Greetings,It was another great month with great rides, people,FUN, and a safety presentation by our AssistantEducator, Roger. Roger did an excellent job on thetopic of heat exhaustion/stroke which I believe hewill submit in this newsletter.Well, as I write this newsletter my bike has beensent far, far away to get an extra wheel installed. Iam having a California Side Car Kit installed. Bythis time I am hopeful that the mechanic has pickedup the kit from CSC. Sal and Patti were graciousenough to lend me their trike in the meantime. I haveto say, it was a very relaxing ride as we went to CA-2N rally in Sonora. We saw a lot of trikes at the rallyridden by different age groups. For those that stillthink they are for older people, there where peopleyounger than me…LOL.The rally was great; they know how to throw a party.I would like to make other rallies in the future. I hadDouglas as my tail gunner and Pete taking up thecenter position. We all had a great ride up and backand flowed like a well-oiled machine! Douglas tookthe lead on the ride back and unfortunately Pete hadto get home early so he left after lunch. When wearrived we met up with Gary and Lori. They liveclose to the fairgrounds where it was being held. They won all sorts of prizes and we weren’t surethey would fit it all on their trike, but they did it!I have to say it took a lot of hands to successfullypull that off. They had wonderful prizes and50/25/15/10 cash gifts. They had put together awonderful lunch and the plates where piled high. Idon’t think you could have asked for better weathertoo! We have a lot of rides coming up in July so pleasecheck the calendar or see the emails from our YahooGroup.

The proud keeper of the wingnut for this month is our Chapter CD, Charlie, for his keen wild animal identification on the CalaverasRide.

April 30 email from Verdi:

Hi everybody,

Here we are in Bora Bora! We were perusing theshops prior to our Helmet Dive.

Helmet Dive? You ask? Cliff, Lois Benzel & us didthis helmet dive whereby each person donned oneof those big, heavy helmets the suited deep seadivers use, to walk around a shallow (10 ft deep)reef area to feed the fish with bread they gave us indive nets. A hoist is used to place the helmet onyour shoulders half way down the ladder & againwhen you come up. What an experience for a non-scuba diver! We got to touch a sea anemone!Which feels sticky (to catch their prey) by the way.We also had lunch at the famous Bloody Mary's,where all the famous people go when in Bora Bora.

On our short tour of Tahiti, one of our stops was atthis very active waterfall. This photo happened justbefore we got drenched by a rain storm. We werepretty much dry by the time we had lunch on thewharf.

Next stop is just over my shoulder, Moorea. If wemiss the ship sailing (@ 3:30 A.M.), a ferry willtake you across for $25 U.S.

2012-07 ACD Newsletter

Greetings from Sweet Home Alabama! And yes, we do miss all y’all. We may be a couple ofthousand miles away, but our hearts and minds are with ourgood friends in CA2S.

June was a hectic month for us getting the MoHo(motorhome) ready for the trip not to mention ourselves. Notonly do we have to pack for the trip for ourselves, we alsohave to pack up Patti’s business work and our bookwork forBreeze Vacation Rentals, and of course the dogs – Hey, Ithought I was retired.

The end of May treated us to one of the best CA2S rides wehave been on to date. Ron did a fantastic job of bringing usthrough the gold country. The ride was even paced and Iheard Ron get a lot of kudos for his skill in leading the ride –save the “old highway”. The ride brought memories for mewhen I lived in Arnold. I saw a lot of familiar places andenjoyed looking back. Big Trees Park was a treat, especiallythe informative talk by the docent. What a beautiful state weare blessed with. We enjoyed supporting Ron in the tail gunposition, but we had to use our “Quad” as our bike was in theshop getting a new gas tank. So, with Charlie’s help I hookedup a CB, stuck a magnetic antenna on the roof – and we weregood to go. The ride was spectacular and scenery incredible.I’m sure you’ve heard enough about that “big eared deer” wewere alerted to. Hey, you never know. Llamas can run intothe roadway, too. Good call Charlie.

We left on June 10 for our trek across country to Alabama viaIowa for my 7th Marine Corps reunion. That song JohnnyCash does “I’ve Been Everywhere” – we can relate. We weretreated to a nice surprise going over Donner Summit. I saw agroup(s) of Gold Wings coming up on us. I asked Patti tochange the CB channel to 1 and I got the ride leader on the air– how cool is that! We met them at the rest stop and formallyintroduced ourselves. They were combined chapters on a ridethat would take them over all 5 passes that day – whew. One

of the chapters was Antioch. They said two of our memberswere at their meeting – I think Danny and Roger. It was likeol’ home week with them. It was like being with our family. That experience, along with our involvement with Chapter Min Alabama shows us that GWRRA folks are like family.

While traveling, we always take special note of motorcyclistson the roadways. It is always good to see them and share thespirit of the ride even though we are not on a bike. We like tonotice the types of bikes and everything about them. Ofcourse, we get most excited when seeing GWs. Patti hasalways noticed trikes and pointed them out to me. Now thatshe knows she can drive one, it is even more so. One thingwe did notice is that there seems to be a lot more trikes on theroad. About 1/3rd of the bikes we saw were trikes – youngfolks too!

The other thing we noticed while checking out the bikes waswhat folks were wearing on their ride. We had verycomfortable weather across country, sometimes cool. Thelast day or two it got pretty warm. Even in the cooler temps, most riders we saw did not have helmets or any protectivegear. I am always surprised, and we’ve seen this before. Iwas reminded of a discussion with some folks in Chapter M –believe me, it gets hot and humid here in Alabama. We weretalking about helmets and agreed that putting on our helmet isjust as automatic as putting on a seatbelt when we drive a car.It is incomprehensible to ride a bike without one. So, eventhough we’ve seen it before, it is still surprising to see bikerstrekking along a 70 mph+ in just t-shirts and shorts. Oy.

Speaking of safety, I read with interest Rocky’s success ingetting Doc Wong to come to one of our meetings and do apresentation. Good job Rock! I am both pleased and proudthat CA2S is continuing to evolve with a solid focus on safetyand education. Fun, well we always have that!

Our plans have us traveling to Florida on July 6th. We will bethere for a couple of weeks, and then back home to SweetHome Alabama for the duration. One thing that makestraveling a bit more pleasant this side of the Mason DixonLine it the price of gas. Check out the photo below.

All y’all have a wonderful 4th of July and get those flags outto commemorate the great country we are so blessed to livein.

Lessons to RememberAs experienced as we think we are as riders, there are alwaysthose moments when we could have done better if we had keptthe items below in mind during our “wind therapy” sessions.Killer Corner-Heading home from a week-end trip and taking advantage ofthe sunny weather, you want to add a few enjoyable miles toyour adventure by exploring an S-shaped road that parallelsthe freeway. You’re not familiar with this road, but thepavement is smooth and dry, and it curves through the treeswith a nice rhythm that encourages you to ride briskly. At thefaster pace and reduced sight distance, you know the risksincrease, so you scrutinize the road for wild deer or surfacehazards, and practice good cornering techniques. But after a half hour of fun, you are halfway around a blindright turn when you realize it turns even tighter than you hadexpected. Unlike the hundred other predictable corners you’vejust ridden, this right-hander tightens up into a decreasingradius and points back up a steep switchback. You try to leanmore, but with the bike arcing rapidly toward the oppositeshoulder, you panic, roll off the throttle, and slam on thebrakes. Both tires slide out, the bike crashes on its side, andyou slide off into the ditch in a shower of gravel. You aren’thurt, but your bike will require expensive repairs. The next time you want to do some exploring, keep inmind that most backroads have at least one killer corner, perhaps with an unexpected sharp curve just on the otherside of a hill, or an off-camber slant, or a decreasingradius. It is wise to look for wild animals and surfacehazards, but on an unfamiliar road, it’s important toquickly adjust your speed to your sight distance.Approaching a blind turn, you should immediately slowdown until you can see the rest of the curve. If you realize you are going too fast and heading too widefor a turn, the best tactic is to maintain a steady throttle tomaximize traction and ground clearance, focus on whereyou want the bike to go, and push harder on the low gripto lean over to maximum limits of your machine. On drypavement, most bikes are capable of turning tighter thantheir riders realize.Parking Lot DartersYou’ve done some shopping at the mall, and now you’releaving the parking lot. Riding down the lane between parkedcars, you scan your mirrors to check for tailgaters, watchcarefully for pedestrians who might jump out of their cars, andlook for back-up lights that warn of someone about to reverse. You understand that parking lot intersections are just asdangerous as street corners, so you check out the cross traffic

Safety Corner, byRocky Fagundes ahead, and plan to make a full stop when you get there.

But before you reach the end of the row, a car suddenlydarts out from behind a van. With barely 2 secondsbefore impact, there isn’t time to apply the brakes. Youpush to swerve out of the way of the darter, but can’tstop in time to avoid a glancing blow off the bumper ofa parked car. The darter roars off. Luckily, you sufferfrom only abrasions and bruises, but you’re left withthe responsibility for the collision.Since private parking lots are not part of the publicstreets, there’s no police enforcement for ignoringlane markings or signs. Therefore, many driversdon’t obey street-traffic rules in large parking lots. Not only is it wise to watch for pedestrians andbacking cars, but you should also predict the hazardof vehicles darting through empty parking spaces. When riding through parking lots, always scan theadjacent lanes and be prepared to make a quickstop by keeping your speed down. Also, shortenyour stopping distance by covering the front brake.

DD Review,

Well, this has been a fast and interesting month startingout with the Region F Convention in St. George. Californiashowed up with over 200 members, we really know how toset the standard for participation.

CA-1D held their Chapter Rally early in the month, andthough everything started out bad for Tim and the DogPound, they pulled off a great event as they always do. Greatjob guys, we know your heart was in it.

The next weekend, CA-2J of Antioch, CA held their firstRally in many years, and I must admit they still know how todo it. From all accounts their ride was well planned andsecond to none. They had too much food, and enough doorprizes for everyone to win something. While I didn’t wintheir set of tires this time, I did win a $150.00 gift card, sothat will cover the cost of a front tire when I need it.

By the time this newsletter airs, CA-2N will have hostedtheir annual event up in Sonora, and if you have ever attendedone of their Rally’s, you know it’s one of the most fun in thestate. Games & prizes & food - Oh my!!!

For all of you heading east to attend Wing Ding, we wishyou a fun safe ride. Be sure to sign up to help Region Fwelcome everyone to Ft. Wayne, it’s a great way to enjoy theevent from the inside.

One last parting thought before I let you go, there is only 2months left until the California District Convention, so don’tforget to get your hotel reservations and ConventionRegistration in soon. There are still some great dealsavailable, especially the two bedroom Condo’s. Call (800)MAMMOTH and ask for the “Village Lodge - Fall GoldwingRally”, or check out our web site at www.gwrra-ca.org fordetails.

District Director’s MessageUntil next time, “Hang on – we’re going for a ride”.

All,

For those who missed going on last Saturday's after-chapter-ride to Carmel Valley led by Ron Green, I'll share alittle about the ride. It was good timing that Rodger provide a briefing during our meeting regarding heatexhaustion. As we headed down to Gilroy on Saturday morning it was really heating up. Ron did another excellentjob of navigating us through the twisty backroads and we avoided the heat for the most part. We stopped for lunch atthe Flat Iron in Carmel Valley around 2 pm and had a nice meal there. The Flat Iron is an eccletic bar/restaurant andthe sort of place where, if you wore your new bluejeans you just might be overdressed (attached are a few photos).Kathryn and I left the group on the ride back to buy Abalone at the Commercial Pier in Montery, but darn it, theyclosed early and again we went home empty handed. On the way back we decided to go the quick way takingHWY156 and that was a big mistake as we ended up riding in +100 degrees of unrelenting heat until we got close toSan Jose. I kept checking myself for the early signs of heat exhaustion, but I was fine, even though a bitunconfortable. Anyway, thanks to all who joined us on the outting for another nice Ride-eat-and-Ride adventure.

Cheers!!!Bill the Historian

Patti’s corner:

Sal and I headed out on the VTX yesterday for a RTE. What’s a RTE, you might ask? Down here inAlabama, a RTE is a “Ride To Eat”. We headed off to a place in Notasulga, Alabama about 50 milesaway… Elmer’s Restaurant. Yep, you got the name right. Elmer’s is known for their hamburgers… watchout JJ’s. At Elmer’s, you can order a very large hamburger with French fries for $5.59. You can’t beatthe Alabama prices or the fresh ground meat. And, it’s one of the best hamburgers I have ever had. JJ’s,Harris Ranch can’t compete with Elmer’s in my book.

When riding here in Alabama, we have heat and we have humidity. Yesterday wasn’t bad at about 92degrees and about 70% humidity. The saying that I learned from Jim Jackson, affectionately known as“JJ” (lifetime member and ride leader of GWRRA Chapter AL-M) is “all the gear, all the time.” It doesn’tmatter how hot it gets, he still wears all his gear all the time. A true inspiration. Heat however, adjust thetime of day and the length of the ride….hence, RTE… the ride is to go somewhere for lunch. Every RTEgoes to some small locally owned restaurant and then, back through some beautiful two lane country roads. It is amazing how everyone here knows everyone – it is like one huge family, and they treat you that way.Other times of the year may involve longer rides when the weather isn’t quite as brutal.

Bill Hubbs makes a good point. It is always important to keep hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion. It isimportant to replace the fluids that your body loses through sweating. Heat exhaustion is a dangerouscondition and you must take steps to remain as cool as possible.

No matter where your ride, the summer heat is here and every precaution should be taken to take care ofyour self when riding.

Happy and safe riding this summer – that’s me at PLP!!!!Patti

I have quit working on cars and bikes and am ready to get rid of some nice tools and a Snap-On Box. There is a sevendrawer Roll-Away with a Five drawer Top Box with seven 4 inch wide drawers on the right side. There is a 10"X18"side cabinet that hangs on one side of the Roll-Away. There are many Snap-On, Craftsman and other tools that fill thetool box. Many dollars have been spent and good care taken of the this. I am asking $1,700.00 for everything. I do notwant to split things up so it all has to go together. A great way for someone who might be thinking of buying tools andto save a couple thousand dollars. Call me at (408) 252-7777 or (408) 655-7630. Virg
