Task at hand
In a group design a cabinet/ storage unit for one of the following categories:!1. collector (toys, small cars, stones, etc.)!2. bachelor (man, woman)!3. freelance worker (designer, photographer, writer, etc)!
Do not forget to take into consideration the life style of the person you are designing for. Make a storage unit appropriate to the needs of person.! !Requirements: perspective drawings in colour, orthographic drawings, dimensions (mm), scenario, materials, details!(computer or hand-made presentations should be done on A3 paper size) !!Dates: Final is 17th of April and critics 6, 13, and 20 of March and 10 of April. !
OPTION 2: Bachelor !The selected category for the storage unit is a bachelor (man or woman)!!Basic information on the specified client:!Name of the client: Mia!Gender: female!Age: early twenties !Occupation: financial advisor!Residence: New York!Interests: hosting “get togethers” with friends, loves to party, loves music and festivals, enjoys photography, animal lover and vegetarian !Traits: sociable, caring, cooperative, determined, devoted, persuasive, hard-working, honest, humble, and fun !
Scenario: The client of the cabinet
• Mia is a young, hard working orientated individual!• She is interchangeably a “broker”, however also deals with investments,
provides guidance with savings, creates budgets, handles debt, deals with retirement plans, forecasts future economic trends, etc!
• Looking at the fundamentals of Miaʼs occupation itʼs obvious that Mia has a busy and hectic lifestyle, as her schedule is ultimately dedicated to her job.!
• A great financial advisor develops great relationships with their clients!• Therefore, Mia is constantly on the go, as she is always meeting up with
business firms and attending appointments!• Job entails not only thinking about herself but also lives of other individualʼs!• As Miaʼs full-time job is constantly on-the-go, stressful, persistently needing
a persona of attentiveness, relatively “bland”, and essentially lacking excitement. Itʼs only evident to assume that Mia would need an outlet!
Scenario: Lifestyle of the client
• A definite factor to take into consideration while designing a storage space for Mia is her interior space !
• Cohesiveness is evident !• Designing a beautiful piece thatʼs perfect in functionality and aesthetics is
evidently useless if it doesnʼt look appropriate for the apartment space!• Miaʼs home is clean, minimal and modern!• A contrast between ultra-modern, and funky (party themed)!• Colours, lines, forms and shapes, are very minimalistic, as she brings
clients home to converse and discuss ideas in relation to her job!• Mia likes her apartment to entail a somewhat party vibe, as she always
invites her group of friends over!• However is still simultaneously professional !• Features a lot of abstract and lively artworks to brighten and lift the energy!• The following slides are some examples of what her apartment might look
like:!
Scenario: Mia’s apartment
Ultimate question: What is a suitable storage unit for the client?!!Either to create a storage unit to assist Miaʼs needs in:!1. her professional side of her life and, or!2. the polar opposite (unwinding from it) !
Decision making
Decision: To design an alcohol cabinet
• In America, liquor and or alcohol cabinets escalated in popularity during the early 1900ʼs!
• They were essentially small bars for the purpose of storing alcohol!• Initially were invented to hide alcohol during the prohibition period !• Thus, these cabinets were often designed to camouflage with the surrounding
correlating furniture !• They were typically made from wood !• Resembling hutches or vanities!

Shape and forms:
Initial sketches
Description of cabinet: • Free-standing drink cabinet !• Classical two door cabinet !• Several conjoining pieces inside + display compartments to showcase special
bottles, old wines etc.!• Compartments needed for: bottles of alcohol, glasses, bottle openers, bin for
caps and corks etc!• Therefore thicker doors (30cm)!• Doors will open and slide back parallel to each side of the cabinet !• Entire cabinet is approximately 180cm tall and 100cm wide and 40 thick!• The cabinet doors have a thickness of 13cm !• Description: Classic, classy, funky, modernistic, futuristic, playful !• Evidently the idea of the cabinet is to collect the two contradicting principles of
Miaʼs lifestyle, professionalism and socialism !• Colour: exterior is grey and colour for interior!• Interior colour variation: deep red, green, warm yellow, orange (inspired from
wines)!• Style: futuristic/ modern!• Shapes are geometrical (inspired from generic shapes of alcohol glasses etc)!
!
Description of cabinet continued: • Simple and rectangle cabinet handle!• Cabinet has a pivot door!• Allows your door to pivot open then slide back into the slides of the cabinet!• Keeping in mind Miaʼs cabinet doors are much thicker (stereo system is in the
doors)!• Obtains a built in stereo system on the side of the doors!
!
List of Materials: 1. Interior of cabinet: Plexiglass (acrylic glass)!Poly(methyl methacrylate) is a transparent thermoplastic, often used as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Technically is not a type of glass, the substance has sometimes historically been called acrylic glass.!
! !!2. Exterior structure of the cabinet: Stainless steel!Stainless steel most valuable property is itʼs high resistance to corrosion. A natural occurring chromium-rich oxide film is tightly adherent to the surface of the steel and is exceedingly protective. !
! !!3. Inside/body of the cabinet: Anemix!Anemix is formed by two young lighting designers and architects, of which are Ximena Munoz and Paulina Villalobos. Anemix is a new modern lighting system that creates a unique 3D effect.!!4. Refrigerator compartments:!Materials such as foam, steel tube lining, and fixtures are featured. These materials will provide proper insulation and efficient sealing to keep wine refrigerated. !!!

Colour Variation • Colour variation of the alcohol cabinet was considered!• Deep green, orange and red were the main colour selections as they all
resemble and correlate with wine !• Deep red and a magenta red was our favourite combination!
