Julius Caesar wanted to show that he was the ultimate emperor so he locked people in the Colosseum.

Question: What do the actions inside the Colosseum tell us about that society?

*The actions tell us that the Romans were very violent and liked to watch people die, day after day.

Why was the Colosseum built?

It was built in 72 A.D. after the death of an emperor. The next emperor wanted to make the citizens happy. With a large army of slaves he built the Colosseum in 10 years.

Different Matches*Gladiators were prisoners of war, slaves , or criminals. They

needed to please the spirits with the offerings of blood.

*Man Vs. Animal matches They would starve wild tigers, panthers, and lions to start a chase a gladiator.

*Animal Vs. Animal Were they would put an animal and an animal in one place and force them to fight each other.

*Naval Battle were they flood the arena and put two boats holding thousands of people and let them fight.

Armor and Defenses*Gladiators in general wore little amounts of clothing. Almost all

gladiators fought with bare chests, which the Romans viewed as a symbol of strength and courage. They wore a canvas loin cloth, called a subligaculum, which was worn in a variety of colors. Gladiators also sandals, even though many fought barefoot.

*They also wore some protective clothing like:

*Manicae -leather and cloth wrapped around the arm and wrist for padding

*Balteus - a sword belt

*cingulum - which was a leather belt used to protect the waist

* Fascia - protective leg padding worn below a greave

*Galerus - metal shoulder guard (Retiarii or Laquerarii)

*Subarmallis - padded linen worn under armor to prevent chaffing and provided extra protection

*Ocrea - a metal leg guard, or greave, that ran from the knee, or sometimes the thigh, to below the shin protecting the front of the leg

Emperors would keep people from going against them by giving them entertainment, like circuses.

They would also try to keep people happy by giving them little gifts, such as loaves of bread.

They tried to make the regular people think they were important to the emperor.

How did the emperor

manipulate the people?

Roman citizens would go see mock sea battles, circuses, animals fighting, and animal hunts.

The main thing they liked to watch people fighting.
