Conditions for filling coolantFilling coolant
Contact your Scania dealer for further information about
coolant.BConditions for filling coolantWorking on the vehicle
cooling system
WARNING!Use protective equipment when working on the vehicle
cooling system. Coolant can cause skin irritation. Hot coolant can
cause burns. Ethylene glycol is highly dangerous if imbibed.
IMPORTANT! Use only Scania coolant, or other tested product that
meets Scania requirements
related to antifreeze and protection against corrosion. Damage
arising from the use of incorrect coolant can invalidate Scania's
warranty.
Damage to the coolant pump shaft seal will cause coolant
leakage. Fill coolant correctly. Air pockets can cause overheating
and thereby damage
to the coolant pump shaft seal. Do not start the engine if there
is too little coolant in the cooling system as this
could cause damage to the coolant pump shaft seal. Too high a
dose of antifreeze or corrosion inhibitor will increase the amount
of
sludge and blockages accumulating in the radiator. Too low a
content may lead to corrosion in the coolant system or build-up of
ice
at low temperatures. Scania CV AB 2012, Sweden

Filling coolantConditions for filling coolantIMPORTANT! After
coolant is filled, the cooling system must be pressure tested to
check that the
expansion tank pressure valve is operational and that the
pressure cap seals tight-ly. The pressure valve must not open until
pressure has reached 0.70.9 bar
(overpressure). Once the pressure valve has opened, the
remaining pressure in the system must
not be lower than 0.5 bar (overpressure). If the expansion tank
pressure cap does not fulfil these conditions, it must be
re-newed.
Read more under the heading Pressure testing the cooling
system.
Coolant content and propertiesCoolant recommended by Scania is a
mixture of water, antifreeze and corrosion in-hibitor (ethylene
glycol). Coolant has the following properties which are important
to the function of the coolant system:
Corrosion inhibitor Antifreeze Raises the boiling point
The content antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor should always be
3555 percent by volume. Otherwise, the coolant is not effective.

countriesIMPORTANT!
In order to maintain the protection from corrosion it is very
important that the coolant contains antifreeze and corrosion
inhibitor also in countries where the temperature never drops below
0C.The content antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor should always be
3555 percent by volume. Otherwise, the coolant is not
effective.
Topping upCoolant must only be topped up with pre-mixed coolant.
Pre-mixed coolant can ei-ther be a concentrate mixed with clean
freshwater or pre-mixed coolant from the fac-tory.
IMPORTANT!Containers, which are used for mixing coolant, must be
intended for the purpose and free from any dirt or contaminants.
Keep empty containers closed so that they do not attract dirt or
dust. Scania CV AB 2012, Sweden

982Work description1. Slowly fill the cooling system via the
drain and filler nipple under the radiator
using a coolant tank with adapter and hose. See the
illustrations.Note:Only small quantities of coolant may be poured
in from above. The system must be thoroughly bled. Run the engine
and check that the highest point of the cooling sys-tem becomes
hot. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank after running.

Coolant bleed pipes2. Ensure that the cooling system bleed pipes
are not blocked or damaged. There are bleed pipes from the radiator
and engine to the expansion tank. See illustration.
IMPORTANT!The bleed pipes must be detached from the expansion
tank when filling coolant. Fill coolant as described under item 4
and drain the coolant into a container until an even flow of
coolant (without air) comes out of the bleed hoses. Refit the bleed
pipes and fill coolant to the maximum level of the expansion
tank.
3. Open the expansion tank cap. Set the heater controls to full
heating.4. Fill with coolant to the maximum level of the expansion
tank. Scania CV AB 2012, Sweden

The bleed nipple on the retarder cooler5. The following applies
to vehicles with retarder:a) Connect a nipple with hose to the
bleed nipple on the retarder cooler. See il-
lustration.b) Continue filling coolant with a coolant tank and
collect the coolant-air mixture
from the retarder cooler in a container.c) Fill until coolant
flows out evenly. Remove the nipple with hose from the re-
tarder cooler.d) Fill with coolant to the maximum level of the
expansion tank.
6. Disconnect the coolant tank. Start the engine and set the
heater controls to full heating. Leave the engine idling for 15
minutes.
IMPORTANT!Idling speed must not exceed 600 rpm. Engine overspeed
could damage the coolant pump shaft seal, which leads to coolant
leakage.
7. Switch off the engine. Fill with coolant to the maximum level
through the filler opening in the expansion tank. Close the
cap.
It is possible that a small amount of air remains as air pockets
in the cooling system. Therefore, always top fill the expansion
tank after the engine has been warm and the thermostat has opened.
It is necessary to run the engine for some time before all air has
been evacuated from the cooling system, which may involve topping
up coolant at a later stage.
WARNING!On vehicles with an auxiliary water heater, the cooling
system must be bled as de-scribed above before the water heater may
be started. Otherwise, the water heater could overheat, which would
lead to impaired function and risk of fire. Scania CV AB 2012,

Further information on external circuits is contained in the
document Coolant outlet under Chassis modifications.IMPORTANT!If an
external circuit is connected to the cooling system, it must be
equipped with a bleeding point at its highest point and must be
open during filling. Fill coolant as de-scribed under item 4 and
drain the coolant into a container until an even flow of cool-ant
(without air) comes out of the bleed hoses of the external circuit
and expansion tank. Close the bleeding point and fill coolant to
the maximum level of the expansion tank. Scania CV AB 2012,

The cooling system pressure valve is located on the expansion
tank.Pressure testing the cooling systemWhen pressure testing the
cooling system, the pressure valve must not be triggered before the
pressure has reached 0.70.9 bar (overpressure). Once the pressure
valve has opened, the remaining pressure in the system must not be
lower than 0.5 bar (overpressure). If the expansion tank pressure
cap does not fulfil these conditions, it must be renewed.
