BVDC Novice Driver Clinic with Lore Homer At Chapter One Farms, Pedricktown, NJ
Saturday, March 22nd
The novice driver clinic with professional instructor Lore
Homer was a great success according to all the clinic
participants! We ended up with 4 drivers and 4
auditors. This number of drivers was small enough to
allow flexibility with the schedule and individual,
customized instruction for each participant in a relaxed
atmosphere. The clinic started at 9:00 AM with
everyone gathered around having breakfast and
listening to Lore talk about various turnout topics
which generated lots of good questions from the
group. Lore shared her turnout advice based on many
successful years in the show ring.
After the turnout talk, Lore reviewed proper harness fit
and harnessing technique from start to finish,
demonstrating visually with some of the participants’ horses. At this point, the driving instruction
began. We had one participant who was still in the ground driving phase with her mini, but the other
three ponies/mini’s were harnessed and hitched, with all four ponies working in the ring together. All
four were exceptionally well mannered as a group so Lore was able to give a group lesson in some of
the movements typically required at Pleasure shows such as figure 8’s and serpentines as well as the
rein-back. Lunch was available for everyone whenever they had unhitched and taken care of their
ponies.
Feedback heard from the participants was that they felt
this had been time and money well-spent because they
had learned something new that was a valuable take-
away.
We thank Helene Paxton for being a wonderful host
as always - assisting Lore with the logistics, keeping the
clinic flowing smoothly. We are fortunate to have
access to Helene’s facility and especially the indoor
arena which is so well suited to driving activities in rain
or shine!
We would like to especially thank long-time club
member Lore Homer for graciously donating her time
for this clinic, sharing her successful show experience
and expert knowledge with all of us.

Gail Aumiller - Treasurer 2014—2015
I never aspired to be a carriage driver. Probably because the only experience I had with carriages was the “buggies” pulled by sorry looking horses driven by the Amish in my hometown of Milroy, PA. As a child I often pretended to be a horse, tossing my head and shaking my mane-like hair as I cantered around the neighborhood, so I have always had an affinity towards horses. My first horse, Apache Lady, a small palomino mare, was my best friend growing up. We did everything together, lots of it, and mostly bareback. I can remember my blacksmith saying something about my riding too much, causing the front shoes to wear thin and break in half while still being worn and I should have a second horse! Soon after starting my teaching career, I bought an off the track TB, after he had thrown me when I went to try him out. I had a great time turning Bally Babu into a hunter-jumper: that was my thing and Thoroughbreds were my breed. Approaching 50, I started to research breeds to find something as exhilarating to ride as a TB, but not as explosive in hairy situations, and that is how I discovered the Friesian. In 2003 I bought my first Friesian, Heidie, a yearling filly, and eventually started her under saddle. Because she was such a beauty I felt obligated to share her with the public, so entered a few local shows (33 years after my last horse show!) before breeding her. As I moved into the Friesian world with my breeding (1 foal/yr) and training program (my own horses) I realized the advantage of hitching my youngsters before starting them under saddle, so I send all my coming 3 YOs to Sweigart’s Stable in Denver, PA, to be hitched. When
they return to Dreams Come True Farm, I drive them to stay fit (I’m no longer able to ride long enough to keep a horse fit), preparing them for their 3 YO keuring in the fall. Even after this discovery, I still had no aspirations to be a carriage driver until I started going to Friesian breed shows as a spectator. I knew the Friesian horse was beautiful in tack, but when hitched to a formal carriage and driven by a lady dressed to the nines and wearing a fabulous hat, the picture is exquisite, so my dream began. I knew of both BVDC and MLMDC from Internet searches and joined MLMDC, participating in their harness cleaning clinics and Beginner I and II Driving clinics. I let that membership lapse because I was getting too busy to participate in their activities. In 2009 4YO Sjaantje was in training, which ended with her going to the Friesian World Championships and Grand Nationals in St Louis, MO, and coming home with 2 national titles in driving, but not with me as whip. In 2010, Thomas Heverin, my very significant other, and I traveled to a few shows for their Friesian driving classes and were disappointed that even when the prize list said “carriage pleasure driving,” the classes were judged as “show driving.” That was also the year I realized Sjaantje knew more about driving than I, so in 2011 Sjaantje and I became Suzy Stafford students. Six weeks into our training and 5 days before the 2011 BVDC Pleasure Show, Suzy asked me if I wanted to go with her, so after dozens of questions, I decided it would be a good experience and agreed. The next 3 years we trained with Suzy, so I’ve participated in all of the BVDC cones clinics she hosted. That participation prepared me to win the 2013 Friesian National Championship Amateur title in cones, as well as to place 2nd in those classes at my last ADS show--just a few seconds behind first! I’m still dreaming of getting that blue. To learn more about ADS events, I started volunteering. I’ve helped with the 2012 Aiken, SC, Salute to Driving, the first Glen Willow CDE, and Teddy Bears Picnic, under the auspices of Bobbi Hager the past 2 years. When I realized that I had the time to be an active member, I joined BVDC in 2013. Since Sjaantje will be on maternity leave for the next 2 years, I look forward to getting even more involved with our activities, but sometimes living in Carlisle, PA, presents
I have been a member of BVDC for about 25 years and have had some rewarding and fun times participating in many events sponsored by BVDC. Although I did not grow up with horses I made the most of every opportunity I had to spend time with horses rented from riding stables and with family friends who had a small farm with horses. I was introduced to driving through my sister in law Doris Grassi Moore and Lisa Singer. A memorable first driving lesson with Lisa was with the quarter horse I had sent to her for training. We set off on a trail by the Brandywine River that bordered Frolic Weymouth’s property when we were suddenly attacked by 3 of his lurcher dogs. Lisa stood up in the carriage, snatched the whip from my hand and proceeded to beat off the dogs. The dog’s yelping and the whip snapping in
the air only made my horse go faster and faster! Welcome to the sport of carriage driving! Subsequent lessons involved driving on Route 100 in Chadd’s Ford to the WAWA and waiting in a parking spot while Lisa went to get a cup of coffee and then returning to her farm to navigate the hazards she set up in her woods. I later bought one of Lisa’s ponies, Paprika, and enjoyed many years of low key riding and driving with her. I bought a new horse in December that both rides and drives and I am looking forward to participating in additional club events both as a volunteer and as a competitor. If you are not participating in an event I encourage you to get involved as a volunteer as I guarantee you will meet knowledgeable members who will encourage you and support you in your own driving adventures.

A Glen Willow summer series! Mark your calendars and load up your horses and ponies,
don’t miss this incredible opportunity to experience the Glen Willow facility. A set of
driving schooling shows and clinics will be held at the show grounds throughout the
summer. This is a wonderful chance for you to utilize the grounds. We all need more
opportunities to expose our equine friends and ourselves to a show-like atmosphere. So
take up the contact and trot on over to Glen Willow.
The first event is scheduled for April 27 as a combined test with Mickie Bowen as judge. Entries open March 9 and close on April 16. Entry form is on the next page.
In addition to the cones and dressage of the combined test there is an option for you to
drive another dressage test. All tests will be driven in an 80 meter ring. Also there will
be a second cones course set up to be driven after all competitors are finished with
combined test, this is so cones volunteers can be flipped from one course to the other. If
there is not enough entries for second cones course it will be eliminated from the
schedule, but what an opportunity to drive two compete courses in one day. Both
courses will be open to walk before start of show. Limited off site stabling options
available.
Plans are in the works for another combined test in June and a hazard clinic in July

The Kennett Square Memorial Day Parade Organziers are seeking horses and carriage
(pairs are preferred, but a well-turned out single would be considered) to participate in the Kennett Square Memorial Day Parade to be held on Monday, May 26, 2014. The Parade Organizers are pleased to offer a donation of $250.00 for your participation. Your presence will enhance the parade's theme of a "Patriotic Hometown Parade" and will be appreciated by our entire community. In honor of our local veterans, the Parade Organizers are inviting many to join in the parade with some riding in antique military vehicles and convertibles, as well as additional entries with a military theme, including revolutionary and civil war re-enactors, bag pipes, fife and drums, and bands, etc. A luncheon will be provided for the veterans and parade participants after the parade at the American Legion Hall located at Broad & State Sts.
I have specified to the parade organizers that the horses be positioned away from “paraders making loud noises especially from behind, such as bands, bagpipes, drums, sirens, loudspeakers, motorcycles or ATVs who might race/gun their engines for effect etc, and we should also not be behind any baton twirlers, marchers with streamers, rustling paper/cloth banners and large bright items that may be flapping in the wind.” I have also provided them with parade safety guidelines promulgated by the Kentucky Horse Council. WHEN: Monday, May 26, 2014 @ 10 a.m. TIME: 9:00-9:15 a.m. for Line Up WHERE: Line Up at Kennett High School located at 100 E. South Street, Kennett Square, PA (corner of S. Union St. & South St. - entrance on S. Union). The parade will end at UNION HILL Cemetery located on North Union St. near Rt.1 bypass. PARADE ROUTE: Starting at Kennett High School and Genesis (S. Union & South Sts.) to S. Union -- to Cypress - to S. Broad – to E State St – to N Union St – to Union Hill Cemetery. DIRECTIONS: Take Rt. 1, exit Kennett Square, take Union St. going South (Rt. 82) through town. The high school is on the left and at the intersection of S. Union St. & South St.
Please contact Judy Kinney Paisley @ [email protected] or 610-368-3822 if you would like to participate. The parade organizers require that your horses be experienced with parades and amenable to parade conditions that might spook inexperienced horses. Further, the organizers are requesting vehicles that are well presented and turned out (aka show worthy) and have asked for review of a description, or better yet, photograph of your turnout.
The CAA will once again host a pleasure driving show, educational seminars, drives at will and social activites for your enjoyment, at the end of June 2014, in the Alltech (indoor) Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
