CALÇOTS• The calçots are a sort of sweet

onions.• Farmers plant them at the end of

winter. They collect the onions in spring and the bulbs in summer.

• Farmers usually plant them in the Tarragona province.

• To grow them, we need a good land, water and sun.

• We can eat them in winter and until the end of the spring.

What is Romesco sauce?• Romesco is the sauce that we eat with calçots. In

fact, we dip the calçots in romesco.• This is something that you never tasted before.• It is thick with lumps and it is red and orange.

Recipe

1. 1 head of garlic.2. 500g. of tomatoes.3. 300g. almonds.4. Some hazelnuts.5. Two mint leaves.6. Two breakfast cookies.7. One piece of bread.8. 35g. Of vinegar.9. One spoon of salt.10. 1l. Of oil.

Steps

1. Grind one head of garlic and 500g. of tomatoes.

2. Grind 300g. almond, some hazelnuts and the two mint leaves.

3.Grind the two breakfast cookies and a slice of bread.

4.Add 35g. of vinegar to the mixture and one spoon of salt.

5. Pour 1l. of oil.

6. Mix all the ingredients with a blender

ARTICHOKE• The arctichoke is a vegetable that we eat in the

calçotada. • The artichoke is a plant which grows in places with

mild climate.• It sometimes grows with thorns .

ORIGIN

The artichoke comes from the south of Europe, including Spain.

DESCRIPTION

• This plant lives for four or five years.• It grows up to two meters in height.• The top of the leaf is green and the

lower part is white.• Artichokes grow from the end of

october until the spring season.• It needs lot of water.

THE CALÇOTADA PARTY

What do they need to prepare the calçotada?• Barbecue• Hot coal• Different types of cold meat (side dish or appetizer): chorizo,

fuet, black pudding, serrano ham or cheese.• Vegetables: calçots, tomatoes, artichokes, peppers, garlic,

escalivada( baked peppers, onions, zucchini, egg plants), asparragus and boiled beans.

• Sausages.• Good weather. • Family or friends.

How do we eat it?

• You need to wear a special bib.• Take the calçots with your hand. • Dip it in the romesco sauce .• Look up and put it in your

mouth.• Remember that you also have

sausages, vegetables and a dessert to eat.
