Adaptivity
What is adaptivity?
“A system is called adaptive if it is able to change its own characteristics automatically according to the user’s needs”
Therefore we are not restricted to only one specific task.
Since the user is always on the move the context changes every now and then
4
MapsMaps have the ability to provide large amount
of information to a user in a single glance. two important aspects matter about maps:
o The purpose of use o the user
5
Context-awarenessrefers to a general class of mobile systems that can sense their physical environment, i.e., their context of use, and adapt their behavior accordingly.
location is a primary capability location-aware does not necessarily capture things
of interest that are mobile or changing. Context-aware in contrast is used more generally to include nearby people, devices, lighting, noise level, network availability, and even the social situation
6
Objective Of adaptive mappingThe objective is to shift the focus from LBS to
Context Based Services where the service is tailored to the current usage situation
7
Variables Involvedcontext includes at least location, time, and
usercontext has static and dynamic components;context has a spatial and a temporal range. It also includes place, time, identity, and
activity
8
UseAdaptive maps is not just getting us from
point A to B but it actually does some of these tasks as well, they are:
Searching Locating IdentifyingChecking Navigating
9
An ExampleIt is early evening and Susan and Martin are going by car from
their flat in direction of the City. Martin checks with his PDA which Bars offer the most
attractive Happy Hour prices and picks the Indian Bar. By one click he gets the phone number of the Bar, by another click he is automatically connected to make a reservation for a table for six people. Next he is interested in whether their friends are already on their way and how much time is left for searching a parking space. A glimpse on the map is enough to see that their friends are not much further either. To be able to guide Susan, Martin asks for the nearest multi storey with free spaces. Martin does not know all one-way roads and cul-de-sacs in the City. To be safe, he requests the shortest route including current traffic information. After Susan has parked the car, the route guide quickly leads them to the Indian Bar and a tasty drink.
