VOLUME MMXIV, ISSUE 3 2014 CONNECTION Introducing Memory Care Left to Right: Briana, John, Stephanie, Brenda T H A N K Y O U The delightful garden that is an integral part of the Memory Care wing was graciously provided by The McKeown Foundation, which promotes Alzheimer’s Disease care, research and education. Christ’s Home is celebrating the first anniversary of Shepherd’s Way, our new healthcare and independent living facility on the Retirement Community campus. This beautiful and spacious building contains 24 Independent Living apartments with a bistro and social hall. It also features 90 private rooms to support 48 skilled nursing residents, 30 personal care residents, and 12 memory care residents. When Christ’s Home initiated care for senior adults in 1923, the “Home for The Aged” as it was called, we focused on the basics of providing small bed rooms, shared bathroom facilities, and modest indoor space for dining and activities. Today we offer a full range of services that can be accessed by members of the community at large, such as post hospitalization rehabilitation and outpatient occupational and physical therapy. A key achievement that came along with building Shepherd’s Way was the addition of the 12 Memory Care rooms, including a beautiful and secure garden area for our residents to enjoy personally, and with family and friends. Prior to August, 2013, when residents developed the need for a higher level of care because of increased dementia issues, their families were faced with the difficulty of relocating their loved one, and the trauma that went along with transferring to a new facility. By introducing care for the needs of individuals that are experiencing various forms of memory loss, Christ’s Home presents a new area of service to families and their loved ones who are navigating this period in life. John Bryant, CEO of Christ’s Home, convened a group of direct care staff to talk about this expanded provision of our senior care program to assess the first year of operation. Included in the discussion was Brenda Mast, Assistant Healthcare Administrator, who was tasked with bringing the Memory Care wing on line. This involved selecting qualified and dedicated members of our existing staff to lead the wing, along with coordinating the various support services. We also needed to clearly communicate the availability of these new services to our residents, their families, and the surrounding community. Brenda knew how important it would be to the success of the Memory Care wing to place mission driven staff there at the start to translate the high standards of care we hold to at Christ’s Home. Even though it meant a significant change in her personal life by shifting from evening to daytime hours, Briana Staszeski, (LPN) gladly accepted the move to Memory Care where she is very happy in her lead role. Briana said, “we struggled a little at the start to get that very ‘person centered’ care we wanted to achieve, but I believe we’ve really gotten it, the residents are very happy.” Stephanie Hauser, Nurses Aide, with prior Continued on page 2

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4
Good Stuff Thrift (GST), with locations in Doylestown and Fairless Hills, has made its first contribution of $4,000 to the children’s program of Christ’s Home on July 10, 2014. We are assisting them with the announcement of a recently added program that incorporates people hosting one day neighborhood collections at their homes.
You simply distribute a flyer to your neighbors with information of what GST accepts, and GST sends out staff with a truck to pick up the donated items at a prearranged time. If you are interested in hosting a pickup in your neighborhood, please contact Colleen at 215-956-1885 or by email at [email protected].
Christ’s Home expresses our thanks to GST for their contribution and commitment to helping children.

Christmas Information If you, your church or an organization you belong to are interested in supporting the children at Christmas this year, please contact one of our staff below for information between October 1 – November 15, 2013.
We will be able to provide you with information on how you can support the children and cottages this Christmas, including gift drop-off times and locations. Thank you for your generous spirit and display of kindness towards the children now and throughout the year!
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must
help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is
more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35
