Dear members and friends,In times of crisis we reach for a common thread – something to hold on to that’s familiar, that

gives us strength, and that empowers us to understand the situation and move forward.

As a public radio listener, you are well aware of the incredible economic issues we have faced

over the past year, and the changes that resulted here in our community and around the world.

Few individuals and businesses escaped the negative impact of the market collapse, reduced

access to credit and the exposure of remarkably risky investment schemes that threatened the

viability of our economic system.

Through it all, KMUW and public radio took a leadership position in reporting the news of the

day and in analyzing the factors that led to the economic crisis. KMUW continued to focus on

its mission to remain a trusted source of local, national and world news.

Even when the economy was unraveling last fall, KMUW was making plans to fulfill our mis-

sion of community service through a variety of on-air program initiatives and off-air events.

In 2009 KMUW celebrated its 60th anniversary by hosting a visit from NPR’s Cokie Roberts in

April, featuring her during our on-air fundraiser and in several community events. We started

our “60 Stories” series of feature reports and listener stories to celebrate the history of our

community. We made arrangements to host StoryCorps here in Wichita so you could add your

stories to that national storytelling initiative.

And, even as we heard of job cuts, investment losses and predictions of a long financial reces-

sion, you proved KMUW’s importance to the Wichita area by remaining a loyal listening audi-

ence and by increasing your financial support of the station. In fact, individual membership

contributions and business support increased. Once again, KMUW was cited in the Winter

2009 RRC listener survey of the Top 30 public stations nationwide with a 20th place ranking

for our share of the average quarter hour audience. That’s a direct reflection of the value and

importance you and our other listeners find in KMUW.

Your trust in us, along with your moral and financial support gives us the confidence to envi-

sion the future and continue our service to the community. Thanks for your continued com-

mitment to Wichita Public Radio.

Sincerely,

Mark McCainGeneral Manager

60 years. KMUW has been on your radio since April 26, 1949. The unique collaboration with individual and business members and KMUW has built quality programming that is a valued public service to our communities.

To celebrate 60 years, KMUW brought NPR senior news analyst and New York Times bestselling author, Cokie Roberts to Wichita for a series of events on April 22-23. A women’s tea co-sponsored by WSU’s Women Studies was the first event followed by a VIP reception and a sold-out public presentation at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex. Ms. Roberts then helped with the pledge drive by pitching on-air. She concluded her second visit to Wichita in an interview with Provost Gary Miller that was produced as a Wichita State and the World and televised on local cable channel 13. Events sponsors were Scholfield Honda, Beards Floral, Larkspur Restaurant, Start-Thinking, Water-mark Books & Café, Don and Lora Berry, Rex and Denise Irwin, Grace Hill Winery, Jon and Kelly Callen, and Bradley Paper.

The celebration continued with Have Our Cake And Eat It Too party at CityArts on May 28, Final Friday. This was held in connection with the Arts Council’s 1st Sculpture WalkAbout. Sponsors were CityArts, Arts Council, Larkspur Restaurant and Bradley Paper.

Not satisfied with only one party, a second was held July 31, the 2nd an-nual Fill Your Mug at Artworks. Freddy’s Frozen Custard provided the frozen custard; Richard and Karen Crowson with Phil Burress provided the music.

Rain prevented the third party, a collaboration with Ulrich Museum of Art and KMUW for an outdoor concert featuring Notes/Scraps, Ryan Windham and Spirit of the Stairs. Hopes are to re-schedule next spring.

Throughout the year, community members have been contributing to 60 Stories via the website. Stories, both big and small, have been added. This feature will be available on an ongoing basis, so submit your story. Some idea starters in no particular order: The Big Ditch, Kellogg Saga, White Castle/Kings X, Cero’s Candy, Big Dog Motorcycles, 1991 tornado, Tripodal, Operation Rescue, Herman Hill Riots, Final Fridays, WSU football, Wichita Music Theatre, magazines and newspapers, Carlos O’Kelly’s, Santa and Toy Boy, School De-segregation, Turnpike, coffee shops, bookstores, East/West Divide, Immigrations, 81 Speed-way, and the story of the guy who always ate breakfast at the corner diner. There are way too many to mention here. You tell us. Send us your stories. Tell us what makes Kansans the incredible people we are.

To complete a special year, KMUW brought StoryCorps to Wichita. Sponsored by National Public Radio and affiliated with the Library of Congress, StoryCorps was established to create an oral history of regular citizens, allowing everyday people to preserve personal stories

for their own families, and for future generations to hear. StoryCorps was in Wichita October 19- November 15, 2009. At the end of each 60-minute ses-sion, participants received a CD of the interview. A second copy became part of an archive housed at the Library of Congress. Placement in the Library will make it possible for the great-great-great grandchildren of participants to listen to high quality recordings of their ancestors’ voices and stories. It will also serve as a valuable resource to histori-ans, presenting a “bottom-up” history of life as it was lived in the early years of the 21st century.

A new project was piloted in August and again in October of 2009 called Music Tastings. Plans are to begin a series of Tastings in January 2010. Music Tastings feature an aficionado of a selected genre of music or aspect of the music industry who will share his/her expertise with a small group in a casual setting.

Members Step Up

The people of South-Central KS stepped up to say civil and in-depth news as well as quality unique music programming are valuable to our communities. This was sub-stantiated when KMUW members supported Wichita Public Radio’s Fall 2008 campaign which included a pre-drive incentive – KMUW joined with Breakthrough Club and Play It Again Sports East to supply exercise equipment for the clients of Breakthrough. Each pledge generated $5.00 in value in fit-ness equipment. Also each early pledge was placed in a drawing for one of three donated Audio HD/ipod Radios.

The Fall 2008 on-air drive incentive was provided by Hatman Jack’s, who provided 400 caps and gloves for Wichita school children. These were distrib-uted through Operation School Bell.

Spring 2009 campaign’s pre-drive incentive was a col-laboration between Brady Nursery and City of Wichita Parks. Brady added 5% to each pledge to raise $4,000 in trees for Wichita parks.

Spring 2009 on-air drive was a drawing for one of three donated Polk Audio radios during Prairie Home

Companion’s three airings.

Fall 2009’s pre-drive matched pledges with Old Town Farm-

ers’ Market’s donation of 5 lbs of fresh produce to the Kansas Food Bank. This resulted in 767 pledges and 3,835 lbs of food. On-air drive joined the Orpheum Theater contributing 3 sets of year-long passes and a return of Hatman Jack’s caps and gloves match.

Equipment Upgrades/Engineering & Operational Activities• Remodeled 2 production studios and control room with new motorized desks and Axia Consoles.• Added Icecast to streaming server and changed webstreams to mp3 format to make the streams more cross- platform than the previous Windows media streams.• 35kw Onan Cummins standby generator and auto transfer switch installed at Blake Hall. Generators at studio and transmitter have saved us from over a dozen outages that would have totaled over 20 hours of off air time.• New online UPS installed at studios to bridge transfers to generator, and allow online battery maintenance.• Moved record library to Pledge room and rebuilt shelving. Remodeled record library into the News room, remodeled News room into WRRS studios with Live Reading Room, Recording Room, Control Room, and Office. Moved WRRS operations to Blake Hall at the end of March.• Installed bandpass filter and changed polarity on STL to reduce interference from NWS radar.• Hot standby switching between exciters at transmitter site configured.• Energy usage at new transmitter site is approximately 30% less than previous site even though we are now running two transmitters.• Anton software developed to catch missing audio files in automation before a problem is aired.• Upgraded cables and equipment connections throughout WRRS Studios.• Dismantled and vacated old WRRS Studios at Hughes Metropolitan Complex at the end of June.

A SALUTE TO VOLUNTEERS . . . for KMUW and WRRS

Volunteers are a valuable commodity and very much

appreciated at KMUW and WRRS. Without these re-

sources, both of our services would be very limited.

Volunteers enable Wichita Public Radio to conduct on-

air membership drives. They answer pledge phones

during our drives and collect important data, regarding

the amount of support, whether you’re choosing any

premiums or dropping by the station to pay and pick

up. Our volunteers spend several hours with us during

each spring and fall drive. We also depend on other vol-

unteers who assist KMUW at the microphone, asking for

your support during our fundraising times, or issuing

their corporate challenge.

Since 2004, a very special group of volunteers--KMUW

Airheads—have attended our annual media sponsored

arts and cultural events, and distributed literature to

inform the community about Wichita Public Radio, and

provide information about our community partners.

To be eligible to become an “Airhead,” you must have

participated in at least two pledge drives and be familiar

with our programming. Also, you must be mentored for

a period of time by a seasoned Airhead.

Community volunteers also serve as readers for our

Wichita Radio Reading Service for the print handi-

capped. WRRS broadcasts daily readings of newspa-

pers, other periodicals, and novels to this special audi-

ence who have fix-tuned receivers which are loaned to

qualified individuals and/or groups.

If you are interested in more information concerning

volunteering opportunities at KMUW and/or WRRS,

please contact Pat Hayes at 316.978.6789.

- Pat Hayes, Volunteer and Listener Services Coordinator

KMUW and WRRS:Consolidation of Resources

In early April 2009, the Wichita Radio Reading Service was relocated from the Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex at 29th & N. Oliver and welcomed into space at KMUW, 3317 E. 17th St. N. This move enabled the sta-tion to combine personnel and streamline operations for WRRS. It also has allowed Director of Engineering Jon Cyphers, who made this transition possible, to trouble-shoot both operations more effectively and efficiently.

WRRS has over 50 community volunteers who come and go throughout each week to read the daily Wichita Eagle, USA Today, and other periodicals to our blind and print handicapped listeners. A fixed-tuned receiver is required for listening to the reading service. Receiv-ers are on loan to qualified individuals, nursing homes, senior centers, etc. for as long as needed. This invaluable service has been staffed and financially supported by KMUW and WSU since 1975.

Arts and Culture Support

KMUW, as a public service of WSU to the community, supports the arts and culture through media sponsor-ships. These events and series are given on-air an-nouncements, a presence on our sponsorship tables, and included in our on-line event calendar. Our volunteer group, The Airheads, host the KMUW event tables.

Fiscal year 2009 was an especially challenging time for KMUW leadership as they proactively sought ways to reduce expenses through staffing and program-ming changes, as well as finding ways to work more efficiently. Doing so enables the valuable broadcasting services for both . . . KMUW and the Wichita Radio Reading Service . . . to maintain their high quality service to the community.

I just wanted to thank Chris Heim for her lovely tribute to John Martyn. The combination of knowl-edgeable music aesthetes like Chris Heim and your station’s programming ethic, which allows for her programming freedom, make this type of rare broadcast possible. Very Nice. Thank you, S. J.

KMUW’s primary funding source is listener support in the form of memberships and underwriting, followed by di-rect support from Wichita State University. In 2009 listener support totaled $720,577, an increase of 10% over FY2008. Funding received directly from WSU decreased by 5% to $283,132.

Memberships totaled $414,687, an increase of 3.2% ($401,693, - FY2008)

Underwriting totaled $305,890, an increase of 21% ($252,619 - FY2008)

KMUW’s two largest expenses were salaries and benefits which totaled $743,659, an increase of 7.65% ($690,750), and outside programming fees of $313,273. KMUW purchases its programming from three primary and several indepen-dent providers:

National Public Radio - $198,185, 0.85% increase

Your Gift That Gives BackTo move beyond our annual membership drives and locate more permanent sources of financial support, the legacy of KMUW begins with you, our donors. Create your legacy of giving by including KMUW in your will, trust, or gen-eral estate plans. The next time you sit with your financial advisors to discuss gifts to family and friends made through your will, consider including a bequest to KMUW. There are several types of bequests that may be made through your estate. In a Specific Bequest, the recipient receives a specific dollar amount, a specific piece of property, or a stated percentage of the estate. This is one of the most popular forms of bequests. A Residuary Bequest states the recipient will receive all or a stated percentage of an estate after distribution of specific bequests to family and payment of debts, taxes, and expenses. Contingent Bequests state the recipient would receive part of all of the estate under certain specified circumstances. These and all estate planning options, including wills and trusts, should be carefully discussed with your financial planner.News & Soulsations producer Carla Eckels

Membership Made Easy

Supporting KMUW is easy when you become a Sustaining Member (Continu-ing monthly payments) or Installment Member (Finite monthly payments). You designate the monthly contribu-tion amount to be transferred from your checking, savings, or credit card account to KMUW.

1. Go to our website: www.kmuw.org and select JOIN. Decide how much you want to contribute to KMUW and for how many months; select method of payment and whether you wish to select premiums.

2. A Sustaining Plan by bank draft is in effect until you contact KMUW to stop the plan. A sustaining plan by credit card is in effect until your credit card expires or until you contact us to stop the plan.

3. In an Installment Plan, you decide how many months your contribution is to be divided into and ends when the last installment is made. Note: If you use a credit card to make monthly pay-ments, your plan will be in place until the plan is paid or until the credit card expires.

4. Sit back and relax. Your installment will be automatically deducted with a record of each transaction appearing on your bank/ credit union statement. Premiums are available at the pledging level. See the selection on the website. Please contact us on the anniversary of your pledge if you are interested in receiving premiums.
