The Bridge Proces

In the Bridge Process, Streetlife makes use of a seven-step plan:

New composite materials often form an ecological alternative to

traditional materials:

Life Cycle Analysis

In addition to price, maintenance and design, sustainability has

alsobecomeanessentialfactorinmakingresponsiblechoices.

However,sustainabilityisnotcompletelyunequivocalandlends

itselftoseveralinterpretations.

Initsdesignprojectsanddevelopmentofproductsforoutdoors,

StreetlifemakesuseoftheLifeCycleAnalysis(LCA).

WithLCAsoftware,acomparativeanalysisismadeonthebasisof

3 main aspects:

- CO2emission(CarbonFootprint):amethodinwhichonlythe

gases that are held responsible for the ‘greenhouse effect’ are

takenintoaccount.

-Energyuse(CumulativeEnergyDemand):amethodinwhichto

total primary energy use is calculated during the lifecycle of a

product.

-Eco-indicators99:amethodinwhichaproductlifecycleis

assessedagainsttheimpactcategories:humanhealth,qualityof

theeco-system,andnaturalresources.

Design & Construct

OutdoorDesignexpertise,yearsofexperienceandknow-how

aboutmaterialsandproductiontechniqueshavegivenStreetlife

anenviablereputationforbridgesandurbanproducts.

Wenotonlydesignbutalsomanufactureandsupplytherequired

products.Totheclients,thissuccessformulaoffersaminimum

ofrisk.

Streetlifedesignedanultra-lightbridgeforBodegraven,extending

30 metres, with LED lighting, supported by the concrete walls of

anexistingviaduct.Theexpectedlifespanofthisconstructionis

60years.

ForAmsterdam,Streetlifedesignedandsuppliedlarge-sizetree

tubswithhardwoodslatsandastainless-steelinterior.

Thesetreetubshaveacapacityofapprox.5000litresandare

Streetlife Composite BridgesLifespan of Composite Deck Constructions

Theintegralcompositedeckofthemonocoquecompositebridge

supporthasnoproblemswithdifferencesincoefficientsof

expansion.Asaconsequenceithasamuchlongerlifespanthan

thetraditionalgritteddecksonsteelplates.Intermsofstrength,

separatelyinstalledpultrusiondeckprofilesaremorevulnerable

due to the orthotropic properties and are therefore weaker

laterally.Thelifespanofpultrusionprofilesislimitedbyany

concentratedandlocalloads.Thisvulnerabilityisnotpresent

iftheinjectiontechniquewithlaminatereinforcementinthe

composite material is used, as it is the case with the Streetlife

products.

yet affordable bridge with a natural allure and with a minimum of

risk.

Potential clients can select from the standard programme of

Composite Bridges, or may enter a ‘Design & Deliver’ contract for

acustom-madeCompositeBridge.

The design of the Streetlife Composite Bridge shown here has a

naturalcharmduetotheuseofnaturalfibresinthecomposite

material, warm CorTen material in the fences of variable heights,

andbrown-redcolouredgravelgrainsintheintegraldeck.The

high central part of the fence has been implemented as a safety

measure,inviewoftheroadpassingbeneath.Theultra-light

weight of the bridge, more than 30 metres in length, makes it

possible to support it by means of concrete walls along the

sunkenroad.

Energy-saving LED lightingcreateanexceptionallightdisplayin

theevening,withthelightbeamstwinklingtheCorTenmesh.

Streetdeck®

Sustainable Decking:

The new Streetdeck® composite material has a number of

propertiesthatareveryinterestingforapplicationoutdoors.

Itsslip-resistantqualityindryandwetweatherismuchbetter

thanthatofwood.Streetdeck® is sustainable, thus durable and

environment-friendly.Notreesarespecificallyfelledforthis

product.Streetdeck® avoids the problems that traditionally arise

with traditional decking materials, such as slipperiness,

highmaintenanceandecologicalobjectionssuchasthoseagainst

theuseofhardwood.

Slip-resistant:

Theslip-resistantqualitieshavebeenassessedinthecategory

‘safetoverysafe’.Theslip-resistancehasbeenexaminedwiththe

FloorSlideControl2000print.Aplasticsoleusedasasliding

surface.Thecoefficientoffrictionis0.47-0.72dependingonthe

wetordrycircumstancesandonthecolour.Themajorityofthe

valuesareabove0.6(verysafe).Themeasurementwasperformed

perpendiculartothedirectionoftheprofile.

Durability & Wear-resistance:

The durability of Streetdeck®40isexcellent,evenbetterthan

manyhardwoods.Incomparativeresearchwithbankirai,

Streetdeck®scoredsubstantiallybetter.Fungalgrowthcouldnot

befoundwithoutamicroscope.

The Streetlife Glass Spots are easily integrated in the

Streetdeck®40profiles.Theroundglassspots(ø3.5cmor

ø4.2cm)areindestructible,completelywatertightanddustfree,

have low energy use combined with a very long lifespan

(20-25years).TheGlassSpotsarenotonlydecorative,butalso

veryfunctionalasaguideline.

Glass Spots are supplied with a separate mounting plate for

incorporation into the Streetdeck®40profiles.

Technical Specifications of Streetdeck®

• Sustainable, very environment-friendly by application of 75%

residual wood fractions.

• Various colours, with Medium grey as standard. With large

projects (>500 m²) Red-Brown is optional. Streetdeck® greys only

to a limited extent under UV light.

• Roughness: classified as ‘safe to very safe’. Investigated using

Floor Slide Control 2000 print. Friction coefficients of

0.47 – 0.72 in wet and dry weather resp.

• Maximum surface load with 100% support:

max. 500 kN/m² for Streetdeck®40.

• Weight 25 kg/m² for Streetdeck®40.

• Durability is excellent: Streetdeck composite is resistant to

fungal growths.

• Inflammatory properties similar to wood.

• Maintenance: zero, alga scarcely attach.

• Subframe beams, max. 100 cm midpoint to midpoint.

Securing on at least 3 beams.

• Size tolerances: Length: -0.0 / + 20.0 mm,

Width: -1.0 / +3.0 mm, Thickness: -1.0 / +1.0 mm

• Expansion widthwise 2% and lengthwise 0.5%. After nine

months the composite material is almost entirely stable in terms

of expansion, as long as it is well ventilated.

With platforms and terraces, 30 mm should be left free all

around.

Streetdeck® should be well ventilated. Protracted contact with

moisture should be avoided. Platforms should have a run-off

slope of 2%.

• 12-15 mm should be applied as split width along the length.

For the split width at the ends, this should be 30 mm for

3 metres, 20 mm for 2 metres of Streetdeck®40 profiles.

• Streetdeck® can be worked on with the usual tools for wood

processing.

• The ends of the wood can be finished with ongoing

thermogalvanized angle sections.
