T HE G ATHERING OF G OD ’ S P EOPLE
The Greeting Jesus Christ has made us a kingdom of priests to serve his God and Father. Glory and kingship be his for ever and ever. Grace, mercy and peace be with you and also with you.
Penitence
The Bishop invites all present to confess their sins. Bishop: Come, let us return to the Lord and say: Lord our God, in our sin we have avoided your call.
Our love for you is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early. Have mercy on us; deliver us from judgment; bind up our wounds and revive us; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Absolution
The Lord enrich you with his grace, and nourish you with his blessing; the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil; the Lord accept your prayers, and absolve you from your offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour.
Amen.
The Collect Bishop: Heavenly Father, you anointed your Son Jesus Christ
with the Holy Spirit and with power to bring to the world the blessing of your kingdom: anoint your Church with the same Holy Spirit, that we who share in his suffering and his victory may bear witness to the gospel of salvation; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

P ROCLAIMING AND R ECEIVING THE W ORD
The Gospel
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring the good news to the oppressed. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter seven. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.’ Jesus spoke up and said to him, ‘Simon, I have something to say to you.’ ‘Teacher,’ he replied, ‘speak.’ ‘A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?’ Simon answered, ‘I suppose the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You have judged rightly.’ Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, ‘Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.’ Then he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ But those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this who even forgives sins?’ And he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
Short Reflection by the Bishop

T HE R ENEWAL OF C OMMITMENT TO M INISTRY
Bishop My brothers and sisters, at his Last Supper, our Lord Jesus Christ gave his disciples a
new commandment, that they should love one another, and he prayed that they might be one. He gave them an everlasting sign of his own love, in the sacrament of bread and wine. He consecrated himself to his Father’s service, to be the high priest of the New Covenant. I invite you now to dedicate yourselves afresh to his service, as stewards of the mysteries of God and ministers of his grace.
The Bishop addresses all ministers, lay and ordained:
Will you continue faithfully in the ministry entrusted to you and do all that is in your power to witness to God’s love for his people?
All: By the help of God, I will. A lay person addresses all the ministers
May the God of peace sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, and he will accomplish it.
All Amen. Lord, have mercy.
My brothers and sisters, pray for all who minister, that they may be constant in prayer and steadfast in faith, and serve God’s people with joy.
Lord, hear us.
Pray for your deacons, that the Lord may pour upon them the riches of his grace. Pray that he who has called them to his service may make them worthy of his calling.
Lord, hear us.
Pray for your priests. Ask the Lord to bless them with the fullness of his love, that they may be faithful ministers of his word and sacrament, and lead his people in the way of salvation.
Lord, hear us.
Pray for your Bishop, that despite my unworthiness I may be faithful to the great trust that has been handed to me. Pray that I may become more like our Good Shepherd and great High Priest, the teacher and servant of us all, and so become more and more a sign of Christ’s loving presence among you.
Lord, hear us.
Pray for the families of those who minister, for their homes, and for all with whom they share their lives.
Lord, hear us.
Pray for those leading our country and all who are making decisions that affect us all. Lord, hear us.
4
Pray for everyone weighed down in these times of CoronaVirus and those ill with COVID-19; and for those who are caring for them.
Lord, hear us.
Pray for those who are mourning the death of someone they love at this time.
Lord, hear us.
May the Lord in his love keep us ever close to him, and may he bring us all to the fullness of eternal life.
Amen.
The Peace God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Bishop Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, All who has blessed us in Christ with every
spiritual blessing
Reader: The oil for the anointing of the sick and dying All Blessed be God for ever. Reader: The oil for the signing with the cross at baptism All Blessed be God for ever. Reader: The Oil of Chrism All Blessed be God, our strength and our salvation

The Preparation of the Table Pour upon the poverty of our love and the weakness of our praise, the transforming fire of your presence. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: We give you thanks because by your Holy Spirit you anointed your only Son to be the servant of all and ordained that he should enter into his kingdom through suffering. In your wisdom and love you call your Church to serve the world, to share Christ’s suffering and to reveal his glory.
And so with all your people with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin; giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us; he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again:
6
On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we do as Christ your Son commanded: we remember his passion and death, we celebrate his resurrection and ascension, and we look for the coming of his kingdom. Accept through him our great high priest this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
The Breaking of the Bread
The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.
Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.
The Communion
7
Spiritual Communion Reflect on these words Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’ John 6.35 Give thanks for the saving death and resurrection of Jesus and ask him to be with you now. Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
after the Prayer of St Richard of Chichester
