you are physically weakor have limited wealth. It is a victory song which allows us to beguided by God’s graceful and merciful hand. It does away with theobstacles to fulfilling one’s destiny.

SA RE SA SA(ANTAR NAAD MANTRA)

Saa ray saa saa, saa ray saa saa, saa ray saa saa, saa rungHar ray har har, har ray har har, har ray har har, har rungSaa is the Infinite, the Totality, God. It is the element of ether. It isthe origin, the beginning, and it contains all other effects. It is subtleand beyond. Har is the creativity of the Earth. It is the dense element, the power of manifestation, the tangible, the personal. These soundsare woven together and then projected through the sound of ung orcomplete Totality. This is the base mantra of all mantras. Adversitymelts before this mantra. It gives you the capacity of effective com-munication so your words contain mastery and impact. This mantrahelps you conquer the wisdom of the past, present, and future. Itbrings you peace and prosperity even if it wasn’t in your destiny.

SAT NAM(BIJ MANTRA)

Sat naamThis mantra is probably the most widely used mantra in the practiceof Kundalini Yoga. Sat means truth—the reality of one’s existence.Naam means the identity. It is a bij (or seed) mantra. Within theseed is contained all the knowledge of the fully grown tree. Theessence or seed is the identity of truth embodied in condensedform, Chanting this mantra awakens the soul and gives you yourdestiny. This mantra balances the five elements (tattvas).

e recognize that as Kundalini Yoga Teachers we arecommitted to living in our higher consciousness. We conduct our lives in a spirit of integrity. In The

Teachers Oath, The Definition of a Yogi, and The 16 Facets ofPerfection of a Kundalini Yoga Teacher, Yogi Bhajan gives us theguidelines for this journey of consciousness, the daily practice ofwhich will support us as Kundalini Yoga Teachers.

The Teachers Oath“I am not a woman.” (Mercury finger down)

“I am not a man.” (Sun finger down)

“I am not a person.” (Saturn finger down)

“I am not myself.” (Jupiter finger down)

“I am a teacher.” (Thumb stays up)

The Definition of a YogiThe Yogi is not affected by the opposite polarities of life—

neither by praise nor by slander, neither by riches nor by poverty, neither by health nor by illness, neither by life nor by death. The Will of God is the will of the Yogi. He or she surrenders

his or her personal will to the Will of God.When Kundalini, the primal force of the Prana (life energy),

penetrates and prevails throughout the chakras, the Yogi remains stableto the odds of Karma and walks the even path of Dharma.

The Raj Yogi is a sage and a king in the face of all temptations, situations, events, and environments.

Those who meditate on Guru Ram Das are blessed throughmiracles to be royal sages throughout the ages.

Yogi Bhajan, September 1995

W

The 16 Facets of Perfection of a Kundalini Yoga TeacherSola Kalyan Sumpuran Yogi Bhajan, September 1995

1. A Teacher will never alter the teachings because of personal opinion. Youwill teach by example.

2. The higher you grow as a Teacher, the more humble you have to be.3. The Teacher always serves the students, so they can become ten times

stronger than you, because every student is a Teacher for tomorrow.4. A Teacher has to be extremely kind, caring, compassionate, and forgiving.5. As a Teacher you should always poke, provoke, confront, and elevate your

students to excellence.6. As a Teacher you have to continuously imagine, visualize, believe, expand

in all directions, connect to everything, meditate, practice, and project that youare Ang Sang Wahe Guru (“With every limb, every part of me, I belong to theDivine.”), and that the energy of Guru Ram Das is flowing through you.

7. As a Teacher you will always be in Chardi Kala (elevated spirits) and con-nected to your higher self, never caught in emotional turmoil. Count your bless-ings, not your curses. Always be graceful. Glow and grow.

8. As a Teacher you will continuously graduate towards the Divinity andInfinity that is the essence of your existence. You are not a human born for aspiritual search, you are a spirit, an Atma (soul), born for an experience as ahuman. Your purity and piety as an Atma is always maintained, protected, exalt-ed, projected, as a priority over everything and kept in sight mentally, physically, and spiritually.

9. As a Teacher listen to, and obey all righteous teachings. If you read some-thing, you will know it; if you write something, you will understand it; if youteach something, you will perfect it.

It is perfection of your deliverance that gives you grace as a Teacher. Your suc-cess as a Teacher lies not in what you know, but in what your student receives.

A Teacher is measured by the growth, dignity, and excellence of the student. If youfind any talent, nurture it, teach it, exalt it to the best of your ability and divinity.

10. As a Teacher do not relate to ego or politics. Always relate to the spirit, soul, and essence of a person. Always relate to the intelligence, talent, and con-sciousness of a person. Always relate to the manners, methods, and mentality ofa person. Pure thoughts are the way to universal knowledge and will make youbountiful, blissful, and beautiful.

11. God and Guru have blessed you with Karma (law of cause and effect). Asa Teacher you must offer yourself in Dharma (lifestyle of righteousness) to honorthe gift of God of life. Never create a drift or rift between you and your Atma.

12. A Teacher wears white cotton clothing while teaching. White clothingmakes you as a Teacher look divine and represent light. The color white representsthe seven colors. Cotton is the flower of the Earth. It is good for your psyche, your energy, and your nervous system. Your way of dressing should be saintly andmake you glow with grace. You should look like a sage and a prince or princessof peace and divinity. A Teacher is a Ph.D.—Prince or Princess of High Divinity.

13. Just as a seed has to wither to become a tree and bear fruit, Teachers whodo not become perfect students do not become perfect Masters.

14. The Universal Spirit that rotates the Earth can take care of all your prob-lems. As a Teacher you have to learn trust and faith. Regard every breath of lifeas a gift. Strive for conscious breathing, breathing one breath a minute.

15. The banner of a Teacher is: “In God I dwell.” The standard of arms of aTeacher is: “God within me I trust.”

The honor of a Teacher is: “In the Name of God I serve.”The motto of a Teacher is: “Peace of mind and peace within the material world.”16. A Teacher needs to commit to Nam, the God-given identity.Without Nam, you cannot have the purity of self and the divine

projected grace to master all the elements.Without commitment there is no character.Without character there is no dignity.Without dignity there is no divinity.Without divinity there is no grace. Without grace you cannot sacrifice or serve others. Your compassion and pres-

ence will not work, and you cannot be happy.Remember once and for all, happiness is your birthright, and it is always right

to be happy. So be happy, be healthy, and be holy.We are all holy, because we all have nine holes. Adding two arms and two legs

makes thirteen. You are born with thirteen, you will live with thirteen, you willdie with thirteen. Thirteen (three and one) makes four—Cup of Prayer. Prayer isyour power, your protector, and your provider. Sat Nam
