A Nintendo Entertainment System port of Silent Service developed by Rare waspublished in 1989 by Konami in Europe and by Konamis Ultra Games subsidiary in North America. The followup game, Silent Service II, was released in 1990.The games realism was hampered by thesimulations inability to handle more than four projectiles at a time. This was particularlytroublesome when battling multiple destroyers, since the submarine would not be able to fire if fourtorpedoes were already in the water.

Sid Meier described a number of key factors that influenced the design of the game The size of thetheater, the variety of tactical situations, and evolving technology, such as the use of surface radarand torpedoes that did or did not leave trails of bubbles on the surface—only simulations set aftertheir reallife introduction had access to them.Retrieved 20170810. DB 5.0 out of 5stars This was my first sub sim and I played it constantly and as hard as it may be to believe still playit occasionally, I still have 2 working C64s. Easily one of the best games made for the C64. Spentmany a late night with no lights glued to the tiny monitor. No other games give you the same feelingas a sub sim. For those looking for a more current sub sim I recommend the Silent Hunter series, myfavorite is Silent Hunter 3. Something went wrong. All Rights Reserved. Imonly 20 Until SH3 came along, but they didnt put in wolf packs. Didnt play any for a long time until Ifound Silent Hunter 2 on a games store shelf. Since then ive grabbed Enigma Rising tide, SH3 andnow SH4. Not much of a fan of modern war so I havent bothered with some of the titles likeDangerous Waters. I got frustrated with the torpedo aiming system though, so I spent most of mytime in destroyers.I used to spend hours playing it. My teenage imagination more than made up forthe basic graphics and game play. I might post on the Firaxis forums that Sid should do a sub simnext as there was a poll on their of what he should do after railroads i voted for redoing colonisationlol Then i got to Wolfpack on a 286 PC. Later Aces of the Deep from Dynamix, 688 Attack submarinefrom the Janes edition. Then SH3 and 4 Had a 40MB HD too. So there! The graphics were kindalowres and blocky. It was around the time of other bitmapped 3D engines like Wing Commander, etc. It wasnt a bad game for the time, as I recall.Had a 40MB HD too. So there! Yep, me too. I played688 Attack Sub with DOS mouse support As far as pc sub sims, Silent Hunter 1, which I was justplaying last night I used to take on and beat destroyers on the surface just using the deck gun. C64Me, too. Then I read Clear the Bridge, as recommended in that games manual and have been hookedsince. Ran SSII on my Amiga and then finally got SH1 in the late 90s been playing THAT off and onever since. Till now. Mine was 688 Attack Sub.Yeah I know, a console sub sim, pretty lame, huh. I hated the copyprotection that stoppedthe game as you approached your base and asked you to look something up in the book what a greatway to lessen the immersion factor. Still, a sweet sim. One thing I liked about GunShip and

Microprose games in general was if you failed, you didnt tend to blame the game you knew whereyou went wrong. It was YOUR fault for looking at the TV while flying napeoftheearth, or hitcountermeasures too late etc. Never had a problem with 99% hull damage that you can only see byanalyzing the savefiles. I think I heard of that bug easter egg but i dont remember trying it. I enjoyedGunship on my ZX Spectrum for many years My first subsim was Silent Service Speccy version, mysecond was Silent Hunter III! Red Storm Rising A lot changed in 20 years, no Red Storm Rising Heckyeah!

I played it again recently via DOSbox not QUITE as good graphics as the Amiga version I used toplay I loved those wireguided MK48s Id send them away from my boat a ways and then steer themtowards the target from a different direction to confuse them. Railroad Tycoon, anyone I bet theywere. In all my years of gaming it was almost always on a PC of some sort. Im not against consolesbut didnt have the cash when I was younger and didnt have the interest when I got older. I justrecently bought my FIRST console a Wii. Multiplayer tennis and bowling are GREAT. My old high school friend, Joe, had posted something to my Facebook wall and, as I recall, a distinctthought of “Now what’s this nonsense going to be” meandered through my brain as I exited the caron that balmy, latesummer evening. We had Biology together and bonded over our mutual love ofvideo games, especially ones that could be copied or traded on the Commodore 64. So, my firstthought was that this was going to be some poll, meme, or article proving some point that he mademonths ago and I had long since forgotten about. It was my handwriting for sure. A yellowing, timeworn instruction manual and keyboard overlay lurked behind the disk. Meier and MicroProsemade some of the greatest games of the 8bit computer era F15 Strike Eagle, Silent Service, AirborneRanger, and Pirates. While Meier himself did some programming on Gunship, it was his colleagues,Andy Hollis and Arnold Hendrick, who did the majority of the legwork on the title. It also received aplethora of fivestar ratings from the computer magazines and video game press of the time. In otherwords, it was as good as a computer simulation game of that era could get—it kicked much ass andtook many names. The overall experience is complicated hence the overlay and thick manual but fun.It takes some doing just to get the whirlybird off the damn ground, but that’s just the way I wantedmy games back then. I could always go for some quick, arcade action with a game of Jumpman,Commando, or Kung Fu Master, but computer games, even at that time, offered a layer complexitythat arcades and home consoles just could not match. That’s not to say that Gunship couldn’t bepulsepounding, especially when a Mi24 Hind attack helicopter the Russian equivalent to the AH64AApache; John Rambo takes out one of these bad boys with a rocket launcher in Rambo II is bearingdown on you with all guns blazing.

Page 10: C64 silent service manual

The teacher of that class was one of the best and most laid back I’ve ever had, both hystericallyfunny and infinitely informative. His name was Mr. Birzes, and he wasn’t so much your teacher as hewas your big brother or cooldude uncle. He taught Biology the way John Keating taught English inDead Poets Society, sans the whole “standingonthedeskbecauseI’msodifferent” nonsense. I only toldtwo people about this incident, one of which was Joe because he sat directly across from me andsomehow knew something was up. Joe immediately spread the story like wildfire, and lo and behold, before the end of the day I was summoned to Mr. Birzes classroom where I was gently admonishedto keep my stupid mouth shut before he got fired. Mr. Birzes wasn’t the type of teacher to read somedumb kid the riot act and I, for one, appreciated that. Because of all this, Joe became obsessed withthe game, especially after learning the wonky history with Mr. Birzes and I, and pestered me until Ilent it to him. Too similar in too many ways to be very close, let alone best, friends, we still had anappreciation for one another. It was kind of a “game recognizes game” situation before that waseven a thing. I distinctly recall him and me getting into a shoving match that came within an inch ofactually throwing punches in the hallway by our lockers one day, which may or may not have beenfallout of the Gunship hostage situation. I don’t exactly remember why it happened, just that it did. Iwas good at Biology—that subject made perfect sense to me—but the fundamental concepts ofChemistry just could not penetrate my feeble brain, mostly because of the dense mathematicalformulas involved to accomplish the most basic of goals. Some things that should not have beenforgotten were lost. History became legend. So, over the course of the next month, Joe and Iexchanged several terse emails and texts which became akin to a passiveaggressive game of cat andmouse.

We talked of grabbing a beer a couple times in the hopes of exchanging the game that way, but itnever panned out for whatever reason. And, once again, that awful feeling of being a 16yearolddipshit who was getting strung along creeped into my muchaggrieved psyche. That’s when I threwup the proverbial Hail Mary I texted Joe my address, asking him to just simply drop the game in themail. He chirped back with a simple “OK,” and I fully expected the topic to just die on the vine onceagain. My Gollumesque tendencies with this situation would just have to learn to “hang on tightlyand let go lightly” without pitching myself into the river of liquidhot magma known asDisappointment. It was his birthday, and I was taking them out for impossibly large bowls of pho tocelebrate. My eyes were immediately drawn to it like a ravenous hawk hunting a frightened rabbitscampering through the underbrush. My addled brain screamed at me I neeeeeeeeds it! We chattedabout the game, our jobs, and our respective relationship issues before my ofttardy son finallyarrived, but it was a good thing that he was late that night; it gave Joe and I a chance to catch up, asif the universe had ordained it to be so. That’s totally radder than dissecting some stupid frog, isn’t itAfter all, where do you think the screenshots and video clip came from Retro computers andhardware are more finicky than your grandma’s asshole cat who lives under the bed, so it took someactual doing and some actual cash forked over at garage sales and on eBay to get the game up andrunning. And by doing, I mean taking apart 30plusyearold disk drives and cleaning crusty driveheads with Qtips and alcohol. Hell, I’m not the 8Bit Guy, but then again, who is It chugs along atmaybe 10 to 12 frames per second on the C64. Not unplayable, but certainly noticeable to someonewho is now accustomed to the latest and greatest of what the current generation of gaming has tooffer.

It’s funny, though, browsing through the manual once again, because it’s clear by all the notes andcoordinates I scribbled down on the nowyellowing pages that I legitimately played the crap out ofthis title back in the day. And, regardless of all the rigmarole I had to go through to get here, it’squite wonderful to have Gunship back in my possession once again. He’s been engrossed by videogames since a little ol’ game called Pong came on the scene in the early ’70s. Trademarks belong totheir respective owners.
