BYU and San José State are playing for the 18th time. The Cougars trail the Spartans 7-10 in the series, with 13 of the games happening between 1946 and 1969. Since then, BYU is 3-1. The Cougars won the last meeting, a 17-16 game in San Jose in 2015. The Spartans went for two after a touchdown in the final minute but BYU's Michael Wadsworth knocked away the pass to preserve BYU's win. • TEAMS COMING OFF A BYE. The Spartans are the third and final team the Cougars face this season that is coming off of a bye week. Earlier this year, Mississippi State and Boise State both had an extra week of preperation before playing BYU. • COACHING CROSSOVER. San José State head coach Brent Brennan was the wide receivers coach at Oregon State when Kalani Sitake was with the Beavers as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2015. Spartan defensive coordinator, Derrick Odum, coached defensive backs under Sitake at Oregon State. The two also worked together at Utah (05-07). Odum played defensive back for the Utes (1989-92). • INJURY BUG. BYU has had 35 different players miss significant time with an injury this season. Of those 35, 23 have been members of the two-deep and 13 have been projected starters. • PINK GAME. With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cougars will be adding some pink to their uniforms with pink athletic tape, sweatbands, socks and other accessories to show support. • HONORING LAVELL. Legendary hall of famer and beloved head coach at BYU for 29 seasons, LaVell Edwards, passed away on Dec. 29, 2016. The always steady and humble coach will be honored in several ways throughout the season, including the team wearing a uniform patch featuring his classic stoic profile he displayed for decades on the Cougar sidelines.

BIG PLAYS, COSTLY PENALTIES FACTOR INTO 37-26 LOSS TO HAWAIIHonolulu, Hawaii - The big plays were there on offense. The defense made some key stops. And, for the first time in five years, there was a San José State touchdown on a kickoff return.
Still, the Spartans needed more in a 37-26 loss to Hawaii.
Montel Aaron returned to action for the first time since the Sep-tember 16 game at Utah as San José State's starting quarterback. The Spartans (1-7, 0-4 Mountain West) had gone three consecu-tive games without producing a play of at least 20 yards either on the ground or in the air.
Aaron triggered the offense and by the end of the game connected with five different teammates on long gainers. The longest was a 59-yard touchdown strike to Rahshead Johnson who would finish with three touchdowns in the game.
In his first game back, the redshirt freshman was 17-of-27 with an interception for 322 yards and two touchdowns. The intercep-tion was on a 3rd-and-goal from the Hawaii 6-yard line with the Spartans facing a 21-13 third-quarter deficit.
The defense set the tone for the start of the game that bore simi-larities to the season-opener vs. nationally-ranked USF. A Diocemy Saint-Juste fumble on Hawaii's second offensive play of the game turned into a Bryce Crawford 28-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
San José State lengthened its first lead in a game since Septem-ber 2 on its next possession as Aaron lofted a pass over a Hawaii defender and into the arms of Johnson for a 10-0 advantage.
Hawaii (3-4, 1-3 MW) relied heavily on Saint-Juste to take the lead. A 1-yard run capped a 75-yard drive that chewed up 6:35 on the clock. Two drives later, Saint-Juste carried five times for 47 yards in an 83-yard drive capped by back-up quarterback Cole McDonald finding Dakota Torres in the end zone from 4 yards out for a 14-10 lead. Sainte-Juste would finish the game crossing the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 202 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries.
Crawford's second field goal of the game, a 52-yarder into a breeze with no time left, was his second field goal of the game and close out the first half scoring at 14-13. It would be the first of three times the Spartans would trail by two points or less the rest of the way. A Hawaii personal foul was a big part of that scoring drive.
Overall, penalties figured into the outcome. San José State was set back 11 times for a season-high 104 yards. Nine of those penalties came in the second half. A false start on the Hawaii 1-yard line and the second of two offensive pass interference calls on the drive preceded Aaron's one interception in the game.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after Johnson's 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown proved to be disastrous. The Spartans needed to convert a 35-yard extra-point try to close to a 28-26 deficit, but Hawaii came up with its fifth blocked kick of the season and Rojesterman Farris II turned the play into two points for a 30-26 Hawaii lead.
Johnson's kickoff return was set up by a terrific block by Thai Cottrell, perhaps the smallest player on the field. Cottrell's block in front of the Spartan sideline gave Johnson a chance to turn the corner and head for the end zone unchallenged.
San José State finished the game with a season-high 504 yards of total offense compared to Hawai'I's 451. The Spartans passed for a season-best 381 with Josh Love completing 4-of-6 for 59 yards after Aaron departed briefly after getting sent to the turf in the Spartans end zone on an incomplete pass.

MISSIONSBrigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics.
Since the organization of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served. The Church operates missions around the world in 150 nations speaking more than 160 languages. More than 70,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving prose-lytizing missions in 422 missions around the world. Most of the Church’s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 18 and 26. A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions. Missionaries work long hours — seven days a week for two years (or 18 months for women and couples) — teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service.
About 64 percent of the current team has served an LDS mission. Members of the team have served in 28 different countries and six of the seven continents around the globe. BYU currently has about 30 members of the team (previous signees or on roster) that are currently serving in the mission field.
HONOR CODEBYU’s Honor Code helps maintain this learning environment. Initiated by students in 1949, the Honor Code emphasizes being honest, living a chaste and virtuous life, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, using clean language, and following other values in line with the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

POLYNESIAN PIPELINEThe Polynesian Islands have become a hotbed for recuiting in recent years, but BYU has been one of the pioneers in bringing these players from Tonga, Samoa, the Hawaiian Islands and all of Polynesia to the forefront of college football since the early 1950s. More than 40 members of the current roster are of Polynesian descent.
Some of BYU’s most celebrated and decorated players have come from the Pacific islands, including All-Americans, national record holders, players who have gone on to compete in the NFL and now, several members of BYU’s current coaching and support staff.
Kalani Sitake was named BYU’s 14th head coach on Dec. 19, 2015, becoming the first Tongan head football coach in the NCAA. His staff includes Polynesians Ilaisa Tuiaki, Steve Kaufusi, Reno Mahe, Nu’u Tafisi, Russell Tialavea, Tevita Ofahengaue, Jack Damuni, Jasen Ah You, Sione Kinikini, Vince Feula and Harvey Unga.
FORMER PLAYERS ON STAFFThere are 20 former BYU football players on the football and athletic admnistration staff. Members of the staff were part of Cougar teams that won the 1980 “Miracle Bowl,” the 1984 National Championship, Heisman Trophy, 1996 Cotton Bowl along with many other accolades. 2017 OPPONENTS WEEKLY
LATE RALLY NOT ENOUGH FOR BYU IN 33-17 LOSS TO ECU
GREENVILLE, N.C. – BYU fell 33-17 to East Carolina Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Despite a season-high 421 yards of total offense, the late offensive push wasn't enough to mount a comeback.
Aleva Hifo led BYU receivers with a career-best 148 yards on nine receptions, with a long of 46. Matt Bushman and Micah Simon both recorded their first career touchdowns. Tanner Mangum finished 26 of 41 for 319 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Mangum threw for over 200 yards in the fourth quarter.
BYU had four possessions in the fourth quarter but could only find the end zone once in the final frame.
Fred Warner had a season-high 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss while Zayne Anderson tied his season high of nine tackles and forced a fumble.
Midway through the first quarter, Anderson forced a fumble and Adam Pulsipher recovered it. Two and a half minutes later, a 12-yard touchdown pass from Mangum to Simon capped off a five-play, 28-yard scoring drive. Kicker Rhett Almond connected on the extra point to give BYU a 7-0 advantage.
ECU equalized on its next possession as quarterback Thomas Sirk ran one yard into the end zone with 3:09 left in the quarter on fourth down to make it 7-7.
The Pirates took the lead early in the second quarter, 10-7, after Jake Verity’s 42-yard field goal attempt bounced off the inside of the upright and in with 10:35 on the clock. Nine plays and 70 yards later, Almond hit a 21-yard field goal to even the score 10-10 heading into halftime.
ECU extended its lead three minutes into the second half, 13-10, on Verity’s second 42-yarder of the night.
BYU’s Corbin Kaufusi got a hand on Verity’s third field goal attempt, but the 32-yard kick was still good and put the Pirates up 16-10 with 6:17 on the clock.
Near the end of the third quarter, Verity connected on his fourth field goal from 33 yards out to increase ECU’s advantage 19-10. The Pirates went 67 yards down the field en route to a 26-yard touchdown pass for a 26-10 lead less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.
BYU drove down to the Pirate 4-yard line but stalled on fourth-down to give the ball back to the home team. After a defensive stop, ECU intercepted a pass from Mangum on the 12-yard line and scored two plays later, 33-10.
With 3:48 left in the game, Mangum found Bushman in the end zone on a 12-yard pass for Bushman’s first career touchdown and a final score of 33-17.

Kalani Sitake (pronounced kah-lah-nee see-tah-kay) was named head coach overseeing the BYU football program on December 19, 2015, by director of athletics Tom Holmoe.
Sitake is the 14th head coach in BYU history. He comes to BYU from Oregon State, where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
A former Cougar running back (1994, 1997-2000), Sitake returns to his alma mater with 15 years of coaching experience, including seven years a defensive coordinator and four seasons as an assistant head coach.
Prior to serving as assistant head coach and defensive coordi-nator at Oregon State in 2015, Sitake spent 10 seasons at the University of Utah. He started at Utah in 2005 as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2009 before also being named assistant head coach in 2012.
Sitake has coached several Pac-12 and Mountain West Confer-ence honorees, including Morris Trophy winners Star Lotulelei (2011) and Nate Orchard (2014). He also helped mentor 14 NFL Draft picks during his time at Utah, including 12 all-league players and three freshmen All-Americans. He helped the Utes win seven of eight bowl games during his tenure.
Sitake began his coaching career in 2001 as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Eastern Arizona before becoming a defensive graduate assistant at BYU in 2002. Sitake then joined the staff at Southern Utah where he coached running backs, tight ends and offensive line during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and raised in Laie, Hawai’i and Provo, Utah, Sitake becomes the first FBS head football coach of Tongan descent. He is the 14th head coach in BYU history, and just the fourth since 1972, when Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards took over the program.
Sitake began his BYU playing career in 1994 prior to serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Oakland, California. After returning and redshirting in 1997, Sitake was a three-year starter at fullback for the Cou-gars from 1998-2000 under Edwards.
He was named BYU’s Football Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1998, Impact Player of the Year in 1999, along with team captain and the most valuable running back in 2000. He signed a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2001, but was forced to retire due to an injury.
