BY 2030, STOCKHOLM WILL BE ONE OF THE CLEANEST, SAFEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES IN THE WORLD!Green IT strategy for
the City of Stockholm
THIS IS GREEN IT
Green IT is the collective name for the measures designed to reduce our environmental impact with the aid of IT, and involves: Using information technology to reduce our
environmental impact Reducing the energy consumption and
environmental impact of the IT sector.
EUROPEAN GREEN CAPITAL 2010
“Outstanding, long historical track record of integrated urban management. Confirmed by its ongoing credible green credentials. Ambitious plans for the future clearly demonstrate continuity.”
GREEN IT IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF MAKING STOCKHOLM A
WORLD CLASS CITY!
THE CITY OF STOCKHOLM NOW HAS A GREEN IT STRATEGY
The Green IT strategy is adopted by the City Council and administered by the City Executive Office.
It applies to the City’s administrations and Stockholms Stadshus AB, including its subsidiary companies.
The Green IT strategy is based on the goals of the city’s environmental programme and arealisation of the City’s e-Strategy.
IT AS ECO-TECHNOLOGY -ACTION AREAS
ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDINGS
ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDINGS
Energy consumption by the city’s own buildings and facilities shall be reduced by 10 per cent from 2006 levels.
Actions required:– Heating, ventilation and lighting can be controlled in
line with tenant requirements, using IT-based control systems.
– Encourage the development of new technology designed to reduce energy-related emissions from buildings.
– Turn off lights in empty buildings and install presence control.
ILLUSTRTATE ENERGY AND ELECTRICITY USAGE
ILLUSTRATE ENERGY AND ELECTRICITY USAGE
Technical solutions offer substantial potential for increasing energy efficiency in the City’s property holding.
Illustrating and visualising electricity and energy usage is an important tool in increasing energy efficiency.
Actions required:– Introduce individual metering and charging for
electricity, water, heating, cooling and lighting consumption in residential and business premises.
ENVIRONMENTALLY EFFICIENT TRANSPORT
ENVIRONMENTALLY EFFICIENT TRANSPORT IT and reliable access to geographic information
are some of the most important tools in changing and revitalising the transport sector. The need for transport and travel can also be changed.
Actions required:– Develop traffic management support through IT
support. – Travel planners and navigation support. – Route optimisation and coordinated planning
through IT support.
ECO-FRIENDLYTRAVEL
ECO-FRIENDLY TRAVEL
Promote the replacement of mobility by accessibility, in order to reduce the need for physical travel.
IT can help reduce the need for personal transportation and offer the potential for more flexible working.
Actions required:– Generate the preconditions for changing the way
we work.– Visualise the environmental effects of travel to and
from work. – Promote cycling by providing access to navigation
support.
DIGITAL MEETINGS
DIGITAL MEETINGS
Current technology enables traditional meetings to be replaced by digital ones, leading to a direct reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The City’s goal is to replace physical meetings wherever appropriate.
Actions required:– Support for digital meetings by instituting
standard functionality in the workplace or by procuring web services.
– Generate incentives for employees to choose digital meetings.
DEVELOPING E-SERVICES
DEVELOPING E-SERVICES
We can minimise our environmental impact by continuing to invest in e-services that replace paper forms and reduce travel.
Actions required:– Prioritise the development of e-services that
reduce environmental impact and increase operational efficiency.
DIGITAL CASE PROCESSING
DIGITAL CASE PROCESSING
The City must implement efficient processing and storage methods for digital document and case processing.
Actions required:– Generate the preconditions for committee
members to retrieve documents digitally before committee meetings are held.
– Enable documents, minutes and decisions to be signed digitally.
GREENER IT –ACTION AREAS
ECO-FRIENDLY IT PROCUREMENT
GREEN DATA CENTRES AND GREEN DATA COMMUNICATIONS
GREEN WORKPLACES
MORE EFFICIENT PRINTOUTS
INITIATIVES IN THE CITY OF STOCKHOLM REDUCING THE
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT–According to the
Green Digital Charter
EUROCITIES GREEN DIGITAL CHARTER
Background
Green Digital Charter aim to:
• measure and manage the environmental impact of ICT infrastructures• optimise ICT use for enabling development of "smart" communities -- particularly via ICT deployment in the building, transport, lighting and energy sectors• implement ICT infrastructures which unleash transformational behavior change in support of lifestyles more in harmony with our larger ecosystem.
Hammarby Sjöstad - an urban district with emphasis on water and ecologyThe Hammarby Model outlines environmental solutions for waste, energy, water and sewage. Hammarby Sjöstad was for many years Stockholm’s largest urban development project.
SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL
SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL
Now, Stockholm is building new eco-profile residential areas using experience gained from Hammarby Sjöstad.
One of the new areas, Stockholm Royal Seaport (Norra Djurgårdsstaden) aims at being free of fossil fuel and climate positive by 2030.
Stockholm Royal Seaport
SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL
A new model for sustainable urban developmentis created.
The ambition is clear: Stockholm Royal Seaportwill be a global showcase for sustainable urbanconstruction and design, where innovative environmental technology and creative solutions are developed, tested and presented.

SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWAL
Svenska Bostäder is the City of Stockholm’s largest public housing company. The company owns and manages 32,000 residential units and 5,000 commercial units.
In the coming 5-10 years, Svenska Bostäder will launch its largest venture so far by investing in environmental refurbishment and sustainable building of new housing.
During 2010, several new low-energy and passive houses will be under construction.
Congestion charging/environmental charging (electronic processing of road charging) has been used as a method of controlling and changing traffic behaviour and reducing the environmental impact of vehicular traffic in Stockholm’s city centre since 2006.
CONGESTION CHARGING
TRAFFIC INFORMATION
Stockholm not only has active traffic management, it also has a special website, Trafiken.nu, which describes the current traffic situation. It also describes planned disruptions when a road is being dug up, for example, and other road closures.
The new equipment yields a total reduction of ca. 30% in the equipment’s electricity consumption. The estimated saving corresponds to the annual energy requirement for ca. 300 apartments. Stokab is helping to heat Östra Real’s school building by enabling the heat produced by communication equipment in the building to contribute to the heating of the building.

REPLACEMENT OF COMPUTER EQUIPMENT (DATA SWITCHES) IN THE CITY’S SCHOOLS
The Environmental Barometer
which provides information on numerous aspects of Stockholm’s environment, is available on the City’swebsite.
These aspects include: • Climate and greenhouse gas emissions• Air quality• Nature, landscape and biotopes• Housing and health• Traffic etc.
EXAMPLES OF OTHER CLIMATESMART SOLUTIONS
• Changeover to electric cars and hybrid vehicles• Journey planner for different types of vehicles • Green IT projects in waste management• Access control systems for recycling centres• SMS signalling of hazardous waste collection
TOGETHER, WE CAN CREATE A WORLD CLASS GREEN
CAPITAL CITY!
THANK YOU!
