specifically to Purlins, Sheeting
Rails and Eaves Beams.
BW Industries Purlin Divisioncarries out design and
manufacture of light steel pre-galvanised steel purlins andsheeting rails.
BW standard sections rangefrom 121mm to 341mm withthicknesses from 1.2mm to 3mmand the systems are availablein Zed or Cee section proleswhich are manufactured frompre-galvanised steel coil with aguaranteed yield strength of 450N/mm2.
In addition we also offer bespokesections ranging from 50mm to
500mm with thicknesses from
0.5mm to 6mm, manufactured to
individual clients requirements.

Design Software
BW Industries have developed
software for the design of purlins,
eaves beams, sheeting rails and
mezzanine oor beams. This isprovided as an aid to designers and
speciers to allow selection of the
optimum section.
It has been developed following
extensive testing of sections
under the SCI (Steel Construction
Institute), which was undertaken
to accurately determine bending
capacities.
The software has been developed
by a chartered structural engineer
and has been independentlychecked and veried by the SCI.
Fully comprehensive technical
support is available from our design
team.
Detailing
BW Industries produce standard
detailing sheets which allow
detailers to order standard
sections and components. The information on these sheets
is used to generate a CAM data
le which is then fed directly
into the manufacturing system.
Standard details are available
on a number of electronic
draughting packages such as
Autocad and Tekla.
BW Industries also have facilities
to produce detail drawings as
required for any project.
Non standard sections and
non standard hole sizes
and or punchings can be
accommodated on request.
Ordering and Manufacture
In order to facilitate the ordering
process, BW Industries have
a range of standard drawings
and detail sheets which can becompleted by the client. These
are then used to prepare an
acknowledgment, which itemises
precisely what is required. The
information on drawings and detail
sheets is programmed into a cam
data le which is transmitted
directly to the rolling of fabrication
plant.
Ancillary items are produced in
conjunction with the manufacture of
major components.
All major components are normally
ink jet printed to show what they
are and from which materials they
have been formed. This process
is so that there is a trail which
shows exactly what has been
manufactured.

Fire Restraint Wall SystemDesign and Certification contd
Design
All of BW Industries steel section
property information and load
tables have been independently
assessed and veried under
the SCI Assessed Scheme
Calculation of the member
resistances. The section
properties are calculated in
accordance with BS-EN 1993-1-3(Design of steel structures,, Part
1-3 General rules Supplementary
rules for cold-formed members and
sheeting BSI 2006).
CE Marking
BW Industries Limited
Factory Production Control was
third party assessed against
EN 1090-1:2009+A1 2011, by SGS
UK. We achieved accreditation to
EXC2 and standard ISO 14731 and
ISO 3834.
This certication covers the
following products: Steel
Structural Purlins, Mezzanine Steel
Channels, Fabricated Structural
Steel Assemblies and SureBUILD
Engineered Wall Panels.
Dispatch and Supply
BW Industries have a team of
experienced personnel who hand
pick the items for dispatch andload these onto the vehicles that
have been arranged for onward
transportation.
Depending on the end users
requirements, specialist vehicles
with on board lifting equipment can
be arranged to facilitate off-loading
at the delivery address.
Certification
BW Industries have developed design softwarebased on the methodology in the relevant Europeanstandards and extensive testing of their product range.
This information has been independently assessedand approved by the SCI who are an internationally
recognized authority in the eld of light gaugesteelwork design and construction.
BW Industries are pleased to display the SCI logoand to conrm that their products have achievedSCI Assessed status with theappropriate certication.

Single Span
The sleeved purlin system is suitable for buildings with two
or more bays and utilises single span length purlins withsleeves. The sleeves are formed from the same section asthe purlins but are installed inverted.
The sleeves, which achieve a high degree of continuity over the
purlin supports are tted at all penultimate rafter connections andstaggered on all internal bays, allow economy of purlin sectionselection.
The system can be used for single span purlins and for doublespan purlins.

Purlins Lap System
The lap system is a further variation of the sleeved system whichis suitable for buildings with ve or more bays. Extended singlespan purlins are alternatively inverted and overlapped with eachother.
The lapped section has the benet of achieving a high degree ofcontinuity over the purlin supports thus allowing economic sectionselection.
The avoidance of sleeves means that there are fewer system
components leading to reduced site erection time.

Fire Restraint Wall SystemRoof Variations
Monopitch Roof
Tiled/Mansard Roof
For monopitch and other roofs where there is no restraint to theridge purlin via apex ties an equivalent anchor must be used(ie threaded bar). This may take the form of a simple tie to asubstantial ridge beam or alternatively by a combination of strutsand diagonal bracing between the top two purlins.
Restraints should be used at mid-span for purlin spans greater than3.5m and at third points of span for purlin spans greater than 7.5m.
For long roof slopes additional diagonal bracing may be requireddepending on sheeting.
These types of roof covering may cause bending about bothaxes of the roof purlins due to their weight. In order to provideadequate restraint roof ties should be used in lieu of anti sag ties. The ridge purlins should be tied using a rigid apex strut. Diagonalbracing wires are required between the top two purlins. Additionaldiagonal bracing will be required for every 6m lengthof roof slope.
The struts should be arranged such that the maximumunrestrained purlin length is restricted to 2m.
The timber rafters should be joined across the apex or be xedto a ridge board.

Fire Restraint Wall SystemRoof Variations contd
Non-restraining Cladding to Roof
Steep Roof
Many modern cladding systems do not provideadequate lateral restraint to the top ange of thepurlins. In this situation it is necessary to replace thestandard anti-sag ties with angle strut braces.
The struts should be arranged such that the maximumunrestrained purlin length is restricted to 2m.
For roof pitches greater than 25 diagonal bracingshould always be provided.
These diagonal wires used in conjunction with anglestrut sag bars allow for bending about both axes ofthe purlin.
Rigid apex ties are also required.

purlin to apex dimension and roof pitch
Apex Ties are used to offer rigid restraint on pitched roofs. Usedin conjunction with anti-sag ties to give perpendicular support tothe purlins.
Apex Ties connect the two uppermost purlins across the ridgeand are usually 12mm screwed rod.

Side Rails Sleeved System
The sleeved side rail system is suitable for buildings with two ormore bays and utilizes single span length side rails with sleeves. The sleeves are formed from plain channel section ie without lips.
The sleeves, which achieve a high degree of continuity over theside rail supports are tted at all penultimate column connectionsand staggered on internal bays, allow economy of side rail
section selection.
The system can be used for single span side rails and for doublespan side rails.

Fire Restraint Wall SystemFire Restraint Wall System
In certain applications it is necessary to include re protection to some or all of the perimeter walls around the building. There are many reresistant wall cladding systems which are available today.
General Notes
The rail or cleat is slotted longitudinally (14mm x 50mm) on thestandard gauge lines. 60mm gap required between ends of rails.
Fixing bolts to all joints must be tted with a combustible washer. This will collapse under re conditions, to allow movement for the
rail to expand.
The period of resistance is solely dependent on the claddingmaterial used, and the type of construction. A certicate should beobtained from the cladding supplier.
All primary structural steelwork, supporting the rails and cladding, should be re protected.
