FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey

Kia ora koutou katoa, At MMI we do not have rules, we have our ‘Coastal Values.’ Our three Coastal Values are:

Respect, Whakahi, Pride, Whakaute and Learner Akonga.

Our staff teach the Coastal Values, as expectations for our learning and behaviour, in all settings. Settings include the classroom, the playground, travelling home, assemblies etc.

On the whole we have had a positive start, but there are some expectations that we are working on.

Travelsafe: Unfortunately, there is some unpredictable and silly behaviour occurring while students bike, scooter and bus. For many students, this is the first time that they are travelling, unsupervised, to and from school, with their friends. Please talk with your child about being safe, sensible and predictable, as they journey home. It can also be a good idea from time to time to do a sneaky ‘spot check’ on your travelling child. Arrange a family member, friend or neighbour, who can get out and about in our neighbourhood and see what is really going on.

Relationships with others: This is also the first time that the Mount Maunganui and Papamoa community comes together in all of its diversity. Most students have come from one primary school where they have known each other for six years. They know which students are shy. They know who has difficulty managing anger. They know who is confident and who is not. As we come together in a new school environment it is important that we are careful in the way in which we approach others. It is important to be kind and to refrain from name calling and teasing and it is important to keep our hands and feet to ourselves, even when we are being playful and silly, as we do not know how others might respond. This is important learning for all of us as we learn and grow. If your child experiences challenges with friendships, social interactions or even bullying please speak to your child’s teacher in the first instance. Students can also email [email protected].

Student Council: Over the next week, teachers will be selecting students to represent their classes on the student council. Each classroom teacher will make the Councillor selection by the end of week four. This may involve nominations, an application process and input from fellow students.

Learning Conferences: In two weeks’ time, Thursday 5 March, we will have our first Learning Conference Day. Learning Conferences is the first opportunity that you will have to discuss your child, their learning, their attitude and behaviour and how they have settled into school. The conferences take place during the school day and into the evening. These conferences are compulsory. We expect every child to attend their learning conference, in school uniform, with their parent or caregiver. If you are unable to attend the teacher will be contacting you to make an alternative date and time. We expect to have 100% attendance at learning conferences, as we really value whānau involvement in your child’s learning. We also strongly encourage you to make appointments to see your child’s specialist teacher. This is really important as part of your child’s learning and transition to secondary school, where students will have specialist teachers for all subjects. Appointments can also be made to meet with: The senior leadership team: Lisa Morresey, Debbie Howell, Harriet Lennihan - SenCo, Nicola Logan - SenCo, Tania Clarkin - Learning Support, Brett Muir - International Students or Andrew Spraggon - Sports Coordinator. You will have received an email with booking information.

Specialist Fees: Specialist fees (activity payments) are required to cover the costs of optional equipment, experiences and services that are extra to the school’s curriculum obligations. Payment may also be required for curriculum-based activities that involve a “take home” component for the student to keep. Activity fee for 2020 is $30.00 per student.

Back to school: Thank you to mum’s, dads, caregivers and whānau for supporting your children with uniforms, stationery and back to school expenses. We understand how difficult this time of year can be and we appreciate your efforts in ensuring that your children are set up for school and success. Have a wonderful week and enjoy the sunshine. Ma te wa, Whaea Lisa/Ms Morresey

Meet the Specialist Team - 2020

Our Vision:

To provide a range of dynamic opportunities to

help students prepare for future pathways.

Confidence Creativity Collaboration

This year all specialist classes will be run as composite classes. The classes are made up of a mix of students across their syndicate. We are really looking forward to working with your child this year.

Bridget Ward - Digital Technology This year we are implementing the new Digital Technology curriculum. It involves preparing our students to be confident in a transforming digital world. The curriculum is about ensuring students develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities to deal with new problems and opportunities, as they arise. It involves supporting the next generation of influencers, creators and thinkers, to design digital technologies solutions for future issues. I aim to create a programme that exposes the students to a range of digital tools and scaffold their learning so they are able to make connections to other areas of their lives. Contexts within Digital Technology will link strongly to our school-wide inquiry and skills across different curriculum areas.

Charles Gillies-Smith - Hard Materials and Electronics The Hard Materials and Electronics programme being offered this year will provide the students with basic skills in both these areas, as they come up with solutions to the projects we will be working on. These practical skills can provide them with the option to further their studies at college, or may be useful in their day to day lives around the home, with repairs or projects they wish to tackle. An extension programme is offered on Fridays - block 2, to use these skills in practical applications.

Deb Barr - Food Technology/Hangarau Kai This year, we are operating in our wonderful fully refurbished Foods Room. This exciting environment will provide our students with opportunities to learn and practice basic life skills, as well as working within all three strands of the Technology curriculum. The students work with practical activities using literacy and numeracy skills specific to Food Technology. Alongside to this, learning to develop ideas using planning, problem solving and time management skills. The contexts for learning in Food Technology relate to our school-wide inquiry focus, providing a rich learning environment that gives our students opportunities to develop essential trans-disciplinary skills. Morgan Smith - Dance and Drama In Dance and Drama at MMI, our students participate in both Dance and Drama. They build on their movement vocabulary as well as learn to communicate with others effectively, in order to develop ideas into a performance. We explore topics of cultural dance and its history, learn to choreograph effectively, craft improvisation skills, discover playwriting and devised drama, as well as touching on musical theatre and improving our performance skills. Students explore a variety of different contexts and themes that link in with our NZ Curriculum. I aim to see student’s confidence increase over our time spent together and hope the students have fun along the way. Sally Wylie- Visual Arts The Visual Arts programme enables students to experience and explore a range of techniques, processes and media, based on a variety of contexts and themes. They develop their practical knowledge, both three dimensional and two dimensional, along with learning to develop their own ideas based on motivational resources and artists’ works. It is always great to see students gain confidence and be proud of their accomplishments. Christine Pearce - Music While playing various instruments and learning about the elements of music, in particular pitch and rhythm, students benefit in many ways as listed below :- Music helps the brain develop, is fun, teaches them to focus and relieves stress, helps to understand maths and is a form of self-expression. Music can improve social skills and can boost self-confidence. We have a well-stocked classroom full of keyboards, ukuleles, guitars and a wide range of percussion instruments.

Above is an example of some amazing art work done from Saskia Barber in room 2!

CAMP INFORMATION Historically, students have had the option of two alternate camp experiences. In 2020, due to the whole school moving to composite classes, each class will be going to camp with their house/motu group. This means that there are some children who may go back to Ngatuhoa in 2020. Teachers are aware of this and will plan and alter the camp plans accordingly. Organisationally, it is just too difficult to have classes split, dependent on their 2019 camp. We understand that some children may be disappointed, but we know that they will enjoy the camp experience, no matter where they go. We are no longer offering the sibling discount (apologies to those classes who were misinformed of this) as we are now only allowed to request donations to cover the cost of camps.

Donation Requests Ngatuhoa $120 Finlay TBC Waitawheta $135

POLICE VETTING SCHOOL PARENTS

The BOT has revised its Child Protection procedures, and in the interests of pupil safety, all parents likely

to help in the school, will be encouraged to undertake a police vetting check.

The Board of Trustees hugely appreciates the excellent support that parents provide to our staff and

pupils. If, as a parent helper, it is likely you could participate with pupils in an unsupervised position, or

you provide transport for other children, then you are encouraged to undertake a police vet.

Examples of the types of activities requiring parent police vetting are:

sports coaching/management

transporting pupils to events beyond the school eg class trips, elite sports events, competitions,

tournaments

parent help on school camps

If you would like to read about the police vetting process, please go to:

http://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/online-vetting-user-guide

The police vetting process takes approximately 3 weeks to complete and will remain current for a period

of two years.

The police vetting forms are included with this newsletter and are also available at the school office.

Once completed, please return confidentially to Karen McGovern – [email protected], who

will then processes your police vet through the online police vetting service.

NB Proof of identity is also required, please attached a copy of your drivers license.

SCHOOL VAN UPDATE - PSG

Our parent support group worked hard last year towards the purchase of a school van. We raised approximately $17,500.00. Initially, we decided to purchase a second hand one but these proved to be expensive and our Board of Trustees agreed that it would be better for the school to purchase the van new. Therefore, the BOT will top up the PSG funds to purchase a brand new 12 seater, due to arrive any day. The PSG ran many events in 2019 and we also ran a sponsorship scheme where we received fabulous support from many families and businesses connected to our school. We are extremely grateful for these donations to our school. Soon you will see our new van here at MMI, which will display our sponsors’ names. Thank you so much to the sponsors, PSG, BOT and your fundraising efforts. Watch this space!!

Summer, Sun and Softball!

The Western Bay of Plenty Softball Association has Softball and T-Ball available as the perfect summer sport. It’s easy to learn and play, only involves a couple of hours a week and very inexpensive to play.

Junior Softball season starts again on 8th February for Term One 2020 and we would love to see you at the park, enjoying Softball. Beginners are very welcome and don’t worry about having a glove at this stage, but please wear trainers.

Games are on a Saturday, at Carlton St Reserve, Ngatai Road, Otumoetai from 9am and run between 1 hour (U8 T-Ball, U10 Primary Softball) and 1:30 hours (U13 Intermediate and U15/U18 College Softball) - age cut off being 31st December 2019. The season runs through to 21st March 2020.

Ask your school sports person if the school has a Softball team first or come down to the park on Saturday 8th or 15th February at 8.30am and we can put your child into a team.
