MOTIVATION FOR ESTABLISHING THE CENTRE University of Port
Harcourt is among 18 other African Universities that won the World
Bank grant to establish African Centre of Excellence. Locally,
sourced cost-effective OILFIELD CHEMICALS are required for
drilling, well completion, and achieving optimum oil recovery.
Currently, several billions of dollars are spent, annually,
importing these chemicals in the Gulf of Guinea for petroleum
exploitation. Yet, numerous natural resources can be, successfully,
processed and used for these operations. Nigeria and other African
countries have abundant supplies of these resources. Developing
technologies for in-country production of oilfield chemicals will
improve profit margin, build human capacity and create jobs. 3

OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTRE To promote home grown and regional
research networks that will develop human capital in Africa. To
strengthen human capacity and serve as training hub for Oil and Gas
industry workforce in Africa. To fill gaps in labor market demands
for skills within these specialized areas. To increase the
capabilities of faculties and students in Africa through quality
postgraduate education, knowledge transfer and internship
programmes. To run short courses in Petroleum and related
disciplines. To undertake consultancy services for the Oil and Gas
industry. 10
Slide 11
Partnering with regional universities and industry to undertake
a collaborative research in oilfield chemicals and petroleum
studies Producing industry- ready graduates. Building human
capacity for oil and gas industry in the African Region Working
with local producers of oil field chemicals to enhance their
research capabilities and produce high quality products Partnering
with industry/investors for commercialization of research outcomes.

CONCLUSION Establishing an African Centre of Excellence in
Oilfield Chemicals Research will: Boost the Nations Local Content
drive Impact positively on the economy of the nations in the Gulf
of Guinea and Africa Enhance capacity building in Petroleum &
related studies Provide platform for quality training and research
We have the Faculty, we have the enabling environment To make this
happen, we need support from all stakeholders
