What is Acid Rain?

Acid Rain and the EnvironmentAcidity levels rise in lakesMany fish cant live in acidic waterNatural defenses of trees lowered or hinderedSusceptible to disease/pests and the elementsSoil nutrients removed (Calcium, Magnesium)Adds more nitrates to the environmentIf enters body of water, can cause algal bloom

Sulfur Dioxides and Nitrogen Oxides released into atmosphereFossil fuel combustionMix with water, oxygen and other chemicalsSO2 and NO dissolve easily in waterAble to be carried far distances

Causes of Acid RainSO2NOx

Alternative energy sources Natural gas, nuclear power, hydropower, wind energy, solar energy Clean your smokestacks! Use scrubbers to remove harmful substances left over by gasses Restore damaged environments Add limestone (base) to lakes to counteract acidity Obey laws restricting amount of pollutants released Title IV of the Clean Air Act How Can We Prevent It?
