TV SHOW PRODUCTION

"The concept that I am working on is in studio with a massive scenic design set and we're shooting 3-4 30 minute

episodes per day on HD with 5 cameras in a live switch situation. We also have an animated 30 sec opening

sequence and 3-4 45 sec animated vignettes within the program. My total budget for 13 episodes with contingencies is just over $50k per episode."

TV SHOW PRODUCTION

Powerhouse sitcoms from the mid-90s to early '00s, like Malcolm in the Middle, Home Improvement, Seinfield, Friends, and Frasier, each cost $3-$5 million per episode.

Meanwhile, for most sitcoms, from the mid-'90s to 2000, costs rose from about $600,000-$800,000 to about $800,000 to $900,000 per episode.

Some factors include switching from multi-camera to single camera in order to lower costs.

While some production companies have slashed production costs, the average cost of a half-hour program grew from "$994,000 to $1,227,000 per episode, or 23.4 percent, between 2000 and 2003 alone.“

MOVIE PRODUCTION

Ideally, a Hollywood film has enough theaters interested in screening it to become profitable within a few months of release. A blockbuster movie with a 30 million dollar production budget may actually gross 100 million dollars in gross sales within two months if the audience is truly interested in the film's subject matter. If the performances are seen as inferior or the storyline predictable, the film may never sell enough tickets to recoup its production costs.

Page 16: Calculating Movie & Sports

MOVIE PRODUCTION

That is one good reason why most Hollywood blockbusters use universal themes of action or romance or comedy instead of introspective or edgier subjects. Big-budget motion pictures need to appeal to a general audience if they are to have any chance of success. In a perfect world, some of the profits of a blockbuster film are diverted towards quieter, more artistic films, but quite often the producers will decide to make a more lucrative sequel or another movie in the same genre.

United States

The first broadcast of a sporting event took place on 11 April 1921 when Westinghouse station KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania broadcast a 10-round, no decision boxing match between Johnny Dundee and Johnny Ray at Pittsburgh’s Motor Square Garden.

NBC broadcast the first televised National Football League (NFL) game when they carried the 22 October 1939 game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The broadcast rights of the NFL would go on to become an important property following the 1958 NFL Championship.

GLOBAL

United Kingdom

The first sports event broadcast in the United Kingdom was a Rugby Union international between England and Wales, broadcast from Twickenham in January 1927. Two weeks later the first broadcast of a football match took place, with the BBC covering Arsenal's league fixture against Sheffield United at Highbury. Listeners to the broadcast could use numbered grids published in the Radio Times in order to ascertain in which area of the pitch the action was taking place due to a second commentator reading out grid references during the match.

The United Kingdom saw the first live television broadcast of a football match, with the BBC showing a specially arranged fixture between Arsenal and Arsenal Reserves on 16th September 1937.

GANEFO 1963
