They refuse to believe in the resurrection of the dead. We can see they did not agree with Jesus. To help them to go beyond their concerns about matrimony and inheritance, Jesus tells them that in the next life they do not have to get married. What is Heaven? / Fullness of communion with God: Those who have welcomed God into their lives and sincerely opened themselves to his love, at the moment of death, will enjoy the fullness of communion with God (for now our communion is limited) that is the deepest human longing and the state of maximum happiness. In the Old Testament, heaven is the dwelling-place of God that is distinguished from human beings. God sees and judges from the heights of heaven and comes down when he is called upon. In the New Testament, heaven is related to the mystery of Christ and his suffer- ing, death and resurrection. God our Father who is rich in mercy, looking at the great sacrifice of his Son allowed us to follow His path to Heaven that was closed after the sin of our first parents. Many think about this “path” in physical terms. This is more a spiritual term. “Heaven” or “happiness” is neither an abstraction nor a physical place in the clouds, but a living, personal relationship with God. This earth is subject to limits but through proper life and the sacraments we already experi- ence joy and peace that hopefully some day we will enjoy completely. For now we seek “the things that are above” and hear that Jesus urges us “collect treasures in heaven”. Jack Curran, O.M.I., has been battling cancer for some time and after undergoing quite a few treatments his cancer unfortunately has not been cured; he now has terminal cancer and will need additional care. This is truly devastating news to all, but we know that our Lord is with him and will give Fr. Jack all the strength he will need as he goes through this difficult jour- ney. Fr. Jack will be leaving to one of our Oblate nursing and elderly facilities located in Tewkesbury, Massachusetts, near Boston to receive the care he needs at this time. I cordially invite you and your family to a Mass of Thanksgiving and Anointing of the Sick at Saint Ferdinand’s Church on Friday, November 15 at 7p.m.; to thank God for all the ministry that Fr. Jack has done in the San Fer- nando Valley and ask for the Lord’s healing to come upon him, body and soul. Immediately following the Mass, you are all cordially invited to a reception in the Parish Hall, to thank Fr. Jack and show him all the love and support we have always had for him.
