INTRODUCTION

In the next few slides I am going to teach you about Greece. I hope you like my project.

Where is your country?

My country is located in southern Europe. surrounding countries are, Bulgaria, Albania, and Macedonia. Greece is near the Aegean sea.

What is the national language?

The people of Greece speak Greek. Some people in Greece speak English and French. For example, in English you say, how are you?, but in Greece you say, pos iste?

Unique customs/celebrations

Greek winter solstice-They do things such as, candle lighting, and bonfire creation and many more things, like games. And is held when Greeks are less likely to set sail.

On Easter they eat lamb They bake Koulourakia, Tsoureki, and also butter twist cookies.

On Christmas they have the children sing carols. The Greek date for Christmas was picked because on the same day they celebrate a Persian god named Mithras

Historical events

The Persian war-The Persian empire was much larger than Greece’s. Athens sent supplies to help out Greece. Those supplies included, weapons.

The battle of Thermopylae-The war took place in the 2nd Persian Invation of Greece in September 480 B.C. It was an alliance of Greece City-States, and the Persian empire of Xerxes. In the end the allied armies defeated the Persians at the battle of Plataea. And that ended the Persian war.

Greece flag

The 9 stripes on Greece’s flag represent the number of syllables in the Greece phrase “Eleutheria H Thanatos” translated as “Freedom or Death” a battle cry used during the revolt against the Ottoman Occupation. The colors on the Greece flag are blue and white. The blue represents the sea which is really important to Greece and is a big part of the economy. The white represents the waves in the Ocean. White is also seen as the color of purity. And blue was also a color of protection.

Major recources

Some of Greece’s major resources are oil, stone and food. They sometimes grow some of their food. They use oil for machines, and to power things. Stone is used for houses and other things to build. Stone is also used for sculptures.

Tourist attractions Temple of Poseidon-The temple of Poseidon

was built by Pericles. The temple is located at cape Sounion. It is on top of an earlier sea temple.

Mount Olympus-Rising at about 9,570 feet, Mount Olympus is the highest point in the country. Mount Olympus gets a lot of visitors.

The acropolis-The word acropolis is a combination of two words “Acro” meaning upper, and “polis” meaning City. The Acropolis is about 80 feet tall, and 50 feet wide. It took about 8 years to be built.
