Fulfilling the Legacy or…
…Dropping the Baton?
The theme of this conference is “Young, Gifted and Striving For Excellence:
Fulfilling the Legacy”. But what does that mean? More
importantly, what is Excellence and what is Legacy?
Excellence and Legacy
We usually define excellence as “better than good” or “ better than the standard”.
The word “Excellence” comes from a word that means “to excel” and it happens to be present tense.
What about legacy? Originally, legacy meant “a body of persons sent on a mission”. Now we define it as “anything handed down from the past”
Somewhere along the way we stopped handing our men a mission and started concentrating on owning one another’s stuff. Somewhere in the generational
race we dropped the baton.
If we look at a legacy as a baton, then we can see that there is only one of two
things that can happen: we either pass it or drop it. When you make a good pass
you are passing on a legacy that propels the next person forward. And when we
drop the baton, it causes us and the next man to stumble.
Baton #1: The Power of a Cycle
Tre Merritt from Dewitt, Arkansas
Bakari Sellers - South Carolina state representative
Colton MormonMayor
Like Father Like…
So what cycle would you like to begin? Or, what cycle are you willing to break in order to create one?
Fail to Break= Drop Baton Break and Re-create= Pass The Baton,
Create a Legacy Tardiness, Inconsistency=Reliability,
Professionalism Manipulation, Selfishness=Loyalty,
Motivation
How Do I Create A Cycle That Lasts?
#1) Define Your Victory
#2) Find Fuel For Your Rocket
By creating a cycle you establish a link or connection to the next wave of leaders. Everyone creates cycles,
but will yours be a legacy worth receiving?
POWER POINT!!!
Baton #2: Exposure
Exposure is the influence that forms the “future-you”.
You are the future of someone else.
When you do not become a “future-you” that advances society, but instead delays it or destroys it, you are dropping the baton.
Adolph Hitler
"What manner of man is this grim figure who has performed these superb toils and loosed these
frightful evils?" – Winston Churchill in
Great Contemporaries (1935)
systematic murder of 17 million civilians, six million Jews in the Holocaust. family moved to Lambach in 1897. There,
Hitler attended a Catholic school located in an 11th-century Benedictine cloister whose walls were engraved in a number of places with crests containing the symbol of the swastika
had a troubled relationship with father, who frequently beat him
Hitler was expelled, never to return to school again
His father wanted his son to follow in his footsteps as an Austrian customs official, and this became a huge source of conflict between them
lived in a shelter for the homeless Vienna at that time was a hotbed of
traditional religious prejudice and 19th century racism
#1) Study about something that you hate
Man usually hates what he doesn’t understand
Exposes incorrect teachings and trainings Grants you the freedom to ask questions Removes stereotypes and racism Finds common ground to establish relationships
#2) Study Culture…You Can Start From the Couch
Travel Channel History channel Discovery Channel Planet Green D.Y.I. Food Network The Library is not your enemy, it is your
friend (checking out books and dvd’s for free)
#3) Find a Life Investor (Mentor) who is on another level than you, and find one who is on another
dimension.
Exposure is the revealing of life’s plans. If you are exposed to the
secrets, and you do not share them, then you are dropping the baton. Everyone is exposed to something
that someone needs to know.
POWER POINT!!!
Baton #3: How Much Will You Be Worth?
How Much Is His Time Worth?
$25,000 per minute
Say What?
!?
So what will you be worth? What is your self-price? How profitable will you be
to this world? What will you change? Everyone exists as a
solution to a problem. The more problems you solve, the higher your value will become.
Ephren W. Taylor - entrepreneur
At age of 12, created Super Nintendo games that he sold for $10 each
Soon he built a Web site for a vitamin supplement retailer, which earned him $3,800
Discovered that a company made $800,000 from the Web site he'd built.
Created GoFerretGo.com, a job-posting Web site for high school and college students that eventually was valued at $3.5 million.
By never establishing what you are worth, your self-price, you can be
easily bought and easily sold. People who are invested are called Gifts. People who are bought are called
slaves. When you never realize your worth, you set a standard of slavery—we never move forward, and we
drop the baton.
POWER POINT!!!
George Washington Carver
CONCLUSION
"The bill is not simply a momentary pause on the part of busy men engaged in the conduct of the war, to do honor to one of the truly great Americans of this country, but it is in essence a blow against the Axis, it is in essence a war measure in the sense that it will further unleash and release the energies of roughly 15,000,000 Negro people in this country for full support of our war effort.”
Pass the baton and finish the race
well!!!
