Thai language is a tonal language and is made up five different tones - middle tone, low tone, falling tone, high tone and rising tone. It is similar to the Chinese language – where one word can have a completely different meaning if you pronounce it in the wrong tone. However, if you say the words in the correct grammar order most Thai people will manage to understand you.

Structure of Sentences. 1. Thai sentences are very simple. They start with “subject” then followed by action + noun. Examples:1. I watched television. pom* duu tho – ra – that / kh2. I ordered a beer. pom* sang bia / kh3. She bought a house khao seu baan / kh

*Note that action or verb in Thai language do not change as they do in English e.g. “go went / gone” and “drink / drank / drunk” etc. Don’t worry, Thai people will manage to understand from the context.2. Whenever you would like to use an adjective with a noun like “big house”, it will become “house big” and “cold beer” will become “beer cold” and there isn’t “a, an, the” in Thai.

Examples:1. I made Thai food. pom* tham a-haan Thai / kh (I make food Thai)2. I ordered Chaang beer.pom* sang bia chaang / kh (I order beer chaang)3. I learn Thai language.pom* rian paa – saa Thai / kh (I learn language Thai)4. She bought a white car.khao seu rot* see – khaao / kh (She buy car red)3. Negative sentences are very easy just put “mai” meaning “no” before an adjective or action.Examples:1. I don’t understand.pom* mai khao – jai / kh (I not understand)2. I don’t like yellow.pom* mai chawp see – leuang /kh (I not like color yellow)3. She does not come to work.khao mai maa tham – ngaan / kh (She not come work)

Don’t forget if you are female say “chan” instead of “pom*” which can be used for male only.
