“By the Waters of Babylon” is a coming of age narrative but it is also a quest.

• Go back into your notes on quests and epics.

• Identify and give the details from the story of the portions of the Archetypes with this story follows in their standard order. Look at the coming of age pattern.

• Which elements of the quest fit which elements of a coming of age.

• Give some details about the coming of age elements such as: does his father approve of this Rite of Passage?

Write journal entry discussing the meaning of the quote above and how this might apply to the story “By the Waters of Babylon.” Where might the society in the story be headed?
