Relevance: The works comprise of the civils elements involved with the erection of a wind turbine: • Construction of a reinforced concrete base to be formed in two sections incorporating the installation of anchor bolts. • Construction of 400m of access track 3.5m wide including a crane base using geotextile and granular material. • Construction of a reinforced concrete base to accommodate a transformer unit. • Excavate approximately 500m of trench to receive electric cables and ducts. Challenges Met / Solutions Provided: The access road was built to extremely onerous standards in terms of horizontal and vertical alignment in order to accommodate turbine delivery arrangements. The road was constructed on a peaty soil which was stripped and overlaid with compacted imported granular subbase. This subbase was laid on a geotextile membrane which

Principal Contractor: Jones Brothers (Henllan) Ltd Design Responsibility: Client Client: MDA Renewables Ltd Description / Key Delivery Features: The work entailed constructing a new 3.5m wide access track and
reinforced concrete turbine and crane base within an exposed and isolated, barren rugged mountainous site.
Relevance: The works comprise of the civils elements involved with the erection
of a wind turbine:-‐ • Construction of a reinforced concrete base to be formed in
two sections incorporating the installation of anchor bolts. • Construction of 400m of access track 3.5m wide including a
crane base using geotextile and granular material. • Construction of a reinforced concrete base to accommodate
a transformer unit.
• Excavate approximately 500m of trench to receive electric cables and ducts.
Challenges Met / Solutions Provided: The access road was built to extremely onerous standards in terms
of horizontal and vertical alignment in order to accommodate turbine delivery arrangements. The road was constructed on a peaty soil which was stripped and overlaid with compacted imported granular sub-‐base. This sub-‐base was laid on a geotextile membrane which

improved structural integrity and facilitated drainage. The heavy plant deployed included two 20 tonne 360 excavators, a
D6 bulldozer with a 6 way blade and a twin drum vibrating roller. The two excavators were used to undertake the preparatory earthwork operations to establish road formation levels. The imported sub-‐base was spread from the entrance into the turbine site itself using the D6 bulldozer with a vibrating roller following on to provide the compaction levels required. CBR penetration tests were undertaken to evaluate the mechanical strength of road subgrades and base-‐courses. Drainage diversions were also undertaken to ensure the integrity of existing open ditches was not compromised.
The site itself was extremely exposed and appropriate site welfare
facilities were provided to our workforce. These facilities were made available to the turbine installation contract following completion of the enabling works. The contract was overseen by Mott MacDonald who both designed and project managed the contract.
Principal Supply Chain Partners: Most work was undertaken by Jones Brothers (Henllan) Ltd internal labour and equipment resources; however, subcontracted trades included:
Noble Civil Engineering Formwork / Reinforcement J A Smith Construction Stonemasonry Robert George Fencing All subcontractors were prequalified following a thorough vetting
process and included on our Approved Supply Chain Database. All were locally based and were required to be involved in the preparation of the programme to ensure that there was an efficient deployment of resources and ownership of the overall programme.
