lived adobe houses, multi-story house, adobe (clay, straw baked into hard bricks), stone. home one family ladders reach upstairs units. adobe house contain dozens units, home an entire extended clan.
How the Hopi Indian nation are organized
Hopis live on reservation, have own government, laws, police, services, US citizens, must obey American law. theocratic government. head priest or kikmongwi each village town chief. Today, village has own kikmongwi Now, nation led by elected tribal council.
The Hopi culture in the past, and now
Descendants of Hitsatsinom. one oldest cultures in North America. Anasazi =San Juan Basket makers. struggled maintain livelihood , protect land. Follow instructions from Masau. Hopi love dance to music as part of culture , performed ceremonies in “kiva’s”. (underground rooms)
HOPI TRANSPORTATION Originally just walked. no horses Hopis used dogs pulling travois (kind of drag sled) help carry heavy loads. Europeans brought horses to America Hopis travel more quickly
HOPI FOOD
expert farming people. planted crops corn, beans, squash, cotton and tobacco, raised turkeys for their meat. Men hunted deer, antelope, small game, women gathered nuts, fruits, herbs. meals included hominy, baked beans, soups, different types cornbread, also make PIKI BREAD.
Hopi CraftsHopi artists famous carved kachina (kasina) dolls, silver jewelry, fine pottery, baskets.art forms still here today. Hopi known as basket makers.

bracelet, rings, ear rings, necklaces. Some symbols.
HOPI FAMILY LIFEtypical tribe have husband who hunt, fought , provide his family with material needs required. mother (or squaw) look after home, cook for family and look after children
HOPI TOOLS AND WEAPONSHopi hunters used bows and arrows. did not go war often,. warriors sometimes defend territory against Spanish and Navajos. normally fired bows or fought with spears.
