UNLV STUNS FIRST-PLACE FRESNO STATE, 26-16FRESNO, Calif. - UNLV halted Fresno State's four-game Mountain West winning streak on Saturday night at Bulldog Stadium, taking down the 'Dogs 26-16.
"We just made too many mistakes, the dropped punt, the snap over our head, we just made too many mistakes," said head coach Jeff Tedford.
Fresno State (5-3, 4-1 MW) was held to 292 total yards of offense as junior quarterback Marcus McMaryion went 16-of-27 through the air for 152 yards while five ball carriers combined for 140 yards on the ground. Freshman running back Jordan Mims led the way with 68 yards and his first career multi-touchdown contest scoring both of the Bulldogs' touchdowns on the night.
Six different Bulldogs notched receptions from McMaryion as the trio of Derrion Grim, Da'Mari Scott and KeeSean Johnson each tallied four receptions each. Grim led the way with 68 yards while tallying a game-long reception of 31 in the first quarter.
Defensively, a trio of Bulldogs led the way with eight tackles apiece as reigning Mountain West Defensive Player of Week sophomore linebacker Jeffrey Allison, sophomore defensive back Mike Bell and junior linebacker George Helmuth each had eight stops. The 'Dogs, held without a sack for the first time this season, added seven tackles for loss as seniors Tobenna Okeke and Nathan Madsen had two apiece.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start, taking thier first drive 13 plays for 78 yards, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Mims. That drive fea-tured nine rushes for 64 yards, Mims tallied 26 of them on the ground.
Scoring on its first possession for only the second time this season, senior kicker Jimmy Camacho missed his first extra point of his career, leaving the 'Dogs on top early, 6-0.
The Rebels answered with a eight-play, 48-yard drive that was capped by a 38-yard field goal by Daniel Gutierrez. It was the first time an opponent scored on the 'Dogs in the first quarter at Bulldog Stadium this season.
The 'Dogs responded with a 34-yard field goal by Camacho on the ensuing possession to extend the Bulldogs' lead, 9-3. The scoring drive went seven plays for 50 yards.
Edging UNLV 128-93 in total yards after the opening quarter, the Reb-els offense controlled much of the second quarter limiting the Bulldogs to only 20 yards of total offense and one possession.
The Rebels held the ball for 11:31 in the second frame, notching a pair of field goals to tie the game at 9-9 by the end of the half, marking the first time since going to Washington the 'Dogs did not hold a halftime lead.
UNLV began the second half with the ball and continued to control the time of possession battle after going on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took 5:29 off the clock. The Rebels finished their drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback Johnny Stanton. It was the first touchdown allowed by the Bulldog defense in 11 quarters dating back to the third quarter of the San Jose State contest on Oct. 7.
Responding to the adversity, the 'Dogs went on a season-long 89-yard drive that took 14 plays and was punctuated with a five-yard score from Mims to knot the game at 16-16. That drive saw the Bulldogs rush 11 times for 55 yards and McMaryion connected on three passes for 34 yards.
After forcing the Rebels to punt for the first time with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter, a costly mishandled punt by KeeSean Johnson set the Rebels up on a short field, needing 23 yards for a score. It took them four plays to capitalize, capped by a 2-yard rush by Lexington Thomas to give UNLV a 23-16 lead.
With the 'Dogs starting their next drive at their own 15, having 10:12 left in the game and down seven, the Bulldogs were able to move the ball 40 yards until being stalled at the UNLV 48-yard line with a fourth-and-two. Fresno State took a timeout and elected to punt coming out of it, the snap sailed over punter Blake Cusick's head for a loss of 36 yards. The ball was recovered by Cusick at the Fresno State 19-yard line and the ball turned over to the Rebels.
The Bulldog defense held UNLV to negative six yards, but a 25-yard field goal by Gutierrez put the visitors ahead 26-16.

MISSIONSBrigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics.
Since the organization of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served. The Church operates missions around the world in 150 nations speaking more than 160 languages. More than 70,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving prose-lytizing missions in 422 missions around the world. Most of the Church’s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 18 and 26. A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions. Missionaries work long hours — seven days a week for two years (or 18 months for women and couples) — teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service.
About 64 percent of the current team has served an LDS mission. Members of the team have served in 28 different countries and six of the seven continents around the globe. BYU currently has about 30 members of the team (previous signees or on roster) that are currently serving in the mission field.
HONOR CODEBYU’s Honor Code helps maintain this learning environment. Initiated by students in 1949, the Honor Code emphasizes being honest, living a chaste and virtuous life, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, using clean language, and following other values in line with the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

POLYNESIAN PIPELINEThe Polynesian Islands have become a hotbed for recuiting in recent years, but BYU has been one of the pioneers in bringing these players from Tonga, Samoa, the Hawaiian Islands and all of Polynesia to the forefront of college football since the early 1950s. More than 40 members of the current roster are of Polynesian descent.
Some of BYU’s most celebrated and decorated players have come from the Pacific islands, including All-Americans, national record holders, players who have gone on to compete in the NFL and now, several members of BYU’s current coaching and support staff.
Kalani Sitake was named BYU’s 14th head coach on Dec. 19, 2015, becoming the first Tongan head football coach in the NCAA. His staff includes Polynesians Ilaisa Tuiaki, Steve Kaufusi, Reno Mahe, Nu’u Tafisi, Russell Tialavea, Tevita Ofahengaue, Jack Damuni, Jasen Ah You, Sione Kinikini, Vince Feula and Harvey Unga.
FORMER PLAYERS ON STAFFThere are 20 former BYU football players on the football and athletic admnistration staff. Members of the staff were part of Cougar teams that won the 1980 “Miracle Bowl,” the 1984 National Championship, Heisman Trophy, 1996 Cotton Bowl along with many other accolades. Eight of BYU's 10 full-time coaches played football for BYU, more former players coaching at the alma mater than any other school.Tom Holmoe DB 1978-82 Athletic DirectorKalani Sitake RB/FB 1994, 97-00 Head Football CoachChad Lewis TE 1993-96 Associate AD/DevelopmentLee Johnson P 1980-84 Assistant Development DirectorRobbie Bosco QB 1981-85 Varsity Club/DevelopmentFui Vakapuna RB 2002-03, 06-08 Assistant to the ADEd Lamb LB/DE 1994-96 Asst. MANGUM, SIMON AND HALL KEY 41-20 WIN OVER SAN JOSÉ STATE PROVO, Utah – Tanner Mangum, KJ Hall and Micah Simon helped BYU to a 41-20 win over San José State Saturday afternoon at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Mangum completed 18 of 34 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. It marked his first three-touchdown game since 2015. Hall rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 44 yards. His 75-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the Cougars’ longest rushing play since Mike Hague’s 87-yarder against UNLV in 2006.Simon became the first BYU player with two touchdowns in a single game this season, as he reeled in touchdown passes in the first and fourth quarters.
On defense, the Cougars forced five turnovers. Brayden El-Bakri, Zayne Anderson, Austin Lee and Langi Tuifua all recovered fumbles, while Michael Shelton picked off a pass.
BYU’s first drive went 85 yards on five plays for a touchdown. Jonah Trinnaman caught a 45-yard pass from Mangum on the Cougars’ first offensive play. Mangum connected with Simon for 23-yard touchdown four plays later. BYU led 7-0 five minutes into the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, El-Bakri forced and recovered a San Jose State fumble on the Spartan 10-yardline. Mangum found Matt Bushman for an 11-yard touchdown pass over the middle and the Cougars extended their lead to 14-0.
San José State got on the board with six minutes left in the first quarter when Bryce Crawford hit a 48-yard field goal. Crawford provided the game’s next points early in the second quarter, with a 25-yard field goal to cut the BYU lead to 14-6.
On just the second play of the Cougars’ next drive, Hall made it 21-6 with the 75-yard touchdown run.
Rhett Almond made a 36-yard field goal with 5:09 left in the first half for a 24-6 Cougar lead, which they took into the locker room.
Squally Canada’s nine-yard touchdown run 10 minutes into the third quarter gave BYU a 31-6 lead. Mangum completed a 42-yard pass to Aleva Hifo to set up the score.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Mangum found Simon for a 41-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline. The Cougar lead increased to 38-6, and it was added to three minutes later with a 30-yard Almond field goal.
The Spartans scored their first touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter. Montel Aaron connected with Tre Walker for a 30-yard touchdown pass to put the score at 41-13. With less than a minute to play, San José State scored again, with Aaron hooking up with Tre Hartley for a nine-yard score.

Sitake is the 14th head coach in BYU history. He comes to BYU from Oregon State, where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
A former Cougar running back (1994, 1997-2000), Sitake returns to his alma mater with 15 years of coaching experience, including seven years a defensive coordinator and four seasons as an assistant head coach.
Prior to serving as assistant head coach and defensive coordi-nator at Oregon State in 2015, Sitake spent 10 seasons at the University of Utah. He started at Utah in 2005 as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2009 before also being named assistant head coach in 2012.
