From the Principal Principal Forum For two days this week Janelle Wadsworth and I attended a Regional forum which highlighted the innovative work occurring across the state. We listened to presentations from international leaders from Canada and the UK who spoke about school excellence and the impact of working collectively and collaboratively on school improvement. There was a particular focus on Literacy and Numeracy and a new strategy was introduced. The conference was very affirming. Here at Chirnside Park our focus on Literacy and Numeracy has been in place for several years now and we have implemented many strategies aiming for excellence. Our Literacy programs are recognised as cutting edge and we are achieving great results particularly in Reading and Writing. Many schools have come to learn from us. When teachers work together to improve their practice students learn more. To support teachers in their quest for constant improvement a booklet of ‘High Impact Teaching Strategies’ was given out which detailed a shared understanding of what excellent teaching and learning practice looks like. These 10 instructional practices reliably increase student learning whenever they are applied. In brief these strategies are:- setting goals, structuring lessons, explicit teaching, worked examples, collaborative learning, multiple exposures, questioning, feedback, metacognitive strategies and differentiated teaching. This resource will provide teachers with a common language to use in planning, monitoring and reflecting on classroom practice and a way of measuring proficiency in teaching practice. At Chirnside, we are always looking to improve. Not only do we want our students to be their best selves, we also want our teachers to be the best teachers they can be. As you would understand, the teachers are the conduit to your child’s learning and so our focus must be on their professional growth. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated staff here at Chirnside. They are always looking to improve and search out professional learning whenever possible. Virtues We are continuing our professional development in implementing the Virtues program. So far we have had 5 after school sessions learning about how best to develop character in our children. These sessions have been a wonderful way of looking at character development in depth. We have learnt firsthand about how it feels to be acknowledged for demonstrating good character. We have also practised guiding and correcting, using the language of the Virtues with each other, so that we can better understand the student perspective. Next term we will delve further into the program and be coached in the implementation. We are looking forward to developing our expertise in this area. Gifted Insights This term we offered a new program aimed specifically at developing the special needs of children who are advanced thinkers with a high potential for learning. All the feedback I have received from parents whose children attended, has been extremely positive. They say their children are excited to come to school on the day of the program and have loved participating in challenging learning. I have been in to observe the program several times and have been very impressed by the teacher and the way she takes every opportunity to challenge and extend both their knowledge and skills. It is personalised learning at its best. The program will be offered again next term. Please see the attached information for program details if you are interested. Subway Lunches Due to popular demand Subway lunches will become a regular offering. From the second week back you will be able to order a Subway lunch once a week. Watch out for the notice that will come out next week. As this is the last newsletter for the term may I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and relaxing break. It has been a long and very busy term; the children are tired and will benefit from some time away from school to rejuvenate (and just quietly so will our teachers).

Physical Education Interschool Cross Country A big congratulations to all the students who competed in the District and Division Cross Country whilst I was away over the past month. We had some outstanding results and all students should be proud of their efforts. Well done especially to the students who committed to their training and attended weekly Running Clubs before school. Briar K and Dakoda M both qualified for the Regional Championships due to their placings of 6th and 15th respectively at Division. At Regionals this week they placed 57th and 73rd respectively in their races. Well done for representing our school so proudly girls! Grade 3/4 Hawthron FC Clinic Next week on Tuesday 27th June at lunchtime the Grade 3/4’s will be taking part in a special Health and Fitness program being hosted by the Hawthorn AFL team during lunchtime at our school. Students are allowed to wear footy gear on the day (Grade 3/4 students only). Grade 3/4 Hooptime. As previously stated, Grade 3/4 Hooptime will be held on Friday 28th July at Kilsyth stadium. Notices will go home to students who indicated they would like to take part, later this week. Grade 5/6 Sport The winter season has now come to an end. It was a very successful season for CPPS as we finished on top of the ladder in Open Netball and came a close 2nd in AFL, losing only 1 match (by 2 points). Well done to all competitors this term and especially to the Open Netball team who now progress to Division finals to be announced next term. Congratulations also to the Volleyball team who finally got their first win for the season in the very last round. It was well deserved after all their training and improvement throughout the season. Also a noteworthy mention to our soccer team who even though they didn’t win any matches during the season, they still trained hard, and most importantly always encouraged each other and never put each other down. They really worked as a TEAM! A big thanks to all the teachers, ES staff and parents for all their hard work and effort with the teams during the season!

Congratulations to the Mixed Netball team who are going through to the District Finals after being undefeated in Interschool Sport for the Term 2 season.

Marvellous Movers with Lego

Making a smoothie, mixing a cake, riding a bike, fidgeting with a spinner, plus all kinds of manufacturing involve machines which move.

Use Lego Technic elements (or larger equivalent for little fingers) to build and investigate marvellous moving models. Discover and apply the principles of how we use gears, wheels and axles in machines to cook, have fun, play, travel and work.

Learn and share Lego building and storage tips.

This unit is new and uses models and teaches principles you have not met in previous engineering units.

Teacher: Jennifer Grant
