President's Message by Fran Claassens
Dear fellow quilters:
Yesterday I had a planned service call with Direct TV. They had sent me a
new box and I didn't know how to set it up and not wanting to bother my son-
in-law for the upteenth time, I was willing to spend for the $99
appointment. They sent a very nice man who judging from his appearance, I
was afraid he couldn't do the job. I was afraid he would exceed the maximum
weight allowance of the Little Giant Ladder. It turned out to be a wonderful
call and exceptional employee. How terrible of me to think that in the first
place. Prejudging based on appearance and not on strength of
character. Not good. My apologies. He installed my box on the inside and
got on the ladder to check my dish on the roof. He got on the top rung of the
ladder, unbolted it, and brought it down. It had a crack in it. When it rains
with a cracked dish, I would get tiling. I thought that was normal due to the
storm. Nope, caused by the crack. He replaced the new big dish part and
he replaced a bulb on my longarm light bar I couldn't reach. As he was

Community Service 2018 Leaders: Nancy Colwell, Inga Ahlberg, Trudi Riley-Quinn, Barbara Victorino
So, our secret is out! Community Service has a goal that 100% of our members
participate in the varied activities and projects we offer this year. We have many kits to
choose from: pillowcase, stocking, quilt and placemat kits. All kits are cut and ready to be
sewn. In addition, we have a workday scheduled on the third Tuesday of each month, with
the exception of April, where anyone can help create kits and sew. Some of you may have
never put together one of the kits and they can be tricky the first time. We offer a private
“tutor” to any member who requests one. The tutor can come to your home, if you would
like. Also, at the May workshop we are putting on a quilt binding demonstration. Binding
can be tricky, so come and learn from someone who has mastered the skill.
We received 13 quilts, 5 preemie quilts, 63 pillowcases, 59 stockings and 10
placemats at our last meeting. Thank you all! At our May meeting we will have two
speakers from organizations that we donate to who will illustrate why the work you all do
is so important.
Remember, there is no Community Service workday in April!

Get Your GED! Your Number nine project is due at the May meeting. Bring it to Sandy and me to receive your little
prize and fill out an entry ticket for the larger prize drawing! Also, we will be collecting $2 to continue
playing another two months. Let's see a lot of finished projects in Show and Tell again this Month!

2018 Quilt Show
Show Quilt News WIN A $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE Cornelia Smithson [email protected] Do your quilts bring back memories? A lot of times we remember what we did when we were making a quilt. We remember where we were, what was happening in our lives, the friends and family we share our lives with. It’s that time of year to start thinking about entering a quilt in our 2018 Quilt Show. Bring your completed Quilt Show Entry form to the June general meeting along with a picture of your quilt and a picture of yourself that will be attached to your quilt card on the front of your quilt. You will be eligible to win one of two $25 gift certificates at the June general meeting. The 2018 Quilt Show Entry form will be available on the website at the beginning of May. Entry forms will also be available at the May general meeting. Whether art, traditional or modern we get to inspire thoughts, emotions and comfort to the people around us. Our wonderful quilt show is were we can share our love of quilting.
Raffle Baskets Colleen Voet We're starting to plan for our 2018 quilt show and we have a new member, Trish Steen, who has volunteered to take over our Raffle Baskets. Let's help her out by letting her know you or your group is planning to donate a raffle basket. If you don't know the theme yet, that's OK, although you'll want to decide one before someone else snaps up your idea. The minimum is the name of (or members in) your group, and the contact person. You can email Trish at [email protected]. Raffle baskets are a popular feature at our quilt shows, as well as a nice fundraiser for the guild. Also, keep in mind the guild usually puts together a basket or two of fat quarters, and we'll be asking for donations for those as well. And if you'd like to contribute but don't have a "group," let Trish know that, too - she'll be happy to help.
Block of the Month This year in Block of the Month I plan to keep it easy and simple. Each month for $2 you will
get a focal fabric and instructions to complete a block. You take it home add your own fabrics
to complete it and bring it back to the next meeting. Your name will go into the bag and the
name drawn will will all of the returned blocks plus extra fabric to complete the quilt. Each
month will be a different pattern and fabric to purchase for $2 for a whole new quilt. Just think
this is a very easy way to win a brand new UFO!! If you have any questions please email or
call me.
Need a ride to a guild meeting? The Pioneer Guild is endeavoring to develop a ride share program for members who need a ride or would prefer company when driving to and from meetings. If you would be interested in ride sharing, either being a driver or a rider, please contact Pat Callahan, [email protected] or 916-632-1290.
Let me know your location and we will try and match you up. We will also have a sign -up sheet at our member sign- in table over the next few months.
Website Updates by Colleen Voet
You may know that Emily Easley has gone, which left us with nobody to administer the Guild’s website. So
the board asked if I could look at it and make recommendations about what we should do. I gave a report to the guild at the April meeting but it occurred to me those who weren’t there might also be interested in what
I first have to say I was a little reluctant to take this on because I already have two pretty big jobs in the guild
and I really didn’t want to learn WordPress, which is the software used to develop our current website. But
that was necessary, so it became the 5th
website software I’ve learned. These are my personal observations,
conclusions, and recommendations.
Emily did a ton of work on the website. She was very ambitious. I think that caused somewhat of a problem
in that it got a lot more complicated than many of our members wanted to deal with. I know a lot of people
were frustrated by the double password on the membership renewal page last year, and it looks like that was
largely the result of a misunderstanding. But we’re changing it now.
I also found that Emily spent a lot of time over the first 3 months of this year writing guidelines and
instructions for the people who followed her, so that we would be able to maintain what she started. Take, for
example, the Mt Hope signup page that works really well. It takes all the data from the page and puts it on a
spreadsheet that the camp co-chairs can have and edit. We can also add people who give us hard-copy
registrations instead, so all the data is in the same place. Emily created one not only for Spring, which we are
using now, but also one we can use for Fall.
From my point of view, the biggest change that Emily made was a fundamental shift in how a website is
created and maintained. In the “old” days, our website resided on my laptop. I would make changes then
upload them to the server. The good thing was that I was very familiar with the software and had a lot of
control. The bad thing was, what happens if something happened to me? – nobody else could access the
website and you’re kind of up the creek. In the new model, the website resides on the server. You log into the
server, make changes, save them, and it updates. The advantage is that more than one person can access and
update the website and you’re not dependent on just one person. The downside is that you have to learn their
software, and somebody who doesn’t know what they’re doing can mess things up. (But hopefully that won’t
happen too often.)
I believe that Emily made a lot of decisions that ended up being good for the guild. Some of them are technical
ones that I won’t go into here. She was turning the website from a place to get information, to a tool that
would also help us do our jobs. For example, by automating membership renewals you’re not dependent on
having to read and interpret crummy handwriting, or worry about making errors when you’re typing email
addresses or phone numbers. If an error is made, it’s not the committee member; it’s the member herself who
made it. This website also re-configures itself depending on whether you’re looking at it from a computer or a
tablet or a smart phone, something else that didn’t exist a few years ago.
So my recommendation is that we keep this model, and have a team responsible for maintaining the
website. We have a couple of new members who indicated interest in working on the website, so after camp is
over we are going to teach them how to do that. And they’re bringing fresh eyes and ideas that I think will
make our website not only useful for members but also attractive to prospective members. There are still some
things that I don’t know how Emily did, but I’m hoping one of us will be able to figure them out eventually.
If you haven’t looked at the website lately, you’ll find we’ve simplified it and hopefully made it easier to
navigate and find things. Take a look at it and see what you think. I’m always open to ideas and
suggestions. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, try the “search” box and then let me know what gave
you a problem so maybe we can fix it…unless, of course, it’s the dreaded “operator error.”
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
For all newsletter updates, please continue to send your articles and advertisements to [email protected]. They are due the Friday after the General Meetings. For all website updates, please send your updates to [email protected].
