Earlier in the month, Loftus Detachment, C Company helped out at Skinningrove Mining Museum, where they were holding a Wartime Weekend. Alongside displays of wartime rations, and what it was like to work in the mine during the war, Lt Hart and his cadets operated the climbing wall and took the chance to be guided through the mine and other displays by staff at the museum. It also gave the detachment time to show off their new cut outs, which can offer a simple photo opportunity, or even perhaps a ‘coconut shy’ experience throwing wet sponges at the volunteers!

Each year the Fellmongers of Richmond host an award ceremony for a regular soldier and cadet from the Yorkshire Regiment who have been nominated by their OCs, to celebrate their support for the Yorkshire Regiment. Congratulations to this year's cadet recipient, Sgt Taylor-Cockerill of Coulby Newham detachment, B Company. Since joining Cleveland ACF in December 2009 she has devoted the majority of her spare time to ACF activities, which is reflected in her cadet and sporting achievements at County and National level, where she is presently the National long jump champion for the second consecutive year. A stalwart member of her detachment, with a courteous and correct attitude to her ACF officers and adult instructors, and a firm but considerate leadership amongst her peers and subordinates, she is extremely professional in relation to her performance of cadet duties, giving a great deal back to her detachment, Company and County as well as progressively benefitting herself from her ACF training.

Welcome to SI Sean Phillips, of Hartlepool Rifles Detachment, after the succesful completion of his ITC at Stainton Camp. Cleveland ACF Commandant, Col Laker, was pleased to present Sean with his stripes (pictured left), after presenting awards and taking the salute from the course passing out parade. SI Phillips is not completely new to ACF instructing, though, having been an instructor with Durham ACF until 1994. Following a move to Hartlepool after which his son joined Cleveland ACF, Sean also thought it was time to come back, and the rest is history.

Cadets from B Company, on a charity bagpack at ASDA, Portrack Lane on Saturday 25th May, had a surprise customer’s shopping to deal with. Ashley Banjo, leader of the dance group Diversity which came to fame through their appearances on, and eventual victory in, Britain’s Got Talent, was in the area filming for a TV series. Cadets and instructors took their chance to have their picture taken with Ashley, before returning to raise more than £1500 for an assortment of causes including annual camp at Sennelager next year.

Norton TA Centre’s Detachments, Norton RE and NORTON PARA, spent a sunny day at Norton Fair raising money, running the climbing wall and actively trying to recruit cadets and adult volunteers to the cause. But in their breaks they took time out to enjoy all the fair had to offer, from garishly pink candy floss to dancing displays at the centre of Norton Green. Among those stands were some Medieval Re-enactors, and after brief instruction from an expert, cadets had the chance to don helmet and shield, take up their axes and try out weapon handling from an entirely different era.

Students and Staff from Bishopsgarth School, where a new Cleveland ACF detachment is due to open on Tuesday 4th June, took to the wilds of Northumberland to enjoy a week of Outreach with Adult Volunteers and Cadets from Cleveland Army Cadet Force, experiencing a wide range of adventures and challenges. From First Aid, fitness training and drill in camp at Otterburn, to hill walking, climbing, abseiling and raft building at Kielder and Hadrian's wall, a full range of very different experiences were had by all. Cleveland Commandant, Col Tony Laker, presented certificates to all participants, and now looks forward to a successful detachment opening.
