The Cover

How?◦ The cover features a relatively popular, young

actress in a glamour shot.

◦ The side captions tell about the stories that are inside. These include fall fashion trends, celebrity diets, easy ways to get sexy hair, and a tell-all interview with the featured actress.

How does the cover attract readers?

Why?◦ Most women follow fashion trends and update

their make-up looks to keep looking fresh and modern.

◦ They call the diets crazy on the cover but still talk about each one in the magazine.

◦ This may lead women to try them because the diets have obviously worked for the rich, famous, super-skinny, glamorous Hollywood icons that use them.

“Judging by the number of size 0s in Hollywood, these weird restrictions can work.”

The diets include: Apple-Cider Vinegar Diet, The Air Diet, The Baby Food Diet. etc.

The Pictures

Page 12: By Heidi Davis, Jessica Farmer, Ashley Sluder, and Hanna Sparks.

According to the pictures women are stick thin with no curves or boobs, and extremely long hair.

Most of the pictures were of “white” women.

All of the pictures were glamour shots with perfect hair, make-up, and sexy poses

Ethnicity in Magazines

Page 14: By Heidi Davis, Jessica Farmer, Ashley Sluder, and Hanna Sparks.

Both of the previous ads were Cover Girl ads featuring the singer Rhianna

In the first picture Rhianna has a darker skin tone

In the second picture (her newest CG ad) she has a dramatically lighter skin tone

We noticed lighter skin-tones in the very few pictures we found in the magazine that featured women of color

Ethnicity in Magazines

They were several ads about all-natural products or more “green” products◦ It is hard to tell if the ads were political because

women care about the environment and want to use eco-friendly products or if the advertisements are marketing protecting the planet as women’s job.

Skin-care ◦ No aging! No wrinkles! Tan but not too tan… body

perfecting creams Male-focus and heterosexuality

women appeared in sensual poses and group pictures with males

What does it take to be feminine?

Page 16: By Heidi Davis, Jessica Farmer, Ashley Sluder, and Hanna Sparks.

Based on the pictures a woman must be petit and sexy

The magazine has an article on going for shorter hair cuts but, all of the models have really long hair

Being feminine is defined in the clothes we wear, how we look, and how sexy we can act
