Good Things are Happening Here Students in 5I have been learning about the benefits of Growth Mindset and Mindfulness. Growth mindset encourages students to tackle learning challenges with a positive frame of mind. Students begin their day with a 5 minute mindfulness session. Mindfulness practice brings a sense of calm to the classroom before commencing a productive day of learning. Recent research supports Mindfulness as a pos- itive tool to enhance student learning and wellbeing. Students in 5I have reported increased focus and concentration, as well as an improved ability to deal with different emotions and situations. Students are incredibly engaged with the Smiling Minds program which is free and available to use at home via the website http:www.smilingmind.com.au . I would like to acknowledge the work of Miss Webber in introducing mindfulness to both 5I and the school. Important Notice About Our School Development Day Please note that the date for our Term 3 School Development Day has been brought forward to the last day of this term, being Friday 5 July. This is a pupil free day. The first day of Term 3, being Monday 22 July will be the day students return to school for teaching and learning. School Athletics Carnival The schools Athletics Carnival for Years 3 - 6, plus Year 2 students who are turning 8 this year, is on Wednesday 3 July at the Cavanbah Centre. Buses will leave school at 9.30 am. Students selected to represent the school will participate in the District PSSA Carnival on Friday 9 August. The P&C will be operating a canteen on the day. Parents are welcome to attend, looking forward to seeing you there. Busy Term We have had a very busy term with much on offering for our students. There is rarely a day goes by that does not involve extracurricular activities of one kind or another. Staff are very busy with daily teaching and learning; tending to student wellbeing and participating in professional learning that is aligned to the School Plan; as well as preparing for the Athletics Carnival and writing student reports in their own time. We are very fortunate to be in a position where we are able to offer a diverse range of programs and activities. This is largely due to our highly dedicated and very capable staff who do much to ensure that our students are offered a wide range of extracurricular activities. School Arrival Time Students should not arrive at school before 8.50 am when teachers commence playground supervision. Students who travel on buses that arrive before this time, are to remain seated in the COLA area until the duty teacher arrives. Please refrain from sending the children to school before 8.50 am as there is no supervision before this time. The first bell at 9.17 am indicates the time for students to assemble ready for classes. A second bell at 9.20 am indicates the commencement of lessons. All playground fixed equipment is out of bounds in the morning. Photographs, Video Footage, YouTube & Social Media This is a reminder to all parents that we need to continue to respect the privacy of other students and their families. If you are taking photos or video footage of school activities, please stay focused on your child. The images that you capture are not to be uploaded onto any social media sites, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and like sites, without the express permission of the students concerned, their parents and the school. We appreciate your ongoing cooperation in regard to this matter. Praiseworthy Donations to the Building and Library Funds Families and friends will have received a letter that introduces our Building and Library Funds Donation Program. The funds provides an opportunity for individuals to make tax deductable donations to specific projects at school. The target for our Building Fund is to support the development of our new classrooms and school beautification, including playground infrastructure. The Library Fund’s target is to support the continuation of the upgrade of books and resources to support our home reading and guided reading programs, as well as interactive technology programs to enhance student engagement in literacy across the curriculum. We will continue our plan to embrace technology for learning, allowing students to access quality resources anytime, anywhere. The school community appreciates these donations that are recognised by the ATO as genuine donations to a charity. Please return the paperwork by the end of the week to receive your tax deductable receipt.

Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

School Protocols It has come to my attention that some members of our parent community may not be aware of certain school protocols. Firstly, there is the WHS (Work, Health & Safety) requirement that visitors on our site report to the front office, sign in and collect a visitor’s sticker. Secondly, if you have any issues or concerns regarding another student’s behaviour at school, please do not approach the child at school. Student behaviour at school is a staff responsibility and will be managed by staff in accordance with our Student Welfare and Discipline Policy. Thank you to parents for your ongoing cooperation in regard to these matters.

Feedback from Safe on Social Media Parent Session “Thanks Natalie, appreciate the school putting this on. It was very relevant and a great time to make parent more aware of the risks, before the kids hit high school. We've had some good conversations with the kids since.” “I wrote to thank Kirra today - it was such an incredibly valuable session. Thank you for organising it. I do wish more parents had come along.” “Thanks so much we got a lot out of it”. “Thank you for organising. That is a session that should fill the room with parents. It was very worthwhile. Now to delete TikTok.”

Band News It is excellent to have Cameron back on deck this week. Both Senior Band and the Bunyip Band were sounding fantastic after a break. A few reminders: Senior Band will be playing at Assembly on Monday 1 July. On Wednesday 3 July there will be no Wilderband or lessons with Cameron due to the Athletics Carnival. End of Term Mini Concert will be held on Thursday 4 July at 3.30 pm in the Band Room. Friday 5 July is a School Development Day so there will be no String Ensemble or lessons with Michael.

Choir News The Senior Choir has been continuing their preparations for their September trip to Sydney as part of the NSW Department of Education’s “Festival of Choral Music” – a 700 student choral performance to be held at the Opera House.

To help cover the significant financial costs, the choir has recently invited community members and businesses to “Sponsor a Song” that the children will be performing, raising over $2,000. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all who have made a donation. Your generosity is deeply appreciated by the choir and the wider school community. The Sponsors are: The Book Room, North Coast Medical, Ephraim Sella, Tyagarah Turf & First Hire, Bangalow Physiotherapy, Espresso Head Café, Byron Bay Property Sales, Byron Music, The Winter Whales, First National Real Estate and Choir Alumni Jill Eddington, Melissa Hertzberg and Lisa Morrison. In addition, the choir would also like to thank our own SRC for their generous donation.

Catapults Last Friday, 1S and 1C had a Catapult Challenge. We have been working on a unit called 'Powering On'. As part of this unit, the students have been learning about push and pull forces. The students had to work collaboratively to design and build their catapults. They then tested their catapults and made any modifications before the final challenge. The final challenge was about distance and accuracy with Ted and Rocco being the winners of the challenge. The students had a great time during this STEM activity working collaboratively, problem-solving and testing their designs.

Premier’s Debating Challenge Our debating team travelled to Southern Cross University to compete in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Debating Team has given up their own time to practise with me three times a week in preparation for this competition. Ace, Sam, Max, Toby and Camila all spoke very well, competing in three rounds against other local schools. Unfortunately, we lost all three rounds but this was no reflection of their effort. Our next round will be early in Term 3. I am so proud of the way these students have represented our School. Carly Hogan

1B and 1H sing together on Thursdays. We were treated by Mrs Browning bringing in her guitar for us last week for a singalong lesson.
