04DIVING ONTO THE SILVER SCREEN

Alright. I think I’ve read every review, analysis and think-piece published this week on the “How I Met Your Mother” finale. While I un-derstand complaints about the suddenness

or supposed incompletion of the surprise end-ing, I disagree. This puts me in a (very, very) small minority of fans, but I liked and appreci-ated Monday’s series finale.

HIMYM has always been a story about grow-ing up, and part of growing up is accepting things won’t always go your way; instead, we learn to compromise. Although the show was a comedy, and many viewers tuned in just for the laughs, the show was defined by its emotional moments. Scenes like Ted waiting on the roof all night for the Slutty Pumpkin or the passing of Marshall’s dad were certainly sad, but taken as a part of the larger story being told, conveyed a subtly positive tone. Ted’s enduring optimism kept abysmal darkness at bay, even at Ted’s most soul-crushing defeats. Melancholic mo-ments were balanced with hopeful overtones to foster a nostalgia for the present. Yes, it was sad and miserable, but it was also enjoyable for its sadness and longing, like listening to The National or Anakin’s “let me look on you with my own eyes” at the end of Return. This happy sadness was a signature of HIMYM’s best episodes and certainly a present factor in the finale.

Of course, I had major qualms with the fi-nale, too. Barney’s return to his old, womanizing ways was hardly believable, and the sudden maturity thrust upon him at the sight of his baby daughter was criminally underdeveloped (Plus, what was the use in building Barney’s characterization across seasons seven, eight and nine into “husband material,” if it’s negated so quickly by his divorce from Robin?). Also, of all the female names, why “Tracy”? I was really pulling for “Leia” or even “Padme.”

I really do believe the finale felt appropriate, though. As Kevin Craft pointed out in The At-lantic, HIMYM was “a feel-good story about the importance of friendship and love.” In a television comedy landscape dominated by snarky, sarcasm-laced shows like “Parks and Recreation” or “Louie” (both of which I care for deeply), HIMYM had an earnest charm and warmth, largely absent from primetime since “Friends” went off the air. The finale channeled this spirit just as well as the series did in its third or fourth season peak.

» Lion Bars: While Britain is re-nowned worldwide for its amazing TV shows (Doctor Who, Sherlock, Blackadder anyone?), obsession with tea, and the conquest and pillaging of my home country for

hundreds of years (shhh, we don't talk about that one anymore), my favorite facet of British culture has to be the Lion Bar. This sugary delight is a bit like a Kit-Kat wrapped in caramel, then wrapped in a layer of glorious nutty chocolate. I had only had them on my visits to family living across the pond, so you can imagine my ecstasy on beholding that Meijer sells them for around a dollar a pop. Every bite I take into one of those gooey delicacies makes me forgive the British Raj just a little bit more.

EGGCELLENT

Haveyou guys ever bedazzled your vaginas?

Think it's only acceptable for kids to go on egg hunts every Easter? Think again! April 18 marks the 21st Annual Nite Lite Egg Pursuit, hosted by the Champaign Park District. This egg hunt was de-signed for those who are ages 18 and older and has continued to be a popular program in the Champaign community.

This year, the hunt will take place at Hessel Park in Champaign and will begin at 7:15 p.m. and run until 8:30 p.m. To make the hunt a little more challenging for its older group of participants, the park district shuts down all the lights in the park during the event, making the area completely dark. Hunters can bring fl ashlights, phones, headlights or any other devices that would help them fi nd the hidden eggs.

While some of the eggs that the park district plac-es have candy in them, just as a classic Easter egg would, others have prizes that are more suitable for this age group. When you open an egg with a prize, there will be a slip which you will later exchange for the actual item. Some prizes that have been given away in the past include gift cards to movie theaters and jewelry stores, tickets to shows at Krannert Cen-ter for the Performing Arts and Assembly Hall and DVD packages.

So, whether you are feeling nostalgic or just want to try and win some free prizes, head over to Hessel Park on April 18 for a fun night. Nite Lite Egg Pursuit is sponsored by Sam’s Club and local radio station Lite Rock 97.5.

» Wrestlemania XXX: Daniel Bryan’s skyrocket to the top of the WWE roster over the past year has been one of the most memorable storylines in the pro-motion’s recent history. Blurring

the line between the program’s fi ctional plot and the reality of behind the scenes politics, Bryan’s story arc has captured the attention of the main-stream media and given WWE’s fan base the unlikeliest of protagonists in professional wres-tling’s history: a bearded vegan, standing at just 5-foot-8. Bryan’s captivating rebel against “The Authority” culminates this Sunday in the main event of Wrestlemania when he takes on WWE fi gurehead and former champion Triple HHH with the opportunity to enter the headlining WWE World Heavywieght Championship match. If Bryan leaves Wrestlemania XXX as champion, it would be one of the biggest underdog stories in professional wrestling history and perhaps the most emotional closing scenes in Wrestlemania’s storied 30-year run.

Divergent marks the latest young adult book adaptation for the silver screen, fol-

lowing in the footsteps of Twilight, The Hunger Games and The Mortal Instruments. Fortu-nately, Divergent is more Hunger Games than Mortal Instruments. There’s enough story and action to appeal to more than just those who have read the novel, and the cliffhanger end-ing will leave viewers yearning for the sequel, which is due next spring.

Divergent is set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago after an event known solely as “the war,” in which the survivors are divided into five fac-tions including Abnegation, Erudite and Daunt-less. When children turn 16, they undergo a simulation that tells them to which faction they belong based on their personality type but, when Tris from Abnegation takes the test, her results are inconclusive. She is considered “Divergent” and a threat to society, but she is not told why. Not knowing what faction to join at the Choosing Ceremony, Tris decides to transfer to Dauntless, a faction that empha-sizes bravery, trains warriors and defends the city. The movie then follows her through her ruthless training in Dauntless and unravels the mystery of why Divergents threaten the uto-pian civilization.

Viewers will immediately notice similarities between this film and The Hunger Games. Nonetheless, I think Divergent has enough originality and redeeming qualities to stand on its own. Yes, similarly to The Hunger Games, it’s set in the future against the backdrop of a cor-rupt society and the factions are reminiscent of the districts from The Hunger Games, but Divergent delves into themes of human nature in a unique way and Tris is hardly like The Hun-ger Games’s main character, Katniss Everdeen. I don’t want this review to become a comparison of the two films, but it’s worth noting that, in contrast to Katniss, Tris is less superhuman and more relatable in some ways, lacking a special skill like archery and losing many fights and

evaluations before finding any sort of success or answers. Shailene Woodley is on track for a Jennifer Lawson-esque rise to stardom with her layered performance. She’s not afraid to display weakness and tenderness but also brings fire and intensity when her role demands it. In the final act, she proves her dramatic mettle when a few key characters face their demise, and Tris must juggle an assortment of unsettling, contradictory emotions.

A few notable adult actors also make appear-ances in the movie, including Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn and Maggie Q. Heavyweight Kate Winslet plays a power-hungry baddie. It’s a delight to see the Oscar-winning actress tackle a role out of her wheelhouse, as she plasters an icy grin on her face and rears her claws. Read-ers of the book will be pleased with the movie’s faithfulness to the source material, although for a movie about embracing one’s individuality, I wonder if director Neil Burger and screenplay writers Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor could have taken more risks and stepped out of the box. The film’s directing is quite standard and certain characters lack development, e.g. Four. The scenes in which Tris journeys through her “fear landscape” don’t evoke the fear or ten-sion they should, and some of the action and violence could have been beefed up to pack a greater emotional punch.

While Divergent isn’t groundbreaking, it’s an entertaining film and averts the poor series kick-off that so many young adult book adap-tations have faced recently. Summit Entertain-ment has already green-lighted the book's two sequels, so the makers have a chance to im-prove. They’ve definitely got a great cast with strong leading females in Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, an engaging story with many more questions to be answered and enough action and adventure to please all audiences. With that said, the results are conclusive: Di-vergent is worth the price of admission.

PANDAMONIUM’S POP-UP PERFECTIONJames Kyung’s delectable donuts thrill CU, selling out within an hourBY JONNA NEWBERRY

James Kyung, the owner of Pandamonium Doughnuts, paired up with [co][lab] in

downtown Urbana to serve his gourmet dough-nuts for three consecutive weekends. The idea for Pandamonium Doughnuts came out of vis-iting gourmet doughnut shops in Chicago, and Kyung thought it was time that he brought this craze down to the CU area. He says that all his doughnuts “are made with high-quality ingre-dients and with all the doughnuts hand-rolled/hand cut and glazes made from scratch, and that they are trans-fat free and fried in trans-fat free oil.” Kyung even ventures out to vegan and gluten-free flavors, but the pop-up will only have vegan flavors. Don’t fear because Kyung is always coming up with new flavors and has a bunch of new ways to bring his creative dough-nuts to CU.

I was really excited for Pandamonium Dough-nuts’s first Pop-up event at [co][lab]. I went Friday around 5:15 p.m., and there was already a line that swung around the inside. I waited in line for 30 minutes and when I got close to the front, I saw that each doughnut flavor was constantly being emptied out of the serving trays. I have never seen doughnuts go that fast. When I got the front, they were still very busy. Before I even left the shop, I heard some of the flavors were close to being sold out and a couple were actually gone. When I got back to my car, I saw someone in line before me enjoying the doughnuts in her car. The happy customer gave me a thumbs up.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the pop-up sold out within an hour each day. On Saturday, there was already a line before 8 a.m. and then on Sunday the line went around the corner and down to Courier Cafe. I think it’s safe to say that Pandamonium Doughnuts had a very successful opening weekend. Kyung is “overwhelmed and thankful for the support and love of this commu-nity for local businesses” and he “could not have asked for a better kick-off to the pop-up doughnut shop weekends at [co][lab]." He is "so excited for the next two weekends and continue feeding the people of CU some handcrafted, specialty dough-nuts, made with lots of love.” He also has more pop-up flavors in store. The doughnuts were so popular that in the Facebook event, one customer made a super doughnut out of all the flavors from Sunday’s selection of doughnuts, and a couple of other customers posted adorable pictures of their kids with the doughnuts. People of all ages showed up to the event, and I’m pretty sure that the final verdict is that gourmet doughnuts are serious busi-ness in CU.

Since all these tasty doughnuts have creative roots, here are some flavor profiles, so you know what you are getting into.

S’mores: This campfire inspired dessert basically looks like a little cupcake doughnut because of the marshmallow on top. They come with a chocolate frosting and crushed graham crackers on them.

Blueberry Lemon: These purple-ish pink pastries were inspired by a muffin. I can see how it is really popular because their bright color and little bit of tart taste will put a smile of your face.

Chocolate OD: The OD stands for overdose and that is exactly what you getting enough with these doughnuts. They have a chocolate base and a dark chocolate ganache and a chocolate butter cream and sprinkled chocolate chips. Any chocolate lover would be in heaven.

Vegan Chai Cake: Vegan doughnuts are always hard to find and homemade vegan are even harder to find, but Pandamonium attempts to cater to any crowd. These cake doughnuts get a bit of spice from the chai in the cake batter and chai icing. This earthy flavor warms you to core and goes perfect with coffee.

Maple Bacon Apple Fritters: These are the “most popular doughnuts and always the first ones to sell out” according to Kyung. The best part is that they come with actual bacon bits on top and “it’s made with pure Vermont maple syrup and pure maple extract and house made apple mix that is mixed into the dough” Kyung said. They taste as good as they sound.

Salted Caramel: Most of the time when you think of salted caramel, you think of salted caramel hot chocolate or salted caramel ice cream, but this doughnut is definitely one to add to the list. When you bite into it, you get the taste of “the house made caramel sauce” and know why this is a favorite.

Cereal Killer: This was featured as a pop-up flavor. Many places have their variations on this with Fruit Loops or Cap’n Crunch, but Pandamonium’s choice of cereal is Fruity Pebbles. They use a cereal milk glaze. It still reminds you of breakfast, but just on a doughnut. Be on the lookout for different cereal toppings in the future.

If these flavors interest you and you are craving more, there are more flavors at the actual pop-up such as Vanilla Been, BDay Cake, Vegan Banana Cake and more. If you didn’t make it the first week-end, there are still two more weekends to get a hold of these doughnuts. Don’t forget to grab coffee from The Flying Machine while you are there because they pair wonderfully with the doughnuts.

If you happen to miss the pop-up, then don’t worry because Pandamonium Doughnuts also has future plans to team up with Cream and Flut-ter in April, and in May, the Urbana Farmer’s Mar-ket will be open again and will feature these deli-cious delights. Also, be on the lookout for when Pandamonium's food truck debuts later this year.

WHISPERS WHISPERS ARE NO FUN, UNLESS YOU SHARE WITH EVERYONE

BY EMILY DOROLEK

Unlike Facebook and Twitter — which some deem as overused and ego boosts — the app

Whisper strives to give people the option to share their thoughts, actions and most of all, secrets to a flourishing and updated news feed. What gives this app the spin that these other social media sites lack is the absence of identity.

Launched in the spring of 2012, millions of us-ers have already downloaded the app created by Michael Heyward. The app has recently been promoted throughout the student body of the University, gaining even more attention and us-age. One spokesperson from Whisper, Aryanna Harrell, spoke about the app and what is in store for it in the future.

buzz: What is Whisper? Aryanna Harrell: Whisper, a free iOS and An-droid application, is quickly taking over college campuses, allowing users to share their most authentic thoughts and connect with each other anonymously. Last month, Whisper saw over 3.5 billion page views, with users opening the app eight to 10 times per day and spending an average of 30 minutes on the app.buzz: Why was Whisper created? A.H.: The creator of Whisper, Michael Heyward, realized that his millennial peers were tired of the ego-based networks like Facebook and Twitter. He wondered what would happen if personal iden-tity were removed from the equation and people were allowed to engage in an anonymous visual community on mobile devices. By eliminating the digital profile, Whisper provides you with a place to express your true self within a community of honesty and acceptance. And although there are no profiles, users still receive feedback on their posts in the form of hearts, replies and anony-mous private messages.buzz: Why would someone want Whisper?A.H.: Anyone who is not perfect has a need for Whisper.buzz: What kinds of secrets have been posted on Whisper? A.H.: College students are using the app to share secrets about Greek life, relationships, hooking up, college life and so much more. Another unique feature of the app is localization. Users can go to the “Nearby” tab in the app and see Whispers cre-ated on their college campuses (you never know if users might even be sitting right next to you). Many form positive, meaningful connections with users and take their relationships offline. buzz: What kinds of people are using the app? A.H.: We have a highly engaged millennial

audience. Our core demographic is females between the ages of 18-24, and the app is 70 percent female, 30 percent male. The app is for ages 17 and over.buzz: Where do you see Whisper going in the future?A.H.: Whisper is only at the forefront of an emerging anonymity movement that will only continue to grow.

University junior Kathleen Sullivan is a campus ambassador and representative for Whisper. She helps to increase awareness of the new applica-tion, as well as encourage more people, especially targeting students, to download it. After being introduced to the company by close friend Nicole Fox, she uses her Advertising major and Commu-nications minor to help in advertising the app. She shared her experiences with the app and working with the emerging Whisper.

buzz: Do you use Whisper?Kathleen Sullivan: Yes I do! I check the app mul-tiple times a day, and I love switching it to the “Nearby” tab so I can see other Whispers that U of I kids are making. Some are about Unofficial, spring break and bars on campus.buzz: How has the app been promoted?K.S.: We have been in constant communication with people via Facebook and Twitter, as well as having held giveaways.buzz: What other features of Whisper are included?K.S.: There is a location feature, a search func-tionality, a popular feed, a latest feed and a direct private messaging feature.

Whisper CEO Michael Heyward left buzz with some final thoughts:

“People are just plain bored of the same people posting over and over about how awesome their lives are. People are hungry from something deep-er and more real. Anonymity is what unlocks this. You don’t have to filter the same way and you still get the real time feedback from the community. Another trend that is driving (the) shift to ano-nymity is that the millennial generation has to think about the future potential consequences of everything they post. Will future employers see it and judge them? Everything on Facebook and LinkedIn is attached to your person(al) file. These are high stakes. The removal of personal identity from a social media platform provides a different kind of space, reducing risk and resulting in a higher level of authenticity.”

The app is free and on its way to making a big name. What deep secrets are you hiding?

COMMUNITYCOMMUNITY

HOW LARRY SEES ITLocal photographer exhibits CU as the picture-perfect community it really is

Larry Kanfer is a local photographer whose award-winning work is nationally collected.

He has been a member of CU after graduating from the University in 1979. If anyone has any doubts about CU, take it from a pro: it’s truly an amazing place with amazing people.

»buzz: Could you tell me a little bit about your work in the community?»Larry Kanfer: I think that a lot of my work within the community is not photography based. A lot

of times, I will have an occasional workshop. For example, I did one with the Camera Club. They put on an exhibit in Lincoln Square, and that was just really teaching the basics of photography. I judge that exhibit every year. One of the things that I love doing is judging photography because a lot of the times, the judges don’t necessarily say why they pick something, and I think the whole idea is to say, “I like this because...” It doesn’t do anyone any good to just say that “this is good,” and that is sort of a neat thing that I do – telling people why I think that

something is good, so that they can improve on it. »buzz: It sounds like you do a lot of things for the community outside of photography. Could you tell me a little about that?»LK: I started in 1979, and the community has been very supportive. I mean, I got my start here, and people were just so enthusiastic. At one point, I opened a gallery in Minneapolis, and that was weird. We had these two galleries, but this was always my main gallery. I lived up there while that was getting started, and I realized that I missed Champaign-Urbana. It has been so rich for me liv-ing here, in terms of people supporting my work. So basically, I just moved back. Since then, I have changed a little bit of my direction with the com-munity since my business has been going well.

I am on the school board for my kids’ school, so that is one level. How do I thank people for all these years that they have supported me? I truly do, from the bottom of my heart, thank people for supporting me. So, how do I do that? One of the things is look-ing at people (who) do well for all of us, who don’t necessarily get thanked.

A couple of years ago, my father passed away; he was a World War II veteran. So I thought, I am going to go to Normandy to see it for myself, and that grew into this idea that I could bring people in our com-munity who served and who were D-Day veterans and share that with high school kids. So together, we

put on a D-Day event. I found nine survivors living in the Champaign-Urbana area. They brought in their memorabilia, and we just really thanked everybody for their service. » buzz: Have you done any other work with veterans?»LK: From that event, there was a guy I know who lives here in town and helped me put something together. He said that, every Veteran’s Day, he takes a veteran out to lunch. I am in Champaign West Rotary and thought that, with this great group of people who do things for the community, why not try to institutionalize this? So, I built this thing called Veteran’s Day One-on-One, where members of the club invite a veteran to lunch. It is not just a donation because you take the time to call them up and invite them to lunch. You get to hear their stories, but the whole thing revolves around thanking them because a lot of the younger soldiers never really got thanked like the Vietnam veterans. Last year, which was the third year, all of the Champaign Rotary clubs, all of the Bloomington Rotary clubs and now all of the Chicago clubs are doing this event. Basically, I am trying to get this to be a nationwide thing. That is a very big part of my life at this point. It is all about thanking people. I think it is a good thing because it is all about thanking these people who might not have otherwise gotten recognized.

IT’S BEEN A WILD ONEPortland indie-pop outfit Wild Ones play Mike ‘N Molly’s in ChampaignBY SEAN NEUMANN

Wild Ones is finally catching a break. The in-die-pop band’s debut album, Keep It Safe,

took nearly two years to make and was delayed by some members of the band quitting and some in the hospital, but now the Portland natives find them-selves touring across the country with their debut album being re-released on Topshelf Records. We caught up with frontwoman Danielle Sullivan after the band’s “best meal on the entire tour” in Maine to talk about the re-release of Keep It Safe and the band’s current tour with Typhoon.

buzz: Have you guys been all the way up to Maine before?DS: No, I’ve actually never been to most of the East Coast in my whole life and we’ve never toured over here before. This is definitely our first time to Port-land, Maine, and we’re really excited.buzz: Do you expect a big crowd in places far from Portland?DS: Well, I hear that the show is almost sold out, so we’ve got a great show. We’re touring with a band called Typhoon from Portland, Oregon. They have been bringing out really awesome crowds on the East Coast, so we’ve been playing really fun shows. We played two shows in Boston on Saturday and Sunday that were both sold out at this really neat venue. It was fun. For our first time touring to Boston, it’s been the greatest treat. buzz: You guys have been touring for a long time with Wild Ones or other bands, is touring still a fun experience?DS: Yeah, definitely. Touring is my favorite part, I think. Especially on this tour, getting to see a million new places. Most of this tour is mostly untouched by us, because we’ve never gone further east than Texas, so touring is great. We just got a new van last month. We used to drive this death-trap of a van around that would break down in almost every state, so now we actually have a van that runs, so touring is even more fun.buzz: Have you ever had to miss any shows because of the old van?DS: We have had one extremely close call when we got stuck going to Seattle. It was freezing cold outside, and we had to be towed from the snowy path directly to our show in Seattle. We loaded directly from the tow truck to the stage, and we played ten minutes later.buzz: How expensive was that towing bill?DS: You know what, the best investment is AAA. It was pretty much free. AAA is the best tour companion (laughing).
